Windows gets new CCleaner-style cleanup tool

Microsoft has released beta version of PC Manager and helps identify slowing down apps
May 22 2023, 09:00

CCleaner is probably one of the most popular tools under Windows to clean up the PC - even if it is not entirely uncontroversial. There have been privacy concerns in the past, and the installer even contained malware. Nevertheless, the program enjoys great popularity. Now Microsoft has developed its own program of the clean-up tool and published the new beta version of its PC manager, as "Winfuture" reports.

Cleanup functions for Windows
Once the tool is installed, a new icon appears in the systray (the area next to the clock). If you click on it, a floating widget appears, in which many standard functions can already be performed with one click. For example, you can empty the Windows temp folder and free up disk space from here. There is also a function to free occupied memory.

Also integrated is the health check, which not only detects malware, but also makes suggestions for optimization, for example by preventing the automatic start of rarely used software. There is also a function for cleaning up the hard disk - the tried and tested Disk Cleanup has probably been integrated into the PC Manager here. In addition, large files on the Windows partition can be tracked down. Background processes can also be conveniently removed. Practical: Windows startup can also be accelerated. The new tool measures the boot time and identifies apps that delay the startup process.

Microsoft PC Manager version 3.0.0.2 Beta is now available as a free download. A PC with Windows 11 or Windows 10 (build 1809 or higher) is required. Microsoft has created its own homepage for the tool, where there is not only a download and description, but also the possibility to exchange information with other testers via Discord. So it's been a minute, but this sounds like a good thing? I get to clean up my (pretty new) laptop and search for Malware outside defender? Well alright.

This just looks like a bunch of short cuts to get to various Windows settings.

There's a disk cleanup feature located in storage settings (and a more advanced one found by right-clicking on a disk).
Health check is part of Windows Defender.
Process management and startup apps are parts of Task Manager.

I mean it certainly makes it more convenient for guys like me that just want one control panel to access all these functions. I see it as a win, a improvement in user friendliness

if it's anything like the rest of their applet "improvements", it's barely functional, doesn't allow you to configure it in any way, and at least partly exists to push new Microsoft products/services on you. Microsoft's incompetence means third party tools are and always will be necessary to make Windows bearable to use. install Arch fuckers
