I don't think this will be a Global Pandemic. Probably more akin to a very bad flu season. But there are some major signs that the Chinese Government has not been playing straight with anyone. They quarantined three cities. Really? And they are rapid building a special hospital in the main city just to treat Coronavirus. Something has them really spooked. The CCP doesn't normally do this for fear of being perceived to have lost the "Mandate of Heaven".

I know we have way better technology to capture things than we did with SARS, but were people just dying on the streets then? Plus, you’re running into a cultural distrust of modern medicine and the government in China that just will cause all sorts of problems of people not going to get treatment that’s similar to what happened in Africa.

We have global pandemics all the time:

WHO said:
A pandemic is the worldwide spread of a new disease. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new influenza virus emerges and spreads around the world, and most people do not have immunity. Viruses that have caused past pandemics typically originated from animal influenza viruses.

It's spread around the world. The numbers don't matter that much, what matters is how many places in the world it crops up.

Technically it'll be pandemic if people who live in the area get infected by travellers on multiple countries on multiple continents.

Just because it's a pandemic doesn't mean it's a extinction event.

Isn't the way the Chinese economy works all smoke and mirrors, too? Something about a fake currency used internally and a fake currency used externally, with only the CCP allowed to convert between the two? When that shit all comes apart at the gears expect some shrapnel to hit other countries, including the US -- and I'm sure it'll be Trump's fault somehow.
That sound more like Cuba with the "convertable" Peso and such.

I think the improvements to the Chinese economy are both real and massive ... but (i) unlike what a lot of people think, the economic model is not a Chinese (Communist) invention, but is adapted from both Soviet models and the economies of the Japan and the East Asian tigers (which itself comes from the work of Alexander Hamilton and Friedrich List) and (ii) the models have a tendency to produce stagnate economies after decades of rapid growth (cf. the Era of Stagnation in the USSR and Lost Decade of Japan), thanks to high indebtedness.

So I doubt we will see a "crash" (especially since Beijing seems pretty adept at diffusing financial difficulties), instead we could slowing of growth follow by stagnation.

While some Chinese are busy reselling the mask stock they acquired earlier for over 100 yuan and some are offering escaping assistance for 1000 yuan, Japanese stores are selling mask at a discount, being cheered on by Chinanet. But jap bastards amirite? Even says "China ganbatte".

Perhaps they should have taken after that one Emperor who had a primitive seismograph built in the capital which could give a heading on which which direction an earthquake's epicenter was so they could send relief expedition that way before a delegation from whichever city got hit can reach the capital.

For fuck's sake, the technology exists for them to use their mass surveience, their manpower, and their authoritarian conditioning to enforce an effective quarantine of what is now considered even among the heavily suppressed Chinese public sentiment to be a plagued zone. The amount of people bragging about escaping the quarantine dragnet is concerning due to how easily wealthy chinks retreat to foreign holdings and proceed to brag that they took medication to suppress a fever and avoid detection and quarantine

Personally I don't think the ChiComs ever held the mandate of heaven and I think a lot of their captive populace are waking up to this fact

Walking down the street of Hong Kong, you can clearly see 80% of old fart( those who is clearly over 50) havent wear a mask, so is about 30% of the younger generation. This continues into enclosed environment.

Bitches please don't crawl to hospitals when you are coughing litres of blood just because you just wont bother to take precution

The more disturbing thing will be if it hits Africa. Remember Belt and Road. There are a lot of Chinese people doing a lot of projects in Africa, who all just went home for the Lunar New Year this week. What happens when they start going back to Africa?

The US and Canada are not particularly threatened by something like this. Mainly because of our lack of population density. We tend to be very spread out. We don't have the massively crowded mass transit systems and city streets, except in a few dense urban areas. Even NYC at Rush Hour on the Subway is roomy compared to most Chinese trains. The worry globally with this one is it seems to have a longer incubation period than SARS did. SARS like many "everybody panic" diseases tended to burn itself out fast due to the speed of infection and incubation. Many strains of Ebola are similar. There are limits to how many people you can come in contact with before you are obviously sick. The clock is running in hours not days. this new one might be a bit longer.

Eight cities. Not 3.

I dont think it is to paranoid to stack on food and stuffs, as long as they have a long shelf life. You can use them later even this event isn't as big as you imagine.
I got wise to "prepping" when Mt St. Helens blew in the state of WA. Even though I lived 200 miles east of the mountain, we had 8 inches of fine ash everywhere. The main west-east trucking and railroad route that supplied all the grocery stores in my area were totally closed to traffic for 3 days. The grocery stores were empty in about 7 hours. The liquor stores sold out even faster, lol. I started my food and water stores then. Since then, I have been through 2 firestorms and 3 ice storms. My stores have stood me in good stead, as has the generator and fuel storage I have made sure to have. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some crazy end-of-the-world conspiritard, but there is some wisdom in the beans, bullets and bandaids mindset. You can't always depend on the modern conveniences to be available.

There's something oddly comforting about seeing normies gnashing their teeth and running in circles over this shit.

Whenever I'm genuinly worried about something no one seems to care, whenever everyone cares I can't give a shit. Although, I'm a frequent traveler with lifelong lung problems, so maybe I should get started on my obituary.

Same! When normies freak out, the politicians listen. And the MSM media is, in all honesty, fapping to this shit. They can finally get donuts in the break room courtesy of the boss again.

For example, when I go to The Guardian to see the live updates, they always put this shit between them:

Fuck you. There are people who are honestly worried to death that this is going to be World War Z and you have the galls to post this shit in between your updates every hour??? The media is eating this shit up.

Rights to kill babies and more rights to kill babies, then everyone I don't like is misinformation babble babble babble blahblah blah
I hope a special kind of virus such as superAIDS gets developed and only journalists can get them. I've found the name "The Guardian" funny ever since I got an autistic switch console and played that Zelda game.

It's these annoying little fucks that haunt you in the beginning, and now you just chop all its legs off.

Ok chaps we need us some thematically appropriate music for the coming nightmare

Here are my entrants the reasonings for their inclusion

DONT FEAR THE REAPER - BLUE OYSTER CULT
https://youtube.com/watch?v=ClQcUyhoxTgReason: It was used in both the book and miniseries of the aforementioned The Stand by Stephen King, sums up the general acceptance most doomer wannabes in this corner of the internet have with the prospect of dying of a neo-plague quite well, and honestly its one of my favourite songs so I kinda had to nominate it

EAST HASTINGS - GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR
https://youtube.com/watch?v=jBw7k85uaDQReason: Best song of the already sublime soundtrack to 28 days later which is probably my favourite pandemic apocalypse movie and one of my top three favourite zombie movies anne-frankly given the footage of the deserted Wuhan coming out it fits really well given its use in the "empty london" scene

WHEN THE MAN COMES AROUND - JOHNNY CASH
https://youtube.com/watch?v=k9IfHDi-2EAReason: It was prominently used in the surprisingly awesome intro sequence to the frankly mediocre Dawn of the Dead remake and its lyrics are literally quotes from the book of revelations so it seems appropriate
I nominate King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
