Because current day "liberals" are an arm of the establishment, more so than "conservatives".

In another time or place a different party would be the main arm of the establishment, and they'd hate free speech too.

It's not like any of these words mean anything so the whole business is a bit silly though. We can't even agree what a woman is anymore, how is "liberal" supposed to mean anything?

Actuall liberals (i.e classical liberals/libertarians) are fervently against censorship, although most contemporary liberal organisations aren't classical liberals but rather some sort of woke social-liberals.

stems from hatred of democracy and hard-on for dictatorship/monachy/feudalism

for the higher ups, they dont want challenges or any proliferlation of it

for the underlings, its just about being liked and being accepted by the status quo. no sense of self and their sense of self derives from belonging to the status quo. what they care most about more than anything is maintaining that status quo so they feel wanted

The opposite of what "liberalism" used to be.

They even once a long time ago let George Lincoln Rockwell (American Nazi) speak at Stanford University so they could debate him (not shout him down really debate).

Funny thing about that, during the civil rights era there were actually African Americans who were also against repealing Jim Crow laws, and their arguments were pretty much exactly the same ones that liberals now use to effectively segregate colleges but call them "safe spaces".
