Peter Hitchens vs Mike Graham.

I like the way Hitch compares the media to the media in the USSR which was allowed to criticize policy delivery but not to criticize policy, because policy was the result of Scientific Socialism. Similarly today, the vast majority of the media claims the lockdown is what The Science says, even though individual scientists disagree and the journalists do not have the education to even understand the arguments. And look at this

Someone's added a 3-day moving average because we've all got time on our hands and writing some code, any code probably made them feel productive. I know the feeling.

The lockdown happened on the 23rd and if it worked you should see the infection rate drop after the incubation period. Actually it seems like the US trajectory of the disease is very similar to everywhere else, in fact, it's in the top half of the spread of curves here

This phenomenological study assesses the impacts of full lockdown strategies applied in Italy, France, Spain and United Kingdom, on the slowdown of the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak. Comparing the trajectory of the epidemic before and after the lockdown, we find no evidence of any discontinuity in the growth rate, doubling time, and reproduction number trends. Extrapolating pre-lockdown growth rate trends, we provide estimates of the death toll in the absence of any lockdown policies, and show that these strategies might not have saved any life in western Europe. We also show that neighboring countries applying less restrictive social distancing measures (as opposed to police-enforced home containment) experience a very similar time evolution of the epidemic.

I think I'm about 60% convinced that the lockdown was a mistake (the Hitchens view) and about 40% convinced that it's a prudent measure (the Graham one). I don't expect a sudden change of heart by the government, but I do think they'll back away from the lockdown. I also think that people will gradually go back to work and the police will be told not to harass them unless they're doing something egregious.

It's worth pointing out that back when the lockdown was announced, I was convinced it was the right thing to do. Still things have changed since then.

Yeah... To be honest, I'm waffling too. My theory two weeks ago was that the lockdown orders would remain in place and they'd just care less and less about more and more people breaking them, until it became obvious that they were redundant. But then the financial trouble started to snowball... and I'm not sure how long we can wait.

my grandmother called me and asked if it was okay now to go to mass and I was like, why would you want to attend mass in person when you can go to a website and see any mass online?
Older Catholics (and some younger ones with conservative beliefs) have the mindset that they need to attend Mass as much as possible or they're in a state of sin -- even after their pastors have explained that "God understands" that it's not possible for them to regularly attend mass in person. More importantly, many churches across all faiths presently aren't holding services because of the logistics involved with enforcing social distancing and keeping the place of worship disinfected.

Also, some older people aren't too computer/tech savvy, so the idea of watching mass over the internet is something they have a hard time conceptualizing even though many areas still air Mass for Shut-Ins (or its equivalent) on the weekend to help them meet their weekly spiritual needs.

I'm on a mailing list from Human Times which is a news aggregator focusing mostly on personnel and employment issues.

Lot of articles recently about expected job cuts, rising unemployment, insufficient furlough/unemployment provisions due to corona. Depressing reading (:_(

For a while the mailing list normally highlighted bullshit articles about lack of trans representation in workplaces or whatever. Did make me wonder if we are going to see a drop off in people caring about a lot of modern social justice issues if things get really bad.
Nobody gives a fuck if true and honest wahman get tittieskittles and danger hair dye when they are worrying if they are going to have 3 hots and a roof.
@Allakazam223 hit the nail on the head. Financial uncertainty trumps everything for the average worker. Any workplace that wants to double down on employee diversity right now doesn't have its priorities in order.

That's where I'm at. I'm not officially shut down but am effectively.
I work in an accounting office, so our situation is similar with a good news/bad news thing going on right now. While the number of tax returns we've done for clients is on par with any other year, our bookkeeping clients are all shut down right now, so there's no money coming in from that. Even if the governor were to allow them to reopen tomorrow, they still have an uphill battle to build their client base again; and one business likely won't reopen for reasons unrelated to COVID-19.

I suspect small(er) businesses are going to feel an impact to their bottom line for the rest of year regardless of when they're allowed to reopen.

Some updates re the progress of opening up certain states. Some people want to pay those who self-isolate $50/day. I'm home nearly all day anyway. Should that come to pass believe I'll sign up. Sweet!

