Why does the hallway chirp?

I've heard legends of a magical device called a "smoke detector." They say if you sacrifice a battery, it watches over you and warns you if there's a fire. This artifact is completely undetectable to a certain portion of the population, so it's difficult to confirm its existence. But, if you believe hard enough and look very closely, you might be able to see a blinking beige disc on your ceiling. If it chirps, it's telling you it's unhappy with your current offering and requires a new battery as tribute.
