Probably both the best and worst thing I've experienced over the years. Why is it the way it is?

Because it is a gift from God and is the first step that leads to producing children which is another gift from God. True love (not sexual attraction/infatuation) is an incredible and miraculous thing and at its core is unselfish and giving. Hence it is "wonderful".

It's true, biochemicals!

It's apparently the best thing (at least for you), because your genome is the product of blind & dumb evolution, that for over generations has been foced to take the shape of something that would develop specific structures in your brain, structures that would behave accordingly to certain scenarios. In this case making you release certain hormones and the associated feelings of happiness and euphoria when sensing an organism that you deem attractive enough to feel that way.

The reason why evolution may have taken that path was to entice you, in an almost contrived way, to attempt to reproduce sexually with that organism, most likely an individual of your same species, hopefully fertile, and of the opposite sex (since evolution is blind in a sense, this is not always the case, hence why you may be attracted to femboys even if you cannot have kids with them).

Now, the reason why it could be emotionally distressing at the same time, is because another release of other chemicals in specific ratios would play a role, when your overall state of mind perceives reality in a hard to swallow way: e.g: non-reciprocated love, lack of self-esteem, depression & thoughts of inadequacy, etc.