$50 a day is $1500 a month. I would ABSOLUTELY continue to do exactly what I already do for that dosh.

It must be nice to be one of those Twitter cunts people who can survive indefinitely only going out once a week to get food but I'm not one of those people and the longer the lockdown lasts the more chance there is I'm fucked financially.

Meanwhile I, and almost everyone I'd be meeting, are at an age when the chances of us dying even if we did get infected is very low.

It seems like it would make sense to quarantine retired people who are at relatively high risk and who won't suffer all that much financially but quarantining people of working age, many of whom can't just work from home for months on end, just doesn't make any sense.

Check Sweden. Almost exactly the same curve as the UK. This lockdown shit made nearly no difference compared to the more targeted approach. This is what mass hysteria on a global scale looks like.

the gop wants liability shields in place for the next round of funding. they want to protect businesses from "i caught the virus from here" lawsuits.

how would anyone prove that they were infected from 1 single place? as far as i know, you could catch the virus if youre downwind from an infected person breathing. i could be wrong about how easy it is to transmit. but i dont see how you could trace the infection from one source.

the parks and grocery stores were packed yesterday because it was sunny out.

Prove? Whats proof have to do with a lawsuit? Most places in the US dont have a looser pay in place so the amount of general harassment lawsuits that this virus will cause against anyplace perceived to have deep pockets ( or anyone who'll settle ) is going to be asinine. They dont put the kibosh on this the lawyers are going run wild.

Doesn't matter, you just have to be able to convince a jury, or give enough of a threat of convincing a jury to get a settlement. Look at the glyphosate lawsuits for instance.

Hey. Last news for the day. But first an apology. I'm sorry for having been unsuccessful in my task to simplify USA law for crisis charity initiatives today. I was busier than I thought I would be and to be frank wasted too much time with the political circus and the memes that came out of it because damn it was interesting today.

But let's focus on the news. They are wholesome. A bunch of very famous old spanish artists are making a charity drive for the red cross program to help with recovery in areas aflicted by coronavirus by doing the same thing the prior batch did with "resistire" but with "Pero A Tu Lado", a very old, famous and fairly beautiful love song. (Title means "but by your side.")

Here is the video:

It fits less than "resistire" but it's still beautiful. It has themes of revival (lyrics for first verse are "I have died and resurrected. Using my ashes a tree I planted. It bore it's fruit. And from this day, something started." But more importantly it does fit the red cross and other similar initiatives much better as its chorus says: "Help me and I will have helped you. For today I dreamed. About another life. In another world. But by your side."

The message of unity is also appreciated. Specially in Spain. We do have to be reminded of what happens when we don't stand by each other's side sometimes. And this crisis has been a good example of the fact that when its really time to help, even our catalonian friends can feel the call in their blood. We'll get out of this one stronger.

Another one: CA cities fear an extended lockdown may devastate them. NFG. Gee, why didn't the genius who has put the entire state on house arrest consider this? A rational quarantine policy would have substantially mitigated this problem. But, NOOOOOO...Nazi Newsom and his other little Nazi county "health directors" need their ego/power trips. Forget it. Not a penny from Washington. Go ask the governor. See if he cares. He doesn't.

"Not a penny from Washington."

Shouldn't be a problem for "nation state" California !

Flint security guard got shot and killed by demanding someone wear a facemask.

Prosecutor: Security guard told Flint dollar store customer to wear mask before being fatally shot
George Hunter and Jennifer Chambers, The Detroit NewsPublished 2:24 p.m. ET May 4, 2020 | Updated 4:27 p.m. ET May 4, 2020

Flint — Police are hunting for two men who allegedly killed a dollar store security guard because they felt he "disrespected" female relatives by insisting one of them wear a mask in the store during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said Monday he charged Ramonyea Bishop, 23; Larry Teague, 44; and Sharmel Teague, 45, with first-degree murder in connection with Friday's fatal shooting of 43-year-old Calvin Munerlyn at the Family Dollar store at 877 E. Fifth Ave. in Flint.

