Why do people now call programs and software, apps?

You can tell someone's age by what the call things, so it's useful in that sense.

Someone calls it a PM? Chances are they remember forums from ye' olden days. They call it a DM? They're younger and infected with Twitter brain rot.
 
I think about the time smartphones became popular. So the late 2000's early 2010's. I still remember seeing people using flip phones back in like 2010 and 2011. They also call movies and games IP's now. IP stands for intellectual property.

What about IM's? They used to be called instant messages back in the AIM and Yahoo chat days.

They're not PMs because they're not private anymore.
