Pretty much. The US is the only major nation that would put up with their bullshit. Americans are still pretty inherently intolerant against LBGTs. Don't believe me? A textbook from a class I took last semester ranked LGBT acceptance throughout the world. Sweden of course is near the top, with over 90% accepting gays, while Muslim countries were near the bottom. The US is more or less in the middle, it is not exactly an even split between acceptance and intolerance, but still, I wouldn't say we Americans are inherently against gays.

The US shouldn't be proud of being on the middle in a list like that. As a first world nation you should be ashamed of being anywhere but at or near the top. I was trying to point out that while a lot of people are against homosexuality in the US, it isn't a majority opinion. Read my quote again, I was rebutting Xanatos's point that we're inherently against gays.

According to the article, about 3 billion people in the world, or 43% of the population, are against homosexuality on religious grounds. I'm sure most people in the US who are against homosexuality are against it on religious grounds, which is their right.

Actually its far worse than a mere cult. The entire church was built by Fred Phelps senior as the ultimate example of a self important, self worshipping, spiteful, sociopathic ego trip where he could play god in a surrounding of obedient little slaves he could kick the shit out of at will.

Freddy was already particularly unpleasant shit back in his early days before founding his church with a reputation as a violent fundamentalist, who used religion as tool to attack, control, or bully people in his way, yet who (initially) had enough charm to blend in with those around him. Sadly he had gotten himself a wife and started procreating which allowed him to produce victims who could never escape his control.

He first made a name for himself as a monsterous cunt in the 50s when he started preaching in Topeka Kansas the gospel of female hatred in such a violently hateful manner as to shock even 50s christian fundamentalist kansas (though the loveshys would likely agree), and once it became clear he was a violent and sadistic psycho they promptly abandoned his sermons. After this he moved his family into his church which pretty much became his personal fortress.

Now cut off entirely from the rest of the world and growing ever more violent and sadistic due to drugs, fundamentalism, and the sheer revelry of violently dominating the lives and minds of his kids and wife, he spent the 50s, 60s, and early 70s engaging in every act of cruelty against them short of sexual abuse (that we know... there is a rather disturbing ambiguity in the text as to his actions towards his daughters, and a bit about his "favourite" daughter Kathy that freaked me out) and seemingly made it his mission to make them suffer and break their minds.

Hell his biography at this point pretty much reads like a mix of a horror story and multiple psychopathy checklists. It was only when his eldest daughter flat out pulled a knife on him and threatened to kill him if he ever hurt her mom again that he was revealed to be as cowardly as he was cruel and was then forced to direct his anger and cruelty onto the outside world via the legal profession.

Now unable to physically torture his kids or wife, he decided he would get his jollies from using the legal system to punish the outside world in any way he could, as well as to satisfy his sense of entitlement and greed. At this point he had already made his name as a psychotically litigous and vindictive lawyer who used his used his profession to try and ruin everyone who had ever irritated him before, or who angered or opposed him in any way in the present, and used his claimed "support" of the civil rights movement to try and shield himself from criticism, but only jumped on that bandwagon once he saw the profit that lay in civil rights lawsuits.

However, in the late 70s after years of unprofessionalism that would make Jack Thompson call bullshit and start throwing punches, he was finally chased out of the mainstream legal industry and into the realm of private "nuisance" lawsuits intended to bully and harass people into settling (when he actually got to court he was almost always humiliatingly defeated which also fed his fury) but was eventually investigated and disbarred for several years when it became apparant he was too bad and too scummy a lawyer even for this field.

This pretty much drove the already violently insane freddy into such a rage against the system that had opposed him, for 6 years from 1983-89 he lauched hundreds of frivilous and insanely vindictive yet hopeless lawsuits at literally everyone and anyone from ronald reagan to distant public schoolteachers, but by that point he had managed to bully half his kids through law school to reinforce him in his crusade against everything and anyone, but he had become so insanely immoral and stupid at this point he simply got his entire family disbarred for several years, and himself disbarred permanently.

Now without any physical or legal outlet for his cruelty and desperate need to bully, humilate, and hurt people, he once again turned his kids (and later grandkids) into his weapons of revenge as well as props for his bloated ego. since financially ruining his enemies was out the picture, the worst thing he could think to do to punish the outside world was to attack people at their most emotionally distraught and vulnerable by attacking and harassing funerals.

His protests in the early 90s attracted national, and later worldwide attention as he attacked the funerals of well known people like celebrities or famous murder victims, and outpourings of outrage and fury were always plentiful wherever he went. This finally provided him with what he had always looked for. An easy, risk free way of making people suffer and getting the attention he thought he deserved. Those of his kids who had not escaped were by then too broken and brainwashed to do anything but support him, and raise their own kids and later grandkids to do the same.

And that brings us to now. Due to 20 years of such protests sapping public interest, the WBC has degenerated into a tired joke who only get attention when they get humiliated by Anonymous, which causes it's members to be ever more frantic in trying to offend. The only question is what will happen once freddy finally dies, and whether his cult will die or continue without him

What is sadly certain, is that he will not suffer a fraction of the pure screaming agony he deserves before he goes to hell.

It's not really fair to say they're antisemitic or homophobic.

They are biblical literalists. They read the bible exactly as it is. When you talk to Christian Apologists about the versus the WBC quote, they say "that's old testament and we don't have to do that anymore because Jesus died for our sins". WBC says "yes, we should be stoning homosexuals to death."

The idea isn't that they hate specific groups of people, it's that they hate everyone not exactly like themselves.

Typically they sue the state for violations of first ammendmant rights and the right to peaceful protest. Since it's usually open-and-shut (Phelps protests funeral, Phelps gets punched in the face, Phelps can no longer protest peacefuly), they get a ton of money from the state.

It does, however, blow up in their faces sometimes. Shirley almost lost her kids when she burned a flag near them. Child services and police were called out, lulz ensued.

"Get in touch with the locals. Perhaps there is a counter-protest you can take part in. I'm not the provocative type, but I'd love to take part in one of those counter-protests. When they try to come marching in, form a barrier, tell those pricks you're not gonna take it, and unleash a torrent of insults at them. They'll walk away if they know what's best for them. They never get physical because they have some sort of appearance they want to keep of being superior to everyone who opposes them, so chances are they won't try to force themselves in. Be sure to call them terrorists and freedom haters while you're at it because that's what they are."

A very simple, calm procedure. Remember, if you don't insult them, they'll insult you and your family. If anything, do it to shut them up. It doesn't have to be wretched, vile slander coming from the bottom of your hate filled heart or anything (unless you want it to be). Hell, just stand there and yell, "I disagree," if you want. So far, cutting off access and telling them, "no," is the most effective way of getting them to go away.
