I have basically heard nothing about esports in the mainstream for over a year. What happened to tournaments getting broadcasted on ESPN and stuff? Is viewership diminishing? Did a commercial venture fail? Was a scam uncovered? Is everything fine and I’m just a retard?

The muttification of genres has turned everything into mobas and hero shooters and normies like me don't fucking care about that bullshit. Bring back CS and melee and I'll watch it maybe.

They can't swear or throw a fit because of sponsors so that's a huge loss in entertainment value right there. Pretty hard to sell 10 dudes sitting on expensive chair, mashing their keyboards to a wide audience that doesn't know the ins & outs ot the game and keep it entertaining for long.
I’m just a retard?
Do you really want to ask this question on Q&A?

The bubble broke. All the VC bros realized it was fucking retarded and bailed. It turns out that no one actually likes attending the events in person and online viewers don't turn into customers. It also doesn't help that the most popular "esports" that have the best viewing experience (CS, Dota, League) have fallen off somewhat, less so with CS but still.

Dota and league are dogshit to watch if you don't already play dota or league. Same goes for hero shooters. CS is god tier because you can show it to anybody and they instantly intuitively understand what's going on. Nobody wants to memorize 20+ characters and their specific little bullshits just to understand what they're even looking at. Even fighting games struggle with this, which is why smash is an outlier since at the end of the day it's just sumo wrestling.

Were any of the FGs actually considered serious commercial ventures for esports though? When I think of commercial esports it was CS, some moba shit I never cared about, Star Craft, OW (but that was more or less astroturfed bullshit), etc. Stuff like Smash and Crapcom was 90% grassroots.

What about Koreans, do they still obsessively play Starcraft as their national sport?
It’s not even close to the level it used to be, but it is still around. There’s no more Proleague, no pro houses, and they aren’t filling up huge stadiums anymore, but SC:BW is still very popular. The top tournament (ASL) runs a few times a year, and big streamers hold other events and show matches.

The game never fully recovered from a big matchfixing scandal (a few guys even went to jail for it), bullshit between Blizzard and the Korean esports players association, and the launch of SC2. SC2 was bigger outside of KR than it was in KR.
