there are browser plugins to get around that

I have that plugin. It doesn't convert automatically, it adds an extra "Save as png" option. If you chose the normal save option and only then noticed the webp, you have the webp and will need to again right-click and pick "save as png" now (nowhere near the regular save).

And it's slow sometimes and hangs for a good minute.

webm and webp are detestable, the amount of conversions you have to do to make them work with very average software... I hate them so much. I had to strip the audio of a webm because converting it to MP4 (so I can load it into my video software) kept turning the audio into loud pitched screeches. Something that should have taken 2 minutes ended up taking 20. It's so horrible.
It would have been easier to just record the fucking thing in VLC with OBS, that's how retarded it was.

I'm fine with smaller formats but the compatibility with normal programs is just so bad. I still haven't found an easy way to get transparent background webps to work.

I have found that webp and webm support are either excellent in the software I use (mostly open-source autism) or they are so non-existent that I have found the correct open-source autism long ago to provide the conversion needed.
