Imagine having optimism in a time where people on this site and others demand all western animators and localizers be fired and replaced with AI just so they can have petty schadenfreude against their social justice shilling.

No offense to the farms, but this place rewards cynicism. Not a criticism, just a thing you have to expect when the main appeal of the site is dunking on lolcows. You just have to let it roll over you.

God what I wouldn't give for hand drawn films again.

It doesn't even have to be full blown eye sex like Prince of Egypt, just seeing effort put into 2d on the big screen would be enough.

unless you're like, Neil Nadleman or some hot shit, EVERY localizer is a mongoloid who could be replaced by AIs trained on HK crabsticks and SEAglish dubs and it would be barely noticed

Hopefully PoE gets its turn.
Honestly this would be my real kick in the ass to watch it, getting to experience it in the theater. That's how I ended up watching Back to the Future, my parents saw it was one of the Tuesday Night Classics and decided to take the family even though we owned it on DVD.

Dude, if Prince of Egypt were ever re-released in theaters I would die a happy man

we had our chance with looney tunes "the day the earth blew up" but it barely made back its budget because people just want more slop that tries to be roger rabbit without understanding what made roger rabbit so wonderful. speaking of which, they're releasing one of those movies this year with "COYOTE VS ACME" and it has five times the budget of the day the earth blew up
Localizers blow.

Just translate it accurately and trust your audience to put 2 and 2 together without you having to shoehorn in fucking Among Us and manspreading references.
i've fucking had it with localizers after suffering two decades of their bullshit. i thought one piece was lame for most of my life because i only saw the 4kids version until like 2013. i hate playing dragon quest because everyone speaks like retards and the asshole that leads the translation team thinks he's so witty writing so many stupid writing quirks into the game. whoa, look, the people living in this japanese-ish region all speak in haiku, the mermaids speak in rhymes, everyone the viking village speaks in super ESL isn't that so charming? NO! FUCK YOU! those are just obvious examples of translators fucking with their translations, there's a lot of changes they make that fly under the radar because they aren't so obviously incorrect. but oh that's not cultural appropriation, they're just taking someone else's culture and making it 1:1 with ours! don't you see? that makes it ok to completely screw up entire character-defining or even series-defining lines!

Not just animation.
「メリークリスマス!」
“Happy Holidays!”

Edit: someone put all of the Robotomy episodes together.

Saw that three times in my childhood at cinemas.

When I was younger I thought the Ghost Stories dub was hilarious. Nowadays I’m realizing that it might have been a net negative for localizations as a whole.
as funny as it is to hear yukari from persona 3 say "stupid faggot little cocksucker" i can't pretend that the dub wasn't just what translators want to do with everything they translate. i guess when your company is a few years off from exploding you don't really need to give a fuck about any sense of professionalism. either you're too big to fail or you're failing so who gives a shit

Dunking on lolcows and cynicism itself aren't really the same thing, in my opinion. Cynicism is when you look at the bigger picture, outside of viewing specific individuals/groups under a microscope, and chant "Everything sucks now! Everything was better in the 80s/90s/2000s" for 20 years.

And it's not even that funny either.

Had the Ghost Stories dub stayed as close to a 1:1 translation, would the series even have been remembered in the West at all? The content of the show makes it more towards Japanese audiences, and I don't know how well received the show was there.

90s and 2000s Hentai dubs were also guilty of doing the same thing with improvising dialog, but how remembered are those, aside from the standout ones like Bible Black's infamous English dub?

The show was very popular in Japan, the story about it being a ratings flop and critically panned is an outright lie. And the manga it's based on was a best seller back in its day.

No, it probably wouldn't have. But I think that's fine tbh. Part of enjoying foreign media is enjoying its foreign aspects and I think the onus is on the audience to either laugh at the goofy foreign elements for being weird and foreign, dislike the foreign elements for being weird and foreign, or learn about and appreciate the foreign elements for being weird and foreign. I think it's wrong to change something like that around on the vague notion that it won't appeal due to being foreign, instead allow those who appreciate it for whatever reason to appreciate it for what it genuinely is.
The one time localization actually improved a product:
And even then that script had already been half written by westerners anyways.
