I think you’re underestimating a few factors:

1) The psychological impact of getting shot at. If it makes the shooter take cover, he’s not shooting civilians. If he get shot back at in the first place, it shatters the illusion of power. It’s not uncommon for spree killers to crumple when faced with any resistance, often turning their guns on themselves.

2) Let’s assume that he’s read a ballistics manual and is psychotic enough to stand in the line of fire. Helmets and plates are not impervious. If someone’s shooting back and is reasonably competent, they can wound or disable. The purpose of ballistic armor is to help you survive a hit, but there’s a spectrum of other results that leave you alive but unable to continue the firefight.

3) Particular to this case is the issue of volume of fire. Let’s say Wilson’s first few shots draw the shooter’s attention but don’t compromise his armor system. I’m betting at least one of the other half dozen motherfuckers drawing while the first guy engages will either get lucky or close the distance. This is even more likely if the shooter has to take cover. There’s a reason why militaries have been using evolutions of fire and move tactics since the end of World War I; it fucking works, even against people with cover or protection. The caveat here is that most spree killings occur where there’s not an armed civilian on the scene, so one where there are multiple is definitely an outlier. That said, even if Wilson was the only armed person there, him forcing the shooter into cover is going to buy time for civilians to either escape or engage by other means.

Armor is not a force field, and having even one person shooting back against a single aggressor can make all the difference by buying time for others to act.

Just ask a fully armored SWAT officer if he’d be willing to stand there and take pistol hits. Now ask him if he’d do it alone, knowing that there could be more than one dude firing on him at once.

Putting my money on meth psychosis logic but there won't be a way to prove it, a tweaker wouldn't leave a manifesto. I'd be very interested in the postmortem toxicology report.

Nomadic schizo, without a doubt. Dude knows the Southwest better than a outlaw with a bounty in the thousands, and only a man with severe brain damage would try shooting up a church in a place called White Settlement.

Shit like this reminds me of when someone shotgunned the wire insulators off poles at a relay/transformer station in December 2011, between Flint & Saginaw. Power was out for a big chunk of Genesee County, including Birch Run, for several days. I don't think anyone was ever caught for that.

Schizo now that I have some info and an appearance. He was arrested before for wandering around with a shotgun at a gas station, maybe he had a grievance with someone there as well/the community.

I wonder if this is some autistic attempt by an atheist incel to take revenge for the Christchurch shooting, there are some odd coincidences.

The shooting took place in a place called "White Settlement" in Tarrant County, which shares it's name with the perpetrator of the Christchurch shooting: Brenton Tarrant, who is known as a white supremacist. His shooting took place in Christchurch, New Zealand, and this one takes place in a Church of Christ, which is another odd naming coincidence.
