Didn't christians consider money lending (with interest) to be sinful?
The church considered it sinful, but do you seriously think no Christians engaged in it? The Medici and Fugger families* were both Catholic and engaged heavily in banking and lending. The Genoese Casa di San Giorgio was established by Catholics to support a Catholic republic in the 15th century. The Grimaldi family still rules over Monaco. Only the poor had to adhere to church dogma.

*Edit: Interestingly, the Medici family extended their services to the Papacy while the Fuggers supported mainly the Habsburg monarchy in Iberia, HRE and Eastern Europe. Again, theology has very little to do with practice and the Pope may condemn lending while simultaneously supporting the illustrious banking families of Italy and Germany.
