The pre painted terrain bummed me out at first, it felt like another blow to the hobby. Being able to buy terrain that's better than what 90% of people could make on their own sounds discouraging.

The reality is though Most people have been painting on naked MDF L shapes for years now. Events are a sea of MDF. This is actually a good step forward for the narrative side of the game. I'm liking the sounds of this edition so far.

Finally got back on the Peter train.

I wish GW would give him more work. He's one of the few BL authors whose books I always enjoy, leaving aside some little nitpicky stuff. Abnett used to be up there for me until I read Legion
and he went apeshit on the purple prose in End and the Death. Now it's basically just Fehervari, Chris Wraight, and Mike Brooks (I quite like his writing, but I wish he'd stop soapboxing).

Legion works as a novel on it's own, but is unfortunately part of the weird period of HH novels where after the success of the first five they just wanted more, but unconnected to a central narrative, HH stuff. Similar to how Battle for the Abyss (admittedly a much worse book) got greenlit.

Abnett needs a fucking editor though, zero reason for Hive to be two whole novels. He's on that GRRM 'shut the fuck up and get on with it'

Fehervari is a good writer but seems to only want to dabble in 40k when they let him do some weird fuck Coil stuff in his own little non-Warhammer Horror horror corner.

I wish they'd bring Tchaikovsky back for another novel, but since thay guy is a real actual author writing his own real actual series that apparently sell well, he might not be interested.

Seems like this video was supposed to release later, probably for an event alongside other annoucements, All the comments are honing in on the new ork bike models that they don't even make mention of in the video.

GW saw the leaks, so they addressed the leaks with more leaks.
GW has concept art for Imperial Dog models. Basically kind of like a dog handle unit for Imperial Guard. I want them. To actually release those models, those would be super cool. Every faction should get. Animal units. An animal handlers.
Stop watching these slop loy tubas and. Watch the Chad autistic guy with his spreadsheets talking about logistics.

I'm constantly tickled that almost every time I see Legion mentioned, one of my top 5 WH books, it's someone saying how much they hate it :story:

That's for the best, his style is too unique to waste with bolter porn or other mindless action. He writes psychological stories, let him do it.

Huh, surprised that the Guard got over twice the releases of Marines novel wise.

I got so annoyed with the beginning chapters of Legion, that I had to google how retarded Dan Abnettt is. Luckily I found enough people agreeing how he loves to sniff his own farts, because damn that was a pretentious and badly writte slog until the story picked up. It reads like a teenagers first tey of creating a fantasy world, which just consists of shitting made up words on a paper.

Ignoring of course the implementation of Perpetuals, which is an incredibly stupid concept.

Just finished listening to Above and Beyond. Its the second Lucille Von Shard novel and her 5th story overall. Pretty solid second book. Von Shard herself would have been a heckin wholesome girlboss if handled by anyone else, but Denny Flowers makes sure every person in the novel either fucking hates her or barely tolerates her, including herself. Its like if Rey was played ironically and actually she's just a retarded fuckup and everyone knows and calls her that to her face.

The introspection by the main character is also interesting. It seems a close approximation of what "real artists" think of slopchurning hacks, that is, if you follow it straight its a condemnation of your average shlomo spitting out retarded shit, but if you pay a little more attention I think its calling both "real artists" and "hacks" fucking idiots. Its also got some interesting Xenos stuff, and some cool dogfighting. Not nearly as good as Double Eagle but if you're into the IG plane shit it's solid.

Also Philip Sacramento is a killer VA

Sometimes I think Abnett's novels are paced on his contract terms for it, paid per x word and if x reaches threshold y, he's then got to do additional promotional events he can't be arsed with so does the following:

fill the first 3/4's of the novel with world building, character backgrounds, several threads of different plot PoV's, secondary stories with enough little nods and references for rest of 40k- mainly something else he written-to give a sense there's another bigger thing going on that this story will somehow resolve you notice it's page 434 and there's only 476 pages total in the book, with an epilogue and author after word...so really rushed finish that sort of devalues the whole book, like "was that it?".

The whole canon/non canon thing comes down to how each individual accepts the in-lore explanation for some changes from previous editions but regardless where you land on that line, think everyone agrees that when GW force dumb shit, it's pretty much ignored or dismissed by community and after bit of time will be mocked or diminished in by characters in later works.

Edit: clarity

Dan has this habit, for some reason of unnecessarily describing. Gruesome deaths of members of the first, and only for some reason. I think he has a weird dismemberment fetish.
Also, just say war machines, not woe machines. Makes you sound like a fucking retard, Dan.

