i live on the northeast coast of the US, i don’t think there are any cases here yet, but about 20% of my schools population are chinese internationals and just came back from break

So it sounds like she works at an education center. Their contracts, while they pay decently, also come with a bonus pay clause. The bonus pay is based on a few behavioral factors. The easiest way to start losing a bonus is to miss a day of work. So you lose 20% for every day you miss, EVEN if it's a legitimate illness. Miss five days at any time? No bonus.

I bet people won't get those bonuses, even when the centers open back up. They would use the missed work clause to deduct the bonuses, even though people may have literally been held back by the military to not let them go anywhere.

I also expect Atlanta to be one of the next. On part with New York considering it's also a major transfer hub. Something tells me if it hits Schipol, then things are very, very problematic.

The way the Chinese government treated the whole thing, how people are dying in the streets, doctors crying, people hiding symptoms to spread the disease, that Harvard doctor on tweeter saying it's super contagious and pandemic levels of bad... all of this is honestly horrifying.

If it helps to calm you down, so far all fatalities have been elderly Chinese people most of which already had something wrong with their lungs. There has been no confirmed death of a normal young or middle aged healthy person so far and (TMI) docs in the country I'm in seem to have already taken care of the 8 infected we had yesterday.

I wouldn't worry too much if you take care of yourself otherwise.

Looks like China is really panicking on this one, which is interesting because the usual response is denial. I wonder if that’s just a consequence of more internet phone enabled citizens or a marker of real panic?
As I said before, any one of these viruses that emerge has the potential to be bad news or just emerge and fizzle out. This one doesn’t look so bad yet, less lethal than sars but more transmission. There’s a particularly nasty respiratory virus going around where I am at the moment, with the same symptoms (high rate of pneumonia complications.) it’s very hard to distinguish the usual flux of stuff that circulates this time of year from a new virus without a testing program.
