Asbestos??

Yeah, fuck that, I grew up in a place where mesothelioma is a common industrial disease. I'll take my chances with Corona-chan instead.
Close relative died from that: drastic weight loss, check. Breathing difficulties, check. Bloody crap in lungs, check. Four years as dead man walking, getting progressively sicker...uuhhhh, yeah, I'll take the two-week ticket, thanks

What on earth does the CCP plan to do if there are 50K infected? Shut down the entire nation while the cases keep coming in? Even already the scale of the quarantine is totally unprecedented.

And what is the response from other nations when china grinds to a hault and major global supply chains are suddenly frozen?
They plan to hide in their personal bunkers while issuing press statements that everything is fine/executing the local government.

I don;t think this will get anywhere near as bad as China in the UK, US, wherever, because we generally accept medical advice, don't rely on bullshit folk remedies and refuse to take proper medicine and aren't grotesquely filthy medieval cunts in general. Our hospitals have better equipment (apparently they don't even have decent masks in these hospitals) and at least we aren't bribing doctors to get care. Nor are any of our countries anywhere near as densely populated as Chinese cities. All these things work in our favour and against China. They are the perfect petri dish with their habits, their incompetence, their overcrowding, their superstitious nitwittery, and their entirely self-centred natures which mean they are all too happy to skip quarantine and behave like perfect plague rats because nobody there gives a shit about anyone not in their immediate family circle. Low trust, low altruism. Not a good combination when you need cooperation to survive as a group.

The problem for me is the endless fucking Chinese students coming back and forth who cluster in the UK's biggest cities. They should be refused entry into the country until this is over. But this will not happen, I assure you, because these students are the universities personal milch cows nd money talks. They are throwing up endless ugly high rises in my nearest city, obliterating music venues and business premises to house the ever-growing foreign student population (most of whom are Mainland Chinese) who pay such wonderfully high fees that keep the bursars in those mid six figure salaries. Same with Chinese tourism, they are purchasers of high end goods and throw money around left right and centre. Then there are the business links everyone wants to kep sweet.
I think just basic hand washing and covering your mouth when you cough or sneeze would make a significant difference, Chinese people seem to do neither of these. Oh and wearing gloves too, none of these people are wearing gloves. I don’t think anyone posted this but fuck CNN and fuck their reporter. They went into Wuhan to get this story and then they fled the quarantine potentially spreading the infection.

Question. Would old WW1 gas mask be effective against the Coronavirus? Just in case I have to dig trenches in my yard to keep the infected out.
Might work as long as you use a new filter but the filter cartridges probably used a different plug standard back then and all the rubber and straps and stuff may have worn over time. It also probably isn't airtight anymore due to the aforementioned problems.
(Also, considering all the asbestos that plug is probably FILTHY)

Regarding the incredible, alarming and game changing statement by the Chinese that 2019-nCoV is contagious during incubation, Michael Osterholm, the Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota said this:
"I seriously doubt the the Chinese public officials have any data supporting this statement". and then:
"I know of no evidence in 17 years of working with coronaviruses - SARS and MERS - where anyone has been found to be infectious during their incubation period."

Source? That's kind of a big deal.

E: Nevermind, found a few:

No, buy new (Use my referral link I want panic buy shekels) and if you use trenches dig more then one and put spikes in the bottom of them and when they get full bury the corpses and mark appropriately with bio hazard signs.

Oh, and the fucking SPITTING too. The hacking, the gobbing of phelgm anywhere they like, in trains, in public streets, they are fucking disgusting. The folk wisdom of entire session of hack/spit/hack/spit, clearing out your mucus with great fanfare has stayed within the SE Asia diaspora too. I've heard stuff I'd rather forget in nice residential buildings coming through the walls that sounded like a fucking horror film and it was someonbe's morning 'clear my mucus out' routine. It's foul. They think spitting it into a tissue and keeping until they find a suitable receptacle is dirty, and gobbing it into the street or a floor is cleaner. That's the level of idiocy they're dealing with. Fuck, people used to let their kids dump on the floor too in mainland China, I think that may have stopped but I still recall being told about the sight of someone yanking their kids' pants down and letting them drop a turd on the floor of a restuarant carriage on a train and nobody apart from ths horrified wetserner batting a single eyelid. The horrifed westerner who actually caught full blown dysentery despite taking all the precautions he could on that trip. I mean, this was back in the day not long after they opened up, but it shows the level of dumb peasant manners and mentality they've come from not so long ago. I also recall the stories about being shown the toilet in a rural school that was a huge shed, with planks set above a large drop pit which contained six foot tall pyramids of festering human shit ... that was the early nineties.

