Why did Willi Herold do it?

Willi at the age of 19, impersonated a decorated luftwaffe captain then proceeded to arrange the execution's of at least one hundred petty thieves and deserters (while stating that he was directly ordered by Adolf Hitler to assess the situation at the front) until he was tried by The Reich for his crimes and let go. Then he was caught by The British for stealing a loaf of bread and they hanged him.

I still don't know why he did it. Was he just trolling?