He’s arguably THE 40k writer but realistically he doesn’t care about lore consistency unless it’s his own. If he was vocal on social media like other authors he’ll be hated but he has Eisenhorn and Gaunts Ghosts to defend him

In my warhammer? The nerve.
I was a SW fan before in my youth (before the dark times). But even in the nerdist parts of the EU I have nothing encountered anything like Abnett's writing in the opening chapters of Legion.

If there is a thin line to cross (between creating a sci-fi world with existing and to us unknown vocabulary/concepts and staying readable and enjoyable) Abnett drove fullspeed across into the sunset and never looked back.

Well, it got a bit better afterwards, but also far from enjoyable to me.

Yeah, once Legion actually starts being about the Alpha Legion, I quite liked it, but everything with the regiment of manly older men led by slutty teenage psyker girls made me feel like I was getting a look into parts of Abnett's psyche I didn't need or want to see.

Guess they saw how well the Battlemutt went down for the Abhuman KT. In fact, I like the Battlemutt so much I kitbashed one out of an old dog model I found in my bits with a bit of spare Cadian gear.

Crossposting from the Total War thread.

The annual Skulls event is happening on the 21st of May. Maybe some new game announcements and probably DLC for some older games.

I have many grievances against Dan Abnett, mostly for his work on the Horus Heresy.

Abnett added Remembrancers, who are journalists sent to document the glory of the Great Crusade. Nobody asked for journalists in 40k. I get that he wanted a human perspective but journalists? Seriously? I am here to read about muscular super soldiers conquering the galaxy and sodomizing aliens, not about journalists in space. Fuck journalists, TJD.

I like the Interex as a concept, cyber mechanical centaurs coexisting with xenos and having advanced tech better than the Imperium. But they are retards. They are supposed to be super against Chaos, and they were suspicious that Horus was corrupted by Chaos. So why did they literally take him to a museum where a super dangerous Chaos artifact was being stored? Wouldn't Horus try to steal it immediately if he was corrupted? And why the fuck was it sitting around in a museum in the first place for everyone to see? It should either be locked down somewhere secure or destroyed. Retards.

In Legion Abnett makes Alpharius fall in the dumbest way possible through the Cabal. He was given two choices, either stay loyal and have ten thousand years of stagnation, or go traitor and wipe out humanity and Chaos, allowing xenos to live peacefully after. Why would Alpharius trust the word of a bunch of random aliens he just met last Tuesday? And why on Earth would he prioritize the lives of xenos over humanity? Who's to say they aren't lying and just wanted humanity to fall and go extinct, because they are evil scheming aliens, and Alpharius joining Horus would accelerate it? Overall really stupid motivation for joining Horus.

The Perpetuals are all boring background characters that replaced the much cooler Sensei, and they do not fit into the plot of the Heresy at all. They completely disjoint any book they are part of, the main plot has to come to a screeching halt so we can focus on what these assholes are doing, which is often completely uninteresting. They don't really have a role other than to be Abnett's band of OCs. John Grammaticus is the worst offender, awful character meant to be the main character of the Heresy (Abnett's self insert) but ended up as the annoying Jar Jar Binks of 40k. And why did that Damian Brytannis guy kill MLK? Completely random fact that came out of nowhere in one book. Why mention that? Why did we need to know that information?

The Emperor now has a partner, Erda, whose DNA was combined with the Emperor's DNA to create the Primarchs. Sounds like a decent idea. You need a mother to have children. But now the lore has been retconned so she threw the Primarchs out into the Warp, not the Chaos gods. Because apparently she didn't want them to be generals and warriors? What? What else were they going to be? Gardeners? So according to modern lore, a woman ruined everything in 40k because she got irrational and out of control. Real feminist of you Abnett.

Dan revealed the Emperor's real name, we now know it is Neoth. Why reveal it? The Emperor should be mysterious, we shouldn't know his real name. It ruins the mystery.

Apparently Horus wanted to have a new Mournival with the Emperor, Rogal, Valdor and Sanguinius. He also wanted to create new Primarchs, and female ones too. Why? Why would Horus of all people want female representation in the Primarchs? "Father, the Primarchs have too many males. You are reinforcing the patriarchy. We must uphold equal gender representation. This is why I rebelled against you. The Imperium must go woke, father." Really nigga? Horus' whole motivation was he wanted a galaxy ruled by strong Space Marines and Primarchs over weak mortals, let alone women.

He makes a bunch of weird additions to 40k that don't mesh well with the rest of the universe and feel like fanfiction.
I never read his inquisitor books, so I can't speak on them.