God damn. The infection rate is as high as old childhood illnesses, the incubation period is long, and you can catch it from someone who isn't showing symptoms yet-- this throws every one of our ideas out the window. Any or all of us could already be infected and we wouldn't know till it's too late

This genuinely worries me.
People see China, California, Taiwan, Australia, Japan, etc and with that Keep Calm and Carry On shit, they think 'it's not coming to Britain, even if it is a little bit of flu, the NHS will help us, lets buy some Lemsips!!'

If this hits the UK, the NHS will start it's death rattle. The gravity of this is unbelievable and someone should be shutting down all flights from certain areas - extreme, but since when did we stop protecting our people? We're an island, we shouldn't get worldwide pandemics but here we are waiting for our first case rather than actively preventing it. Doesn't matter if a lot of people pull through, it's still unpleasant and I for one do not want it reaching our soil, let alone mutating on it.

A close family member of mine is getting on an eleven hour flight in a few days, and he's decided to wear a scarf over his face and vasoline up his nostrils. Nigga, if you on that plane, and Coronachan on that plane, you and your preexisting health conditions are gon get yeeted.

Why we're not taking this even half as seriously as the Chinese do is beyond me. People forget flu is a killer and does such a number on the body, let alone a new strain. There's a reason when people say they've got the flu and someone says 'mate, if you had the flu, you wouldn't be standing up at work right now, you wouldn't be able to move for two weeks'.

"But that's just isolationist: you're such a racist to deny sanctuary to sick Chinese people. What, do you want to be the next Donald Rump?"

On a serious note, that scarf won't take the place of a P100 face mask. Tell him to suit up with airtight goggles too, and he can carry both in his personal bag if he needs to during the security scan. In fact, just tell him to stay put for a week or so, since even with all those precautions, the odds are against him.

Been trying to keep up with this thread has been tough with how fast its been moving, made harder by trying to fight off a seasonal head cold which I pray to God is just that.

Slight PL, a good chunk of my universities international student population comes from China and so far nothing has been sent out by the university surround the outbreak, most I've heard is just people talking about it while walking around campus. I'm hoping that most of the students coming from China got back before this whole outbreak started or at least they'll seek medical aid if they think they might have it. Looking through local news there hasn't been any outbreaks related to Wuhan virus, hoping it stays that way.

I know one of my friends said he had family in Wuhan last time we talked, hopefully they're fine.(:_(

Also going to add to thread music with a nice classic, especially relevant if it turns out not to be just a head cold:

Dollar Stores all over North America will drop like flies.

Cali Uber drivers will be riding around in hazmat suits made out of garbage bags before the real panic sets in
Everything will be ok

Dr. Michael Osterhom is a big deal in the infectious disease, especially viruses & biosecurity fields. He made a seemingly valid comment/question. He no doubt, is looking for verification of that claim of 'silent transmission'.

My sister is flying to visit her friend in LA and cannot be dissuaded with FACTS and LOGIC. Hopefully thus far the asymptomatic contagious aren't at a critical mass and she doesn't bring it home but I'm not an optimist at the best of times.

Even if she misses it I expect the long contagious incubation period to spread it far and wide. I know it's still up in the air as to if the incubation period is contagious but China coming out and saying something that makes the situation sound worse seems like an option of last resort to me.

Was about to link the article, but you found a few before I could post. Anyways, this tidbit has me more optimistically curious than anything else worth mentioning.

On Sunday, Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said the risk to the American public for contracting this virus continues to be low.
"We at CDC don't have clear evidence that patients are infectious before symptom onset, but we are actively investigating that possibility," Messonnier said.
