Look at this shit. Normally 65 bucks for gay men on ice. "Genorously" discounted to 45. I own quite a few much better than this, most of the time the discs are made in Mexico just like the DVD's in the Walmart bargain bin. Why?

Solution
Originally, physical sales of anime media like Blurays were targeted towards places such as rental stores rather than individual consumers, unlike in the West. As a result, they were high price low volume affairs. They never really changed this dynamic, it's just that it turns out besides rental stores, hardcore otaku were willing to pony up the large sums for the Blurays, and it was more profitable to cater to the few hardcore fans than going for the mass market and making a small profit margin (cf. anime figurines).

The one silver lining is that Japanese Blurays at least, while fleecing you for $100+, come with a bunch of extra goodies, like an exclusive game, VN, or merch.
It may be a just a file, but it's on a disc that'll last 100 years. A hard drive crashes in 10.
Can you not read? I told you, you can download the exact disc the same one you can buy, as a file. The same exact file the company who made that disc used to make it in the first place, and burn it yourself. A bluray burner to plug into a pc or laptop, is $50. $5 more than this set. And with it you can burn hundreds potentially more than that full exact replicas of this set without the box for that one time price and $40 here and there for 50 discs.

You act like the box with cool fan art is optional.

you were never complaining about not having a box, but bit rate and quality of audio on rips. I proved you 100% wrong and ignorant about that, now you're moving the goal post to be about a box when the very first thing I said was "it's not worth it unless as a shelf piece"

DVDs, Blu-Rays and other merch are how anime studios actually make a profit off of anime. The DVDs are sold at a premium price to squeeze as much money out of otaku who are interested in seeing the anime with finished, higher quality animation (since broadcast anime usually cuts a ton of corners in order to broadcast weekly). Most popular, mainstream anime are aired in the dead of night at 1 or 2am, which is the cheapest timeslot, so the big initial burst of DVD sales is what indicates the popularity of an anime series and if it's allowed to continue.

DVD/VHS sales were the lifeblood of the anime industry in the 80s-early 2010s before streaming services like Crunchyroll took over. It's never really been a sustainable industry, and as of now, studios like MAPPA, WIT and Ufotable are currently millions of dollars in debt due to the complex, stupid way that anime production is handled.

Much like the western gaming industry, Japanese animation is on the verge of collapse, but continues to survive by sheer luck. Much like western gaming, anime is propped up by a lot of young hopefuls from across the world entering the industry expecting to earn the prestige of Hiroyuki Imaishi, but ultimately getting churn-n-burned while studios invite new suckers in to restart the process. That's why a lot of talented 16-20 year old webgen animators from the US, Europe, and the Philippines are put on projects now. A lot don't know their worth.

Because weebs are dumb and autistic enough to pay those prices, its the same with those shitty vinyl figurines some old japanese guy makes in a filthy garage.

And there's are actually good bluray rips out there, use a private tracker instead of a shitty rootkit-infested torrent aggregator.
