Because it was all so stupid, rioting over a junkie having a river phoenix and all the shit followed resulting in him being treated as a mythical figure.
Also because he looks funny and the name is funny like a a gorilla

Kinda funny in a cosmic sort of way that some dude that got knee necked by cops while clearly showing symptoms of fentanyl OD ended up being used as a political tool for Wealthy Calfornians to burn down the rest of the country's major cities to "stop racism".
He seemed like a chill guy aside from that time he held a pregnant woman at gunpoint before the 20 dollar knee kneckjob.
