I know this a bit spergy, but my guess as to why older memes hold up better is they tend to be connected to some funny IRL thing, they aren't subtle or blatant advertising and they haven't been subverted by degenerates. That and they tended to be clever in-jokes within a smaller group of people (compared to the wider Internet today).
