I live on Bouvet Island, a Norwegian island in the South Atlantic Ocean just south of 54°. Over a thousand miles from the coast of Antarctica, over a thousand from the South Sandwich Islands, and sixteen hundred miles south by southwest of the coast of South Africa, it is the most remote island in the entire world. (Yes, Norwegian healthcare, but the nearest doctor is, as I've said, over a thousand miles away in another country, so it's a wash.)

My homeland is nineteen square miles, over ninety percent of it glacial. It features a nature preserve, an inactive volcano, and a weather station.

Though a Norwegian possession it was named after Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier, a French explorer, who first sighted the land, but did not disembark, on January 1, 1739; it was, however, several decades until the land was spotted again, or even landed on, with several islands mistakenly claimed to lie nearby.
