An anime that isn't SEL because frankly? That's cheating.

Here are a few nice options:
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid
Natsunagu
Shounen Hollywood

I especially like the evening shot with the red sky. In this OVA they're both key to every day life, but also a symbol of a world where our demand for power has has terrible consequences.I really like just the gritty look of this scene. You can imagine it being a cold day and the power lines are the difference between being warm, cold, and being in the dark. It's very juxtaposed to the show itself. The dream like aesthetic of these are very nice. It reminds me of a pleasant walk through the city with possibly a slight buzzing overhead, drown out by cars and people.Same reasoning for Dragon Maid, but even more-so.

What the fuck, why are there so many anime power lines? What do they thematically symbolize to the Japaneses that they feel compelled to include them? Connection/interconnectedness? Crosses?

You can't just write off SEL. It is the greatest anime of all and Null's personal favorite.

Very thematic visuals considering the subject-matter.
I came in here to say this. SEL IS the anime with the most power lines because wires and cables are a visual theme throughout, this was deliberately done, so I can't imagine another anime would have more. I haven't seen SEL in over 15 years though so I can't remember if it's really any good and I assume you're joking about null liking it. Anime has generally gotten insufferable as time has gone on because of the weebs and dorky chibi shit.

SEL got pretty deep into it. Chiaki J. Konaka (guy who wrote it) basically predicted a lot of what the Internet would eventually become.
