Will Smith Apologizes to Chris Rock in New Video: 'I'm Here Whenever You're Ready to Talk'​

Will Smith is addressing Chris Rock on camera for the first time since slapping the comedian onstage at the 2022 Academy Awards.

Four months after Will, 53, took the stage at the Oscars and smacked Rock, 57, across the face, he shared a video to YouTube, Instagram and Facebook on Friday, in which he apologizes to Rock again and tells him, "I'm here whenever you're ready to talk."

"I've reached out to Chris and the message that came back is that he's not ready to talk, and when he is he will reach out," Will said. "So I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I'm here whenever you're ready to talk."

Addressing why he didn't apologize to Rock in his Oscars acceptance speech for Best Actor, Will said, "I was fogged out by that point. It's all fuzzy."

The King Richard actor went on to say that he also wants to apologize to Rock's mom: "I saw an interview that his mother did. That's one of the things about that moment I didn't realize, I wasn't thinking, but how many people got hurt in that moment."

"So I want to apologize to Chris's mother; I want to apologize to Chris's family, specifically Tony Rock [Chris's younger brother]. We had a great relationship. Tony Rock was my man. This is probably irreparable," Will said.

At the March 27 ceremony, before his win for Best Actor, Will walked onstage and hit Rock on live television after taking issue with a joke about wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head. (Jada, 50, lives with alopecia.)

Will explained in a statement days later that the punchline was "too much for me to bear" and he "reacted emotionally."

Will, who later resigned from the Academy and was banned from attending their ceremonies for the next 10 years, said in his statement, "I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris."

"I was out of line and I was wrong," he added. "I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness."

In the time since the Oscars, Rock has made brief jokes at stand-up performancesreferencing the moment, but he hasn't yet spoken about it in length. He has said he'll "talk about it at some point" eventually.

In his Friday video, Will said, "I spent the last three months replaying and understanding the complexities and nuances of what happened."

"I'm not gonna try to unpack all of that right now but I can say to you, there was no part of me that thought that was the right way to behave in that moment," he added.

Reps for Rock did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment about Will's Friday video.


During a stand-up show on Sunday alongside Kevin Hart at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey, Rock said, "I'm not a victim, motherf---er," according to a report from Us Weekly.

"Anyone who says words hurt has never been punched in the face," Rock said Sunday, per Us Weekly.

He added, "Yeah, that s--- hurt, motherf---er. … But I shook that s--- off and went to work the next day … I don't go to the hospital for a paper cut."

Reps for Rock did not respond to PEOPLE's request for comment about the New Jersey show.

Chris shouldn't even acknowledge or mention this video or the slap again. Reject this whiney public display of "I'm sooooo sowwy I was baaaaad". Why is this even public? Why can't these elite faggots sort their interpersonal issues earnestly in private? They must always use it as an opportunity to frame themselves in some good light and gain support every time they do anything mildly controversial. It's all so blatantly transparant and self serving. MATI, I'm absolutely sick of public apologies.

I'm hoping Chris Rock is holding back because he's working on material that'll make Will Smith cry and then retract this lame ass apology.

Can't believe it's been 3 months since what happened. It's pretty obvious that it's just PR baiting to try and repair Will's image after he, a 53 year old man, slapped another man (one of his former close friends) on live television and walked back crying, proving to the world that he, Will Smith, is in fact the biggest pussywhipped bitch to ever grace Hollywood.

A fake apology for a fake slap.

All the idiots fell for this it seems. It was 100% fake. Both are actors and they are taught how to deliver a fake but convincing slap. Add in some high-quality audio equipment and a good sound clip and you got the Oscar nigger slap fest.

The academy awards have been declining in viewership for nearly 20 years. America was getting over its love affair with Hollywood in the early and mid 2000's. When they couldn't make a decent movie, it was basically over. The woke heavy handed leftist garbage hasn't helped. People want to be entertained and not preached at. We live in a time where movies aren't the only source of entertainment. Everyone has a phone, or some kind of device connected to the internet 24 hours a day that gives them access to a whole world of entertainment. Then you have other things like video games. Hollywood isn't top dog anymore.

So, what do you do? Have a nigger slap another nigger on stage at one of their many award ceremonies and say some naughty words. That should get the peasants watching again.
