Sonic, but that's because Sega killed Knuckles's push back in the early 2000's after the whole "no kike" incident.

Knuckles had the crowd in his palm, was a good worker, a great foil for Sonic's exhausting baby face run, and he had the look, too. Sega could've made him a star, but they fumbled the ball hard.

Ken Penders is trying to salvage whatever he can from that mess, but the guy can't book for shit. The way i see it, the Knuckles experiment is over. His time has passed. He is never getting the belt. He's never getting a top spot. They're trying to push Shadow instead, and that guy is fucking dimes.

Knuckles is worse, but only because of the reasons a lot of side characters are worse, too much focus on the main protag and not enough given to side characters. You see it in a lot of franchises, but it might be worse in Sonic because different writers want different things for the same character so the few things side characters there do get doesn't even build a consistent character.
