As the NFL prepares to launch its 101st season, the 45th President, his supporters, and his family members will be coming after the league. So will the NFL defend itself, and its players, as the tweets begin on Thursday night, when Texans and Chiefs players (and Texans coach Bill O’Brien) kneel during the national anthem in peaceful protest of systemic racism and police brutality?

Maybe not.

Peter King recently asked Commissioner Roger Goodell about the looming intersection of presidential politics and pro football, saying to Goodell, “You know the president is going to hit you with a two-by-four.”

Said Goodell in response: “With all due respect, I don’t know those things. . . . I guess you know these things. You’re going into hypotheticals, you know, maybe it will, maybe it won’t. I think we said we’re going to support our players. This is a peaceful protest and we’re going to support them if they choose to do that.”

It’s not a hypothetical. It’s happened before, and it will continue to happen. Indeed, it flared up on Monday, when one of the president’s sons declared that “[f]ootball is officially dead — so much for ‘America’s sport.’ Goodbye NFL. . . . I’m gone.” That comment came merely in response to last week’s story that Cowboys players have received a “green light” to protest during the national anthem, without any protests actually happening.

What happens when the protests occur this weekend on a widespread basis? What happens when the President and those who support him see names like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and Jacob Blake prominently displayed on rear helmet bumpers? What happens when they see the anti-racism messages printed at the back of each end zone?

What happens if/when the next video emerges of police brutality against an unarmed Black man or woman and NFL players launch an NBA-style wildcat strike?

Maybe the Commissioner is playing his cards close to the vest. Hopefully, he is. The NFL can’t simply wander into this crowded minefield without a plan for handling the inevitable explosions.

Frankly, the plan needs to be to fight back. Supporting the players means more than simply saying, “We support the players.” Supporting the players means standing up to anyone and everyone who will try to bully or attack them.

At a time when some owners are trying to thread the needle regarding support for player protests while also hoping that they choose to stand for the anthem, the more awkward needle to be threaded with a big, fat camel relates to the broader notion of having their players’ backs while simultaneously cramming money into the President’s front pockets. The latest Trump (son) tweet reconfirms that support for players and support for the President cannot be reconciled.

If the NFL once again stands silent in the fact of a torrent of tweets and other attacks, the disconnect will become even more glaring.

Had no idea about EA doing this because I avoid EA games like the plague,Definitely not surprised EA would do something like this though,The new Madden game seems to be pushing some wokeness too, at least that's what I gather from some some YouTube videos that popped up on my feed.
Colin Kaepernick is in the game, and he has Madden rating of 81, which is higher than 17 starting QBs including Ryan Tannehill who led the Tennessee Titans to the AFC Championship after upsetting the Patriots and Ravens.

And the game is lazy as all hell.

I think they made the Colin K. announcement to try to alleviate some of the massive backlash they got for the game.

A healthy reminder that MADDEN NFL 21 is on record to being one of the worst games this year, and EA decides to add Kaepernick in the game with a better rating than half of the quarterbacks in the league.

The Kaepernick thing enrages me, so I'll sperg about it again.

- Prior to the kneeling stuff that made him such a controversial figure, Kaep was 2-22 in his last 24 games as a starter and got benched in favor of Blaine Gabbart. So the talk that he's a hidden talent that needs to play....yeah, I'm not so sure. He had promise at one point but was clearly in decline.
- The 49ers did not kick him off the team. He opted out of his contract. Big difference.
- The Ravens tried to bring him, with Ray Lewis advocating to bring him in, and they were in negotiations...until Kaep's girlfriend sent out a tweet that suggested Ray Lewis was a loyal slave working for his white masters in the Ravens organization. Disrespecting the greatest player in that team's history by suggesting he goes "Yes mastuh! Whatever you want mastuh!" to the front office is not a great way to get hired.
- And just last year, he had that public tryout and, fuck me up the ass, he had representatives of 27 of the 32 teams express interest in appearing...and then Kaep cancelled the tryout the day of.
- Since his time away from the game, he has gotten a huge deal with Nike, gotten a deal to have a documentary about him produced, and now he's going to be making money off of a Madden game despite the fact that he hasn't played in 4 years.

