After devoting much time to Wizardry 8, I decided to make this thread for anyone that has played any of the Wizardry games, be it any of the main series entries or the spin-offs that came from Japan. What are anyone's thoughts on the series, be it the entire series or any individual entry?

I've played 1, 2, 3, and 5 (complete with my own hand-drawn maps on graph paper) and they were all fantastic. I briefly tried 6 but the new battle system seemed too tedious and fiddly.
I recommend looking up the fan-translated SNES remake of Wizardry 1+2+3. I think that's the best point of balance between the early-80s PC originals and the fully-polygonal versions I'm sure they have today.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm off to stumble into a Fizzle Field, get my hobbit thief ashed by the Cone of Fire, and then Malor into solid rock XD

The anime was okay.
You mean this?
It was okay as you say. If they somehow were to make another, I'd like to see their take on Wizardry 8.

Yeah I think so.

If they do another they should get Rob Woodhead to voice King Trebor.
A Knight of Diamonds one would be nice or one where Werdna does come back and he is the main character in it all.

I keep trying to play 6, and mother of fuck is it hard. My parties used to just get decimated by bats three minutes into a game, though lately I can last about fifteen minutes and two encounters with small pests before I get my ass handed to me by a group of rogues. I keep feeling like I need to get better with the character creator, but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Try looking up some walkthroughs to know what kind of party to build. It could help in the long run, especially since this is one of the games that lacks any maps save for a player made map.

The only thing I know about the Wizardry series is that
Brenda Brathwaite Brenda_Romero.jpg
married John Romero th.jpg .

And if the Wizardary series has a large sword named after a corrupted Japanese word, I am blissfully unaware.

Considering that fact I may as well add in this: Dibella, one of the Nine Divines of The Elder Scrolls, was named after Mary Jo DiBella. Aside from being a tester for Daggerfall, DiBella was a tester for Wizardery 8.

One other thing to say about Wizardry is that to this day, it's still going on in Japan. Last game made as far as I know was an MMO.

Hope nobody minds me casting Kadorto on this thread.

Recently got back into Wizardry. My sister got me a handheld emulation device for Christmas and I found very quickly that one of the best uses for it was playing RPGs, especially either in the wee hours of the morning or late at night before bed (its like reading a book before sleep).

And for some reason my brain said it wanted Wizardry, especially since this device looks like a Gameboy and all the Gameboy Wizardry games have English patches now.

Question, guys.... does anyone here have a translation for the "Story" sections of the Wizardry Gaiden manuals (as well as the Wizardry Empire manuals?) With the main PC games, I always like reading the background story before I go into the depths and risk getting my head lopped off by fucking Highwaymen on level one.... it was always the highlight of older RPGs for me actually, made the world feel more real.

With Gaiden 1 and 2 there's stuff in-game to quickly catch you up, but in Gaiden 3 and 4 I'm at a loss. And for the Empire games I just have no idea.

...... Also surprised this topic didn't get revived when the Wizardry 1 remake was announced.

First got introduced to Wizardry when I used to watch an older cousin play some of the older games on PC as a little kid.

Then many years later, I ended up playing Wizardry 8 and finished it a few times with different party configurations. Definitely one of the most grueling and difficult games that I've ever played. I can't recall how many times my party got disemboweled by a group of random ruffians on the Arnika Road. Great times, great memories and it probably fueled the addiction that I have for Souls games.

One of the finest game series' ever made and I would be so happy if they could remake more of the games. I understand that it's a real mess from an Intellectual Property perspective, but one can hope.

I find myself wondering why they didn't remake the first five all in a batch. From what I've heard the remake of the first one literally runs off the code of the Apple II original, its basically a romhack.

So like, why not do at least the first five?

(Responding to a years-old post I know but)....

The great thing about the Wizardry OVA is its nice that it doesn't overstay its welcome, and yet is fun enough to revisit every so often.

If they did Wizardry 8 though, wouldn't they also have to do Wizardry 6 and 7?

BTW anyone in this thread: what exactly is the deal with Wizardry Gold?

Nerd.

That being said, Wizardry is why I can't get with party-based RPGs having anything but turn based combat, or at least the first example of it. Controlling six people and I'm expected to plan their attacks on the fly? Bitch, I have to type in mahalito three times a turn, I'm not doing that while under real time attack!

I always wanted try making a first person DRPG. I really think there's a lot of untapped potential in the format.

As for Wizardry itself, there have been a lot of remakes going on with the series. Does anybody know what changes they made to Proving Ground of the Mad Overlord and The Five Ordeals? I've heard some complaining on that front but I don't know if it's just the missing scenario editor or if it's more than that.

And I don't know what's going on with Wizardry Variants Daphne's delays and stuff but "Japanese Free-to-Play Mobile Game" means it's probably gonna suck no matter how much I appreciate it's PS2 but better looking graphics.

I had to look up "The Five Ordeals" because I had legit never heard of that one.

Steam's own trailer for Ordeals talks about graphics updates and new scenarios. I've never heard of any Wizardry game having a scenario editor... but I had never heard of Five Ordeals before today either.

In fact my knowledge of the Wizardry series only goes up to Tales of the Forsaken Land (which I've heard of but never played) and that there's apparently an adventure game spinoff (I believe called Nemesis: A Wizardry Adventure or something).

Question: Does the series even have a canon anymore? Cuz I know the first three games all involved a city called Llylgamyn, then W4 was about the first game's villain... then there was a trilogy about a magic pen that could reshape reality being used by a bad guy in order to find the location of an even betterer all-powerful artifact....

But with the Japanese side of things it seems like they can just call anything "Wizardry" and call it a day.

CrookedB's Let's Play in writing for Wizardry 4 is probably the only reasonable way any human can be expected to digest this scenario, in this or any other reality. It's okay to read someone else's guide and research, because at some point we all have to admit "I couldn't do it myself." I can't. I can't beat Wizardry 4, not even close. I couldn't even make 50% progress on La Mulana 1 or 2 without the guides. But CrookedB doesn't make you feel bad for reading a guide, he makes you feel better for coming along for the ride, that's all you can ever expect or ask for.
