His debt issues first started way back in the 2000s, when he was using credit cards to fly around the country to Street Fighter tournaments. The main way to recoup travel expenses in those days was money matches. But Phil is a scrub, and can't admit that he sucks. So he kept gambling on himself and kept getting further in the hole. Its possible the only reason he was tolerated in the FGC for so long was because he was such a whale.

What's more surprising to me is that he never ended up losing everything on a trip to Atlantic City.

I've been lurking the subforum for a while, but I never quite got that part of the spending lore. I know about WWE Champions and the alcohol, obviously, but I remember seeing mentions of some surreal purchases, like 300$ rubbish bins or 80$ hairbrushes. I don't remember the exact prices, but it was something beyond parody.

Why does he do that? Does he have no clue what the value of a dollar is? I was always curious about that. My guess is that it is a combination of his pathological laziness, feeling no sense of responsibility for the denthead money, and never needing to live within certain means. "Consumerism" does not quite explain to me, because that is something that makes most sense as an explanation for "exciting" products like Funko Pops or unnecessarily expensive cars. Instead, in his gin-brain, he feels the seeming compulsion to spend ten times more on completely mundane products like hairbrushes, compared to a much less expensive equivalent product, that accomplishes the same exact goal.

I know he had an expensive BMW, but he didn't seem that enthusiastic about it. Most people buy BMWs (which aren't the 4 Series) or similarly expensive cars because they are enthusiastic about cars and want something with a kick or sport looks. In his case, it was just a matter of him being low IQ and not understanding how maths of financing work, so he thought he was getting a good deal for it. Regardless, point being: that still does not explain why he bought these insanely expensive mundane products.

He is the ultimate mark. He buys all the extended warranties. He gets all the bells and whistles and if something costs more than another thing then it must be better. He even admits to getting fleeced like he did with his car repairs. The only reason he didn't pay to get Jasper tested is because they didn't shower him with hospitality during the visit.

An olderfag than me can probably give you a better answer, but my understanding is that, in Phil's mind, if something is more expensive, then it is inherently better.

Those meme-purchases you mentioned are mostly an older Phil thing, but that aspect of his consumerism is still present nowadays, perfect example being the $320 Qanba Joystick, which he bought because "It's like the Cadillac of joysticks." The most often mentioned meme-purchase is usually the $500 coffee maker, which he used to make pre-packaged Starbucks flavored coffee's and cup noodles.

It's probably a combination of having a stay-at-home mother who spent her days blowing her husband's money on QVC bullshit, as well as stumbling into a Youtube career where, for several years, he was legitimately making 250,000 - 300,000 dollars a year. And he's also a massive narcissist and egomaniac, so he believes that he is better than other people, and thusly, he deserves better things. Phil bought the BMW because it was an expensive status symbol, and he was making "Fuck you" money. It doesn't matter that John Rambo was driving an hour to and from Phil's condo in his piece of shit car just to make 100 dollars, Phil deserved the BMW.

Oh, yeah, that is true. I knew that aspect of him, but for some reason I didn't connect it to this ghoulish form of consumerism until you put it like that.

Phil does have an uncanny anti-talent of letting everyone who is out to take money from him by any means actually do it, although that does tie into a lot of things. For instance, in the case of the plumbers changing his waste disposal unit, he let his pockets get reamed because he is just too lazy to do it himself. Additionally, because he is the world's biggest pussy, he will never actually confront anyone about a difficult situation, even as simply as telling them "no". Car salesmen probably convince him easily because he believes that someone who is nice cannot have any ulterior motives.

I am actually somewhat convinced he does not care about such issues most of the time, because he can easily soothe his ego in front of the dents. It does seem like the recovers quickly from these incidents, even though he gets fleeced big time. Probably too retarded to comprehend how badly he gets fleeced, or because he virtually does not need to limit his spending. Maybe both.

In the case of WWE Champions, though, it is probably the same reason why he gets these 500$ coffee makers and so on. WWE Champions allows him to be in a special boys club, even if it means parting with a lot of money. While all money he spends is for Hulk Hogan pulls and gin, ultimately it is just for filling the limitless void that is his entire life. Still, it's really bizarre to observe, because even the most depressed of millionaires or billionaires have some kind of ambitious and obvious spending of their money, regardless of how vacuous it is. In the case of the pigroach, his spending is just as imaginative as his vest or hat goals.

