According to PJW, the 13 cities now under quarantine have ~40 million people in them.

This is the equivalent of quarantining the entire population of California.

I don't think you are being ridiculous. Perhaps a little trigger happy and your acting a bit too soon. I'd give it 10 more days because by then a calculation of spread, incubation and fatality will be well established and simulations can be then run with some degree of accuracy. But if there is a real leap BEFORE that 10 period, I'm probably gonna be the guy right next to you in the supermarket grabbing supplies. It'd be a real shame cause I fucking love chinese food.

You don't see the bad news because I only post when there's serious news. As far as I'm aware, I'm really the only one that would consistent put this shit out. 1000% times zero is still fucking zero. SARS was caused by bats and civets, this new virus is caused by bats and allegedly snakes that were bit by the bats, which some in Wuhan consumes raw.
I'm more than happy to chant on about how the infrastructure is new and well planned, how public transport is cheap, how good the HSR is for travelling... sure. Food standards are still low as fuck. Not much has changed. Gutter oil is rid of, harmful chemicals used in baby powder is no longer an issue... yeah the big and nasty stuff is kind of sorted. How about the sanitary standards, the openness of markets enabling cross contamination? Have you been to China? Because I can tell you that absolutely nothing has changed when it comes to these markets and the filth they are.

Did you see how the officials handled the virus in the beginning? They saw it as a joke. Case in point, this entire thing is preventable. This virus is 80% similar to SARS, you'd think they learned the lesson.

This is exactly why my average meal in China would cost $30, costs twice as much compared to what I eat in Australia, the portions are kind of small too, that's for a country with very cheap food that's not at all unhealthy. You don't think it's pathetic? I have to shop at Japanese and western import stores seen as posh and unnecessary. Also the tap water there is undrinkable, well you can drink it and get sent to the hospital like the 11yo of myself.

But yeah, some weird bugs are killing people, why should I care? People die in Africa at bigger masses, mosquitoes and dogs kill more people than contaminated food. Let's play this goalpost game indefinitely.

Tha'ts exactly how I feel about the Mid-West of America. Poverty lashed states barely making it by and gobbling up Billions in Federal Funding. I'd wish we pulled the Federal Funding and watched it turn into Survivor Series.

CA's state debt alone is about 1/20th of the entire National debt at some 1.3 trillion as of 2017

Ya know I had a pretty cynically nasty thought just now

It would theoretically be terrifyingly easy for various governments/spook agencies opposed to china or who might benefit from china getting knocked down a peg to flood the internet, especially the chinese corner of it, with terrifying yet plausable lies and rumors about the "true" extent and "true" severity of the disease.

Thus when the chinese government desperately tries to wipe this material off its internet, their plausibility will be confirmed to the population who are at this point aware of the CCP's cover-up attempts, and will potentially kick of a mass panic that could very easily cripple the whole country and leave long lasting damage on its power structure.
 
They just gave a "situation report" about the virus on TV. It's the national program everybody watches on Chinese New Year's Eve. It talked about Xi and the Party more than the actual fucking researchers.

Unsurprisingly Chinese citizens seem to have little to no faith in their goverment being able to handle this.
I don't think anyone would put it passed the goverment to just try and quietly kill off infected people once the number gets too high.

China will look poorly at media outlets that sensationalize the story. So, for large media networks what are they to do? Inform you or stay on the good side of China so they can sell their movies and printers and cars to the Chinese?

We really are living in the most boring of distopias. "WE let the world burn so we could make .0001% more money off impoverished Chinese people who were committing genocide against various other people. Totally worth it."

This is genuinely terrifying, and the Chinese government is clearly more interested in saving face and cracking down on the truth than protecting their citizens from an epidemic. I feel sorry for all the people affected.

Media outlets largely haven't been sensationalizing, they've just been repeating what Chinese officials say. Posts on Chinese social media are what paint a different picture and aren't being publicized, at least yet. Which is sort of understandable, because all they could say is that it's alleged (though worth noting that hasn't stopped them in the past lmao). Some of the more discrete actions of China within affected areas in the past few weeks shows they've been reacting strongly to contain disease, despite heavily downplaying the virus publicly, like disinfecting Shanghai during the time that they and Western media claimed only 5 people had been affected and claiming that the virus only spread from animal to human.

If you know anything about China, it's that they're not ones to be abundantly cautious. They prefer trying to play up social stability, even if it means risk of exacerbating the problem. That's in part why they're so bad at containing these kinds of epidemics to begin with. In Huanan where the outbreak appeared, a community meal was shared in some sort of symbol of unity. If they're quarantining 10s of millions of people in the span of days, that's something to turn your head to.

I'm normally the first to blame spooks, but I don't see it here. You're underestimating the deceitfulness of China.