I use all of this to highlight that 1) No, Kaep was not blacklisted from the NFL and he had opportunities to stay in the league. He could have stayed with the Niners. He could have gone to the Ravens. He could have been picked up by one of the 27 teams that expressed interest in him. He (and in the Ravens' instance, his girlfriend) shot all of those down.

And he has turned being a martyr into a multi-million dollar business. He is probably making more money now than he was playing the game. So forgive me if I don't feel sorry for the poor rich baby.

I agree with Stephen A Smith's original assessment of the situation before he ultimately backtracked: Kaep doesn't want to be a player, he wants to be a martyr.

When I saw online that fans were booing the dumb bullshit at the Chiefs game I called my dad and asked him if he was watching the game. He said "Why would I be watching that garbage?" and I told him what was happening and he instantly changed the channel. Maybe that's how the NFL get viewership back up, by having fans degrade their players after being told they were problematic.

EDIT: Apparently the fans could have been also booing the Texans for not being present during the national anthem. I dunno I like football fans not being pussies for once more

If 2020 results in entertainment or "circus" industries collapsing then this will be the best year yet.

EA (and Activision) can do what it wants I've been on a boycott of their stupid shit for 7 years and they didn't make anything that would so much as tempt me to give them money yet. All their games are made for people with severely limited cognitive ability and zero attention span.

Movies are shit, nothing but gender/race flipped mary sue lead remakes and prequels.

And sports was always gay shit watched by crypto fags, will never understand how watching muscular milionaires chase a ball is entertainment but I guess it's made to appeal to lowest common denominators in society.

NFL's 18-49 rating and total viewership are both down 16 percent from last season.
It is the lowest number in both demo and total viewership for the opening game of the NFL in 10 years.

NBA playoffs started the same way. "Oh, that percent isn't that bad. That decline isn't as big as I expected.
Maybe its just due to the lack of crowds." Some NBA games lately were down 25, 30, 40 percent,
with the league down about 28 percent recently.

Its only just begun.

Reportedly the fans were booing BLM which appeared on the jumbotrons in the stadium which wasn't shown on television.

Either way, ratings being down as much as they are for the opening game doesn't bode well at all.

This is the best they can do with their opening game :story:

Can't wait to see what the numbers look like in six weeks

If you'd have told me that there would be a year where liberals are defending football while conservatives would be boycotting it I'd have asked what you were smoking.

This monomaniacal push towards giving the average person no escape from idpol propaganda is going to be what kills the trend. People are willing to let others clutch their pearls only until it inconveniences them to the point of annoyance, and I think that these last few years have accelerated the process.

I bet black NFL and Madden fans are slapping their heads on Kaepernick being over powered and promoted on Madden. I guess actual football skill and athleticism doesn't match to a media diva.

Catch AIDS more like. Because its gay.
Not gayer than soccer.
So........II guess no one is looking forward to the playing of the blactional anthem?
blactional anthem?

Is it spoken word?

Lol, I'm a born-and -raised, dye-in-the wool liberal. Pretty shocked by the way "my side" has abandoned core human rights lately like free speech, women's rights and due process.

No eyebrows makes perfectly normal people look sick.

He's smart. 90% of the long game is keeping your name in people's mouths. ;)

Don't forget singing the praises of Fidel Castro when he was in talks to play for Miami after the Ravens nonsense.

Praising Fidel Castro..... in Miami.

Lol, I'm old. Still remember the days when it was damn near impossible to get a decent cigar.

You been to Cuba yet? Gotta have some artistic or humanitarian excuse.

I'd love to see it but never been

I have been to Panama, it has that quaint old world feel to it. At least in the cities anyway.
It must be home to all sorts of American interference. Still, everyone I've ever talked to raves about it all the time.

Since this is a thread for people to talk about the NFL?
I have an observation.

REALLY hate that fake crowd noise because of corovid. Makes me believe the NFL has no respect for the fans and all the games are fixed.

There's nobody there! Just mic the players and make interesting.
