why do apples suck now?

Whenever I find a good apple like fiji, they just fuck it up and I have to move on to another. Now all apples are fucked and I can only tolerate granny Smith because they have something resembling flavor

Bad-tasting apples are easier to mass-produce and contain more volume because "muh bigger is better".

Apples are a monoculture tho, I wouldn't worry about it. Just wait for the next plague to wipe out all the shit-tasting apples and let the sweeter, natural apples proliferate

I've always hated apples. I only had the store-bought as a kid and they were a gross chore to eat.

Oh God, I'm not the only one that noticed.

I'd eat the fuckers obsessively as a kid, now I'm put off by the sight of them. They're always too grainy or too tart.

I blame disease/drought resistance being desired (and therefore not selecting taste/texture as carefully) over just spraying the damn crops.

Not happening. Mass production of apples is done through grafting onto root stock (because they don't breed true), which can be a whole shit ton of different things (including other Malus) and are usually chosen for local hardiness/disease resistance. With the apple tree bits separated from the ground by the root stock many diseases aren't much of an issue. Also, "natural apples" are usually more sour, less sweet, and extremely variable in quality.

I noticed this happened like years ago with navel oranges. Some time around like 2017 or so everything the stores carried seemed to be blighted or damaged. They're also more sour now and have almost no pith. I haven't had a good one since then, can't help but feel it was a bad omen.