Bishop and Larry Teague remain at large, Leyton said at a press conference in the Genesee County court building. Sharmel Teague is in custody and awaiting arraignment, although no date has been set.
According to Leyton, the violence was sparked when Munerlyn told Sharmel Teague's daughter to put on a mask in compliance with Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's shelter-in-place order to help contain the spread of the coronavirus.

"From all indications, Mr. Munerlyn was simply doing his job in upholding the governor's executive order related to the COVID-19 pandemic for the safety of store employees and customers," Leyton said.

The incident started at 2:14 p.m. Friday, when Sharmel Teague and her unnamed daughter, who is in her 20s, entered the store, the prosecutor said.

"Sharmel Teague and Munerlyn ... got into a verbal altercation after Munerlyn told Teague's daughter that she needed to wear a face mask while inside the store," Leyton said.
"Teague's daughter left the store, but Teague began yelling at Munerlyn, who then told her to leave the store and instructed a cashier not to serve her," the prosecutor said.

"There is surveillance video that confirms the altercation," Leyton said.
The video shows Sharmel Teague leave the store in a red GMC Envoy and return about 20 minutes later with two men, Larry Teague — her husband — and Bishop, her son.
"Witnesses on the scene said they saw two black males enter the store wearing dark clothing," Leyton said. "One of them started yelling at Mr. Munerlyn about disrespecting his wife. The other black male walks up and shoots Mr. Munerlyn. ... Witnesses identified Bishop as the shooter."

When police arrived, they found Munerlyn lying in the store, bleeding from a gunshot wound in the head. Munerlyn, a married father of six who also had three stepchildren, was taken to the Hurley Medical Center in Flint, where he was pronounced dead.
Bryant Nolden, a Genesee County commissioner and director of Bertson Field House, a Flint gymnasium, said he was longtime friends with Munerlyn, whom he described as a "gentleman."

"This really broke my heart," Nolden said. "He would come in three or four times a week and he'd train anyone who wanted to be trained for free. We have a senior dance, and he'd come and dance with the seniors.
"I hope (the suspects) are brought to justice, because this was extremely senseless and totally uncalled for," he said. "He didn't bother a soul. All he wanted was to take care of his family.
"This is a loss for the community, and for me as an individual," Nolden said.

Whitmer's extended stay-home order went into effect April 27, allowing businesses to refuse service to customers who don't wear face masks. No criminal penalties are attached to the order, but state officials strongly encourage customers to wear them.
Michigan reported 43,754 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Sunday and 4,049 deaths. In Genesee County, there are 1,634 cases and 196 deaths.
A GoFundMe page was created in the slain security guard's honor. As of Monday afternoon, more than $25,000 was raised.
Saw headline "Michigan violence over face mask law" and thought "oh shit some doughnut operator took it too far. The shit libs are going to use this to strip more rights".

Both views have merit. But to paraphrase the <sarc>great Gavin Newsom</sarc> we shouldn't let the perfect become the enemy of the practical.

Michigan, USA

Our state Senate leader Mike Shirkey (R) is not recommending that people disobey Governor Whitmer's executive orders, for all that he thinks she has overstepped her authority. He claims that the Republican-controlled legislature will likely file its lawsuit against Governor Whitmer for her alleged overreach next week, and he is also in favor of a petition drive to repeal one of the two apparently-conflicting laws regarding the governor's emergency powers.
Such a petition would require 340,047 signatures to be collected by May 27th. It would be veto-proof if approved by the legislature, and would go on the November ballot if denied by them.

SHUTDOWN SHOWDOWN
Shelter-in-place order and shutdown of everything non-essential from Tuesday March 24 to Monday April 13. Friday, May 1, Friday, May 15 May 1, maybe? (archive) (executive order saved on KF) . The Republican-controlled legislature has refused to extend Governor Whitmer's emergency authority. Governor Whitmer insists her emergency orders are all still in effect (Rundown on the laws). The legislature has passed a bill that would incorporate many of her orders into law, while not extending her emergency authority. She has previously said she will not sign any bill that limits her office's powers (archive). She has not yet signed or vetoed this bill.

