Go turn on your lawnmower near a nest and I think you'll find you aren't as special as you think you are.

But prove me wrong.
Yellow jackets are annoying because they're always probing around looking for food but they don't go out of their way to sting humans just for the sake of it.
They're a little like dogs but not as pettable and people don't complain as much if you murder them.

Lots of people are afraid of them though so it makes you look really tough when you're totally unphased.

It's confidence. They may be tiny arthropods but they can still see and smell fear. Act nonchalant, speak to them clearly and politely.

Their intelligence is _super_ limited but exists enough to sort of ping them when your intelligence is interacting with theirs. This makes them pause, in their confused hexapod fashion. For a few seconds at least. Some take advantage of this, to run away.

Also if they're chill with you as a default, why do anything to change this? You are Wasp-Safe. It's a good way to be. You can chill where others can not. All you have to do is stay frosty, keep civil, maybe let them know in advance if you're about to make large or loud changes to their immediate environment.
