"You murdered 4 people so we'll set your bail at 1 million. What's the worst that can happen if you or someone else pays it?"

For one, it’s cheaper to let somebody roam the streets after posting collateral than it is to keep them in jail awaiting trial.

In a broader sense it also recognizes the fact that people are innocent until proven guilty, so only in cases where the crime is really egregious or the person is deemed a flight risk/threat is bond denied.

For minor offenses, it's just an OR bond which is nothing more than a promise to show up for your court dates.

Having watched the courts in my locale for years, I have learned bail is also notable when accounting time served.

When someone is held without bail, the time they serve does not appear to account towards their sentence for some technical reason. As a result, local judges often set bail nominally at $25 or thereabouts for indigent people (or, oppositely maintain high bail, pending a bail review hearing, for scumbags).

it's an elaborate excuse to keep bounty hunters around since those sound badass
apparently the boba fett show wasn't that good though which is probably why people have been talking about reform lately
