Nocturne is generally the best one to start with. Shin Megami Tensei 4 and Apocalypse are also good. If you want strategy, Devil Survivor. If you want a standard JRPG that's still really weird, Digital Devil Saga. SMT5 is too balanced around the leveling DLCs to recommend. Good game if you can tolerate that.

Strange Journey is really good, but really old school.

Word, the one I played was Devil Survivor but I'll maybe look into the other ones mentioned.