He leased a 320i. An entry level bottom tier BMW. We are talking maybe 35k for his Xdrive model. Had it at least been a 5 series then maybe I'd agree with you. And his car reveal video was fucking hilarious. Explaining how his key fob worked like no other car makes offered it, my older (older than his BMW) Nissan had it, and talking about his "special made just for BMW tires". They were fucking chunky Continentals. I don't remember what year his 320i was but I Want to say it was a 2013, and if it was, I am pretty sure those came with Michelins from the factory, not to mention a detuned 4 cylinder engine. So he may not have even had stock tires on the car when he got it.

He saw it as a status symbol because it was a BMW, but it was an unexciting pleb level BMW that he got ripped off on.

The other part is that his priorities are backwards: He has said in about as many words that he needs to remember to have fun now that he is an adult. So instead of his priorities going necessities -> baseline savings/investments -> fun stuff they go necessities -> frivolous spending -> everything else. Combine that with the "more expensive = better" mindset you pointed out, his addictive tendencies, and his near zero understanding of credit (he said on his old top haters site that only the rich could afford to not be in CC debt after the holidays) and he really does burn through about $10,000 a month with nothing to show for it.

Edit to add: The other issue is that Phil has few or no hobbies other than wrestling. At least if he were into 40k or D&D he'd run out of things to buy eventually, but that doesn't apply to Champions.

Edit x2: The other issue is that Phil spends all his time either indoors or shopping - he never goes somewhere (like a park) where he isn't either consooming or being reminded of all the consooming he's done, so he's always surrounded by stimuli that are prompting him to buy even more.

That's comedy gold. I read the lore for the car and financing, including that one Destiny video, but I never actually got that it was just a 320i. I guess I should not be surprised that he is such a troglodyte he has no clue what a non-basic BMW even is, but for some reason I still assumed he got at least a 5 Series or something actually cool.

Yep. As bare bones as it comes too. It was an Xdrive which even today is only $2000 extra. But it had no packages or upgrades, and a detuned 2 liter 4 cylinder turbo making 60 HP less than the 328.

I remember someone once saying of KSI that when he goes on Amazon to buy something, he searches what he needs, sets the ordering to highest price first, and buys the most expensive item because expensive=better. Phil applies this mindset to everything.

Yeah thats pretty much right, but you are missing the flex part of it. Like something in his brain figures he is entitled to having the better option. Like his weird hatred of Walmart needs to be considered. Like speaking for myself, but I was always taught that there are just things where Walmart is good enough.

But then you figure in the collectors editions. And it was always, always, always collectors editions whenever possible.
 
I'm not surprised. I bet there's some big limited time Halloween event going on that Phil can't afford to miss out on. I'd also be willing to bet that that huge thing that happened a few weeks ago that upset him and he wouldn't talk to anyone about was Kat telling him no more WWE Champions. Phil's such a bitch boy that being told no more gambling on jpgs would upset him on the same level as losing a family member.
He's been whining about the 2 big bills this week. I fucking hate that excuse. Business class internet for a residential location is around 300 bucks a month. Electric is probably 200-300 bucks month where he lives. Those are nothing, especially if you can write off the internet bill as a business expense. So, where is the other 4400 a month in business expenses going, Phil?

Anyways, to address some of the most recent discussions in here. Phil is the ultimate consumer and what corporations are aiming for nowadays. They want someone who spends all their money on unnecessary junk, and will have to work till the day they die due to having no savings. Reminds me of that meme video that goes around 4chan where someone who works in a hospital is going up too all the nurses and they're showing their bank accounts, and not a single one has over $100 in savings.

People need to stop thinking they have an actual relationship. They’re nothing more than roommates. She doesn’t give a shit about his champions spending as long as she gets 3+ doordashes a day. Phil is literally a closet gay.

Sorry to post a Doody Streams video, but Phil himself essentially proves he only grinds Champions or other mobile games outside of his streams here. The only thing left at this point is Phil finally admitting he's DownFromTheRafters/TheGunShow84 and has spent 6+ figures on this trash.
