It's not that Barb doesn't care about Chris, it's that she thinks only about the immediate future. See: taking out retarded loans in his name.
I'm not certain I agree with this completely. Some of the remarks I make about Barb are made in a lighthearted and joking manner, but I seriously believe that she's got some serious mental issues and I believe that she's the one that fucked Chris up and made him the mess that he is today. (Bob wasn't totally innocent in this, but he didn't play as much of an active role in fucking Chris up; he was guilty by virtue of his failure to intervene when Barb was fucking things up.)
Based on Barb's actions (which is the only thing I have that's even close to any kind of empirical evidence) I believe that she views Chris as some sort of lackey or servant. Her relationship with him, IMO, is based more on desperation/co-dependence and pure laziness rather than actual love.
If Barb believes that her actions are that of a loving mother, then it's a pernicious, toxic kind of love (which is why I love to throw out those Pink Floyd - The Wall References).
For Chris's sake, the sooner Barb dies, the better; at his age, he still has a shot at turning his life around. The longer Barb hangs around, and the older Chris gets, the more those odds go against him.
Typo. My bad. Didn't proof read before posting.
Say what you like about Chris but he takes death hard. Barb's a massive enabler and has made herself a hige part of his adult life it would take him ages to get over it.
That depends. If Chris continues to improve his social skills and manages to make some genuine friends (Anna doesn't count) then maybe he won't take Barb's death as hard as he otherwise would. Having a support network, even simply having someone you can talk to, can be an immense help.
Chris also isn't as isolated as he used to be. He gets out and socializes on weekends. The old Chris would be completely devastated by Barb's passing, the new (and hopefully evolving) Chris, stands a much better chance of surviving the experience.
I also believe that a lot of us here, despite some of the less than kind / often critical things we say about Chris, would be genuinely supportive and would be willing to lend a sympathetic ear (of course this would be dependent on Chris getting over his troll thing).
