I don't blame you for being ignorant, but he was not fine when Bob died. It fucked him up quite a bit for a little while.

What?

1. Chris was properly upset when Bob died.
2. He always seemed to get along better with Barb than Bob.
3. He's not just going to go be a sex slave. He'll just stay on the tugboat, find a place to live, and keep on muddling through life as an awkward, gullible weirdo.
 
I feel really bad for Barb and Bob, personally. They looked so happy in the past, and having a child with such demanding special needs clearly took a really big toll on them both. They certainly weren't angels, and made a lot of questionable decisions in raising him, but there is a strong sense they were honestly just trying to do what they thought was right (especially in regards to mainstreaming - no doubt that was a bit of denial on their part of how bad he was, too).
 
Isn't Barb one of the main reasons why the house looks like shit? Didn't she threaten Chris when he tried to clean it up?

I believe she's the one with the hoarder tendencies, I can't see her being against the house getting cleaner, but she might not want Chris "messing" with her stuff, or something along those lines. Which would definitely impede any cleaning attempts.

We have all seen pictures of CWCs room, it screams hoarder to me.
Seriously he refuses to part with his melted lego stuff, i think the megan shrine is still intact and his DLC buying habits for games he doesnt own seems pretty odd.
Its worth noting that hoarders are able to see other hoarders as having a problem whilst not admitting they have a problem but the thought process sort of goes
"damn I wish mama would get rid of her horde, it would leave so much room for all the stuff I have that's totally important and worth keeping"

That's very true, he's likely learned the habits from his parents (Barb's hoarding and Bob's likely acceptance of it) and sees it as normal. Once your parents have hammered into you the importance of keeping everything in case it's useful one day, blah blah, that's probably ingrained - especially for someone with Chris' level of obsession. And the fire making them lose a lot of stuff has probably triggered Chris to be very protective of his belongings also.

All that combined with the fact Chris has a massive problem letting go off anything from the past (galpals, schoolwork, old grudges, broken sex toys) just basically adds up to chris having no chance at all.
I think Bobs little green house thing was his escape from the horde and all Charbs bullshit.

I wouldn't call Chris a hoarder. Or at least not more than a very mild case. If you look at the house tour and compare it to his room, there is no comparison. His room has some level of organization and he keeps things that he is interested in, not random crap. He doesn't seem to need a lot of extra space beyond his bedroom for his toys and stuff. Maybe if he had a larger area just for himself, he would spread what he had out, but I don't think he would fill it up like Barb does. Because he doesn't fill his room up like Barb does.

The melted lego may be more of a case of him loving lego and not being able to afford to replace all of it, so his standard of "this piece is still ok" is pretty low.

I think the best way to explain Chris' room is this. He has the interests of an 8-12 year old child. He has had those interests for 20+ years. So instead of having 5 years to accumulate toys and games before losing interest like most kids do, he has had decades.

I would say that, if anything, the hoard has a negative effect on the state of Chris space. It is easy for him to dismiss the idea of de-cluttering his space a little, because the rest of the house is so much worse. Why should he put effort into making the cleanest room in the house a little cleaner?

*This applies to classic video Chris. My impression is that things remained the same for him. His room in the rental videos didn't look hoarded, and I imagine that carries over to the post-fire house. What I don't quite know is how hoarded up Barb's space in the p0st-fire house is.

Not gonna argue with that but there's degrees of hoarding.
The stuff we see on TV (huge piles of stuff, rotten food, dead pets, rats, ETC ETC) is the worst case hoarding because frankly its great TV.
At its very most basic hoarding is an inability to get rid of things due to emotional attachment you place on it.
Just because Chris keeps all his stuff mostly organised doesn't make him any less of a hoarder.

Eh, I don't think it's really worth talking about hoarding until you hit clinical hoarding. There's a distinction to be made between having a pathological need to keep random stuff around and just having emotional attachments to things. I wouldn't call it hoarding until it significantly disrupts your ability to function. Until then, it's just being messy to me.

Chris is a kid with a messy room. He's got a lot of toys. But his choice of toys is pretty limited and specific.

Barb, on the other hand, has serious mental issues.

Yeah, he just likes toys and games. He keeps them around as comforts and in case he might want to play with them in the future.

I don't know much about the clinical definitions of hoarding or whatever mental diagnoses are related to it. Maybe Chris has some mild form of it. But who cares? It doesn't seriously affect his ability to use his space. It doesn't present a health danger. It doesn't put stress on the structure of the house. It doesn't present a fire hazard.

So the question is, is his tendency to have a bunch of toys around him a symptom of some mental disorder? Maybe, but if it is, it's at a low enough level that most people probably have 4 or 5 disorders. And Chris has dozens.
