Why does CGI in recent movies look terrible?

Like I’m comparing the new Jurassic World movie with Jurassic Park (and don’t say nostalgia because I watched it recently). It’s not good. Gladiator 2 is another example that springs to mind. Superman looks like shit. I swear the CGI from Marvel slop years ago looked better. All the Star Wars prequels and sequels looked better. What the fuck is going on?

I wouldn’t be surprised if shit on the PS5 is better looking these days. Hard to tell because it’s all CGI though.

Because they're not trying to make it blend in with things and hide it. CGI is now as blatant as Who Framed Roger Rabbit cartoons walking around with humans.

I bet its the same issue as to why old games seem to look worse; Our TV’s are better

That explains why VHS tapes look worse, but not why the CGI in Jurassic Park looks better than Rebirth on the same TV.

Also that ‘raw pixels’ label really irks me. That’s not what ‘raw pixels’ look like. That’s what zero-order hold interpolation looks like, which is not how images are necessarily supposed to be scaled. While zero-order hold is pretty close to how an LCD displays pixels, it’s not close to how a CRT displays them. ‘Raw pixels’ would be an unzoomed image on your display, dot-for-dot.

It's not the CGI itself. It's the way movies are filmed. It's not just the CGI but all the lighting, post processing and everything else it's all fake as well. In Jurassic Park, the dinosaurs were CGI, but the backgrounds, the lighting and everything else was real. In Jurassic World it's a CGI dinosaur, in a CGI environment with CGI lighting.

Because movies used to be real with CGI added, now its CGI with real added, and all the directors aren't VFX guys so they just assume the computer monkeys can fix everything in post. It's why The Creator, despite having a "tiny" 80 million dollar budget looks so good, the director is a VFX guy and know how to shoot for it and what actually goes into it.

There's no planning, they used to put almost as much though into planning the effect as making it where as now they just say fuck it "look at this tennis ball and our army of Indians will add everything in post". A great example I saw was in one of the marvel movies they needed to add sky to the background of a helicarrier bit but scarlet Johansson hair was waving in the wind so they had to meticulously key out between literally every strand of hair and it took weeks because they didn't do any on set planning.

Honestly it's because people got very complacent and lazy. Shit like LOTR or Terminator 2 still holds up to this day because they mix in a lot of practical effects and use CGI only when necessary so the eye doesn't adjust to it and we can't tell its phony. Nowadays everything is shot in front of a green screen rather than a set (I'm looking at you, Marvel).

Lord of the Rings holds up some of the time. But some of the CGI shots look like shit. Watch Legalos sliding down the elephant's trunk flinstones style and tell me you think that looks good.

This reminds me of how much I hate faux retro games with raw pixels. That's not how our games looked.
I have only seen one game sell convincing old school graphics. It was a fairly recent Metroidvania that imitated the NES style almost perfectly, if it weren't for the sound quality it might have passed as authentic. Fuck if I can remember the name though.

The new Dune was pretty good CGI-wise but the director actually had a vision and theme and put heavy emphasis on making the CGI look realistic and match the lighting and environment the movie was filmed in.

But yea agreed modern CGI looks terrible. Their movement and coloring is so obviously fake and doesn't match anything in the film. The thumb people from Spy Kids fit the movie better then the goyslop they put in Marvel movies.
