The 'Chinese Human Rights Defenders' are condemning China's measures to control the spread of the outbreak.

That the Chinese government can lock millions of people into cities with almost no advance notice should not be considered anything other than terrifying...

International law is clear that during a time of public health emergency, any restrictions on human rights should be based on legality, necessity, proportionality and grounded in evidence.

The international community should support all efforts to end this outbreak, but human rights should not be a casualty to the coronavirus crisis. The WHO declares that core principles of human rights and health includes accountability, equality and non-discrimination and participation. It even acknowledges that “participation is important to accountability as it provides … checks and balances which do not allow unitary leadership to exercise power in an arbitrary manner”. The WHO’s admiration for the unitary actions of the Chinese dictator Xi Jinping exercising power in an arbitrary manner is a direct contradiction of its own human rights principles.

If deployed intentionally i guess my bet would be on population control. China has got waaaaaay too many people. They are going to have to deal with it somehow sometime....With that said once again i have not got the knowledge to say YAY or NAY to bio-weapon. I got no clue, but that would be my guess.

China, thanks to One Child, is short of youth in general to sustain economic growth, and young women in particular. Related to that, a society with a big surplus of males who'll never be able to marry, won't be a happy one. A deliberate WuFlu would be a stupidly mistaken reaction to a perceived excess in the older population cohort.

That’s concerning but not apocalyptic. “Under observation” is not a “confirmed case”, although from what it sounds like there’ll be a good percentage of those cases end up being the real deal, if they did have contact with confirmed infected.

It’s Russia though, so who knows. It’s just as likely that a substantial portion of those under observation coincidentally happen to be political dissidents.

We still have a week or two before we find out just how well contained it actually is in the west (assuming the incubation period given by the authorities so far is correct).

Also, a lot of people have been saying this or similar throughout the thread, and I think it's very optimistic to think that people in the west are so much cleaner as a whole. We have our own share of nasty bastards.

Humans are animals, and animals are filthy. Sure, people in civilized nations might not be eating bats or smearing shit all over their floors, but to act like we're so much better that the idea of an epidemic is a non-starter is absurd.

E: If you think I'm full of shit, take note of how many people you know who know better than to cough or sneeze into their hands. Or how many people you've seen in the past year fail to do so.

Your average Chinese has about as good hygienic practices as our homeless. This is why I said if anything, it will take root in California, etc.

What are these "suitable circumstances exactly?
I received packages from Wuhan within the last month so I'm really hoping it being out in the cold is enough to kill it, and these "suitable circumstances" are very specific.
