Probably because some people abused it in the past, stuff like drastically editing posts months after the fact to hide what ever it was they said or editing posts to fuck with people and so on. It's a rather common practice on forums to remove the edit button after a post has been up for awhile.

I'm not sure the same rules apply to OPs, I've seen some get updated months and years after being initially made. Makes more sense for comments though

The OP is an exemption to the rule for that purpose. Everyone else just has to live with their mistakes and exceptionalism if they don't catch it quicker.