OTHER SHUTDOWNS
Recap from NPR
Lawsuits against the shutdown order are multiplying (archive, archive). However, "all deadlines applicable to the commencement of all civil and probate actions and proceedings" are suspended until the end of the states of emergency and disaster. Executive order, and thus in limbo. (archive). Major protest at the State Capitol April 15 (A&N thread). Minor protest outside Governor's Mansion April 23 (archive). Protest at the State Capitol April 30 (A&N Thread).
The Big Three Auto manufacturers (Ford, GM, Chrysler) have closed all factories in the USA, putting well over 150,000 workers out of work. This figure does not include workers at supplier factories, which were also obliged to close. (archive) (archive) (archive). They are still making a small number of parts for emergency vehicles, and production of ventilators, etc. has begun (archive- GM's ventilators, April 17.) Ford is preparing to reopen (archive - April 26).

ECONOMY AND MISCELLANY
Over 1 million unemployment claims filed = 10% of the total population of the state, nearly 25% of the workforce (Archive - April 16).
Big Brother is watching, and he approves. Massive phone-tracking project reveals Michigan travel down by 45%, compared to 40% nation-wide (website) (news article archive).
Car crashes are down, fatal car crashes are down, and overall death is actually down. (archive - April 12)

FREE STUFF!
Evictions suspended while the state of emergency lasts (archive) Executive order. May or may not still be valid.
Water will be turned back on for all households while the crisis lasts (archive) Executive order. May or may not still be valid.

HEALTH CARE
Hydroxychloroquine banned by governor's order (archive). Nevermind LOL! Now she's asking the federal government for it and claiming the ban was a mistake in the first place. (archive). Detroit-area hospitals are testing the drug's effectiveness as a preventative on first responders and health-care workers (archive).
Elective surgeries are banned. Maybe? Who knows. If/when in effect, abortions were not included in the ban (thread).
Up-to-date count of available hospital beds, etc. in the State (the Detroit area is "Section 2, North and South.")(government website)
Detroit field hospital admits first 8 Corona patients. It will only be taking the less-serious cases. No one on ventilators.(archive - April 14)
Another field hospital in Detroit scaled back after drop in cases. Original plan was to open with 1,100 beds. Now they are only going to open with 250, planned to open April 20. (archive - April 11).
Beaumont Hospital, in Wayne, resuming normal operations after having been emptied to prepare for a Corona surge that has not yet arrived. (archive)
Our statistics are inaccurate, because deaths are being both overcounted and undercounted (archive).

LAW AND ORDER
All localities given more discretion to release prisoners early (archive). It was an executive order. Who knows if it's still valid?
Lansing (the capitol) police are not physically responding to minor crimes such as larceny, property damage, and break-ins to unoccupied buildings, including garages. Other police are adopting similar policies (archive) (archive).
Detroit shootings up, but most other crime down (archive - April 30); Muskegon police report crime is up (archive).
Breaking the lockdown is a misdemeanor, punishable by $1500 fines and 90 days jail time. (Still valid???) Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) has stated there will not be a "ramp up" of police enforcement (archive). The attorney general has left it to local law enforcement to close businesses, as her hands are full with price-gougers and con artists (archive). She is also leaving enforcement of the stay-at-home order to local discretion until the courts weigh in on it (archive).
The police cannot, at present, pull drivers over simply for being out during the shutdown (archive). Local police in the rural north and in Detroit suburbs have alike stated they will not be enforcing parts of the order (archive).

OFFICIAL DEATH TOLL

There was a software problem today, and so the counts are incomplete.
The State of Michigan reviews deaths and adds overlooked cases to the official statistics three times a week.
Since Sundays are always low owing to delayed reporting, and three days a week are inflated because of additions, I have decided to start comparing each day's death toll with that of the day one week previously.

