The first CA case was UC Irvine. Someone on /pol is losing their shit about it.

China, is there something you want to tell us?
EDIT: @Gender of peace Nigga you need to get on my level of fastness

You miss an important thing about India being such a disgusting shithole. The result of living in said disgusting feces filled shithole has made it such that Pajeets are largely unkillable by biological means. And they can probably withstand more hard radiation than cockroaches. I mean they survive coming in contact with the Ganges routinely.

the sad thing is if you look, the masks you mostly see people wearing are actual surgical masks. Ie the ones OR staff wear to prevent them spreading germs (and spit) into the patient. They do remarkably little to prevent the wearer from breathing in the CoronaChan virus. They work in the wrong direction. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so terrifying,

When all is said and done it will be discovered that the Chinese Janitors installed the bio filters on backwards at the new Biohazzard/Bioweapon Lab. Sometimes you can just see the story behind the stories. And it always leads back to underpaid morons.
So how come Pajeets aren't starting plagues when they travel like Columbus did?

I've been extremely reluctant to weigh in on this and still don't want anyone to take my opinions too seriously because I'm just riffing. It's been unbelievable to me that China would use something so chaotic and unpredictable as a weapon (experiment gone wrong would maybe seems more believable?), but so many things seem so weird about this virus.

Not familiar with the specific SARS virus genes, but fuck, if this person actually used the given sequence and didn't just mess with the input to troll tinfoils on the internet, that insertion is wild. Going to go check it out for myself & will update later. For anyone interested, the WuFlu sequence is here. I remember the other day a scientist said that it looked like the Wuhan virus had almost the same reservoir as the SARS virus, which seemed suspicious because using a phylogenetic tree tool shows that the SARS-like bat virus didn't descend from SARS, the two viruses descended from a common ancestor. Assuming that the SARS-like bat virus wasn't transmissible to humans (which is a reasonable "if" to be fair), the virus would have had to recreate the same feature analogously. Interested to see more data on that. Is there a discord or group chat for computational biology nerds looking at this stuff?

Going to stress again the thing I've been concerned about the past few days. Despite this new virus appearing to have strong homology with the SARS-like bat coronavirus (like 95% iirc), bats aren't around in China at this time of the year. They're all hibernating. So this could not have come from eating bat. That's why the "snake" theory came about, but if you read the actual paper it's just bunk science. Not to mention it'd be unprecedented for it to be so generalized that it could quickly jump to reptiles from a mammal. Maybe it did come from some mammal that had come into close contact with bats, but we have no real informed guess on that, and I suspect you'd see more mutation if it switched to an animal that wasn't a bat species or closely related to bats, right? Bats are actually pretty closely related to primates, so that jump is a bit easier to make.

UPDATE: I reproduced the sequence alignment analysis that Ivan shared earlier. The sequence given by China is here. Feel free to follow along.

After a BLAST analysis on the sequence you'll immediately see the similarity to bat SARS-like coronavirus. I misspoke earlier, the match is roughly 90%. So this probably has some SNPs as well, but it'd be a pain in the ass to do that analysis so the people who are being paid for it can keep to that lol.

The graphical summary gives a quick confirmation that there's a discrepancy at that 22kb-25kb window. Worth noting it doesn't fully align in that region to the SARS sequences either. Closer to the sequences at the bottom for sure.

Now trying the MSA viewer and zooming into that region...

Yeah, I see what they're pointing to. It's not a perfect match, but it's interesting. The regions are highlighted with shoddy green and purple boxes in paint. It's not "Old human SARS" though, it's a newer thing that was sequenced in June of 2019 at some university in Beijing. That said, I don't know what its relationship to SARS or the bat SARS-like virus is. Need to make a phylogenetic tree including the new mystery sequence and get a sense of its relationship to SARS and bat SARS-like (maybe tomorrow, or someone else here could look into that). Only thing I remember on this is that an earlier analysis seemed to suggest that SARS and bat SARS-like are not directly related, they descend from a common ancestor. Here's the mystery sequence in question: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/MK211376.1

I don't want to speculate about what this means rn, just wanted to give a confirmation to what the previous analysis found and clarify on the "old human SARS" bit. If anyone more specialized in phylogenetics wants to butt in, please do lol. I need to read more about 2003 SARS tbh.

I played a lot of pandemic 2 and plague inc. Usually the AI starts to close down airports and waterways by this point. Why the fuck is nobody doing this and why does every country newly infected keep saying don't worry its "Low Risk" even though its silently transmitted while China is flatlining their economy and quarantining 50 million people in over 15 cities? Really makes you wonder 🤔
Possibly because authoritarianism in theory should be good at stopping diseases and invaders, so if this disease was allowed to go rampant then people would start wondering what all this state power is good for. Maybe there's some residual Mandate of Heaven ideas figuring into that as well.

Regarding the incredible, alarming and game changing statement by the Chinese that 2019-nCoV is contagious during incubation, Michael Osterholm, the Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota said this:
"I seriously doubt the the Chinese public officials have any data supporting this statement". and then:
"I know of no evidence in 17 years of working with coronaviruses - SARS and MERS - where anyone has been found to be infectious during their incubation period."

If this keeps up, things could get... messy.

What on earth does the CCP plan to do if there are 50K infected? Shut down the entire nation while the cases keep coming in? Even already the scale of the quarantine is totally unprecedented.

And what is the response from other nations when china grinds to a hault and major global supply chains are suddenly frozen?

Who?

Would Army Surplus stores be the best place to buy gas masks or no? Which make me wonder if soldiers in our military are forced to carry around their gas mask for the time being.

You don't need a gas mask. N100 masks with eye protection are sufficient. They're also easier to doff without contaminating your hands than a full mask.

Without powerleveling too much, my fiance's family's town is one of the ones under quarantine now. They went from having a handful of cases less than a week ago to hundreds sick. Whatever is going on, the CCP is in full panic mode now.

What worries me is the isolated cases in the US. I'm worried about seeing an explosion in numbers in another one to two weeks as people in contact with international travelers start to show symptoms. Again, this likely won't kill many in the US, but it will cripple our emergency health system. A bus crash could cripple my county's only ER: you would have to divert patients to other hospitals. But when everybody is seeing an influx of hundreds of people showing pneumatic symptoms, there is nowhere else to send them. How the fuck do you even quarantine that number without getting immunocompromised patients sick as well?

Hold on to your butts.