MDHHS said:
Regular reviews of death certificate data maintained in Vital Records reporting systems are conducted by MDHHS staff three times per week. As a part of this process, records that identify COVID-19 infection as a contributing factor to death are compared against all laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS). If a death certificate is matched to a confirmed COVID-19 case and that record in the MDSS does not indicate the individual died, the MDSS record is updated to indicate the death and the appropriate local health department is notified. These matched deaths are then included with mortality information posted to the Michigan Coronavirus website.

Detroit Metro (pop. 3,860,000 total; 1,796/sq. mi.; 694/sq km):*

30,549 [sic. presumably owing to the software problem] confirmed / 3,329 dead
30,572 confirmed / 3,278 dead yesterday
(i.e. 51 new deaths, down 9 from this day last week)
Normal Detroit Metro Death Rate: 104 per day.**

Other Michigan (6,120,000; 65/sq. mi.; 25/sq km):

13,401 confirmed / 806 dead
13,182 confirmed / 771 dead yesterday
(i.e. 35 new deaths, up 3 from this day last week)
Normal not-Detroit Death Rate: 167 per day**

All Michigan (9,990,000; 103/sq. mi.; 40/sq km):

43,950 confirmed / 4,135 dead
43,754 confirmed / 4,049 dead yesterday
(i.e. 86 new deaths, down 6 from this day last week)
Normal Michigan Death Rate: 271 per day.**

Death toll doubled since: April 15.
We have been (were?) locked down since: March 24 (until April 30?),
Masks have been mandatory in stores since: April 27 (until April 30?).

** As of 2018.
*** 40, 40, and 75 statewide deaths, respectively, were added on these days upon State review. Presumably most were in Detroit, but I don't know exactly how many.

Michigan reported 43,754 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Sunday and 4,049 djeaths. In Genesee County, there are 1,634 cases and 196 deaths.
A GoFundMe page was created in the slain security guard's honor. As of Monday afternoon, more than $25,000 was raised.

Hey, these guys may go to jail but what truly matters here is that ain't nobody gon disrespect Sharmel's daughter again. I think you will find if you take a poll of the residents of a 5 square block area of the Fambly Dolla is that everyone now knows Raymonyea is, in fact, a Big Man, nobody mess wit him, and this is bullshit he got arrested cause that Uncle Tom security guard actually started shit. #justice4sharmelandlarryandraymonyea

"I think I'm about 60% convinced that the lockdown was a mistake (the Hitchens view) and about 40% convinced that it's a prudent measure (the Graham one). "

Both views have merit. But to paraphrase the <sarc>great Gavin Newsom</sarc> we shouldn't let the perfect become the enemy of the practical.

Countrywide was probably not needed, but Karens and Drain Todgers had to have it their way, which MAY have helped prevent collapse in SOME areas. Other areas seemed like it was primed for an outbreak to collapse it anyways. Still other areas don't even seem to have needed shutdowns. Looking at the curves though, it seems like they are limited by testing now. I.e. anyone whos going to be severely sick and will be prioritized for testing has been tested, until reopens occur.

Honestly though, it will be really easy to look back and say where everyone could have done better. What it seems like very few people care about right now is that it didn't kill everyone it touched, which we didn't know at first thanks to the CCP.

Why are Russian doctors "falling out of windows"? In China you disappear, or if suicide I can't believe a doctor can't come up with a better plan.

Second story? Maybe that one was just trying to escape.

Due to my work history I still have several Industrial Ozone Machines and unless you are trained to them properly you do not fuck with them. They will waste your silly little ass in 60 minutes (or less) in a enclosed area/room.

But it does the job.... It will kill Viruses... Destroy odors As well as Aunt May and Uncle Joe.... Fido the Wonder Dog and the Super Orchid that you named Tammy.

Over the years through the industry I have heard people being dumb asses and using one of these machines, leave the house and a few hours later they find their pets dead and their plants dying.

The residential ones are not powerful enough to do the job correctly. Just do not go there with the concept. I'm not.

So Ozone kills the coronavirus right? kind of tired cleaning things with pinesol or spic nspan. Figure using one for 1 hour while everyone is at work would work. I tried researching shit but government only writes bad things if you're occupying the space and all the good articles are on sites that sell generators.
