Been playing with the Citadel Texture paints.

Astrogranite looks like poured cement.
Astrogranite Debris looks like asphalt.
Stirland Battlemire looks like nice thick mud.

I imagine there's an intended Citadel paint to touch up any mistakes on them (like, I think Astrogranite is Mech Standard Grey? Maybe?) but I don't know for sure.

The Deathwatch Terminator Captain I'm painting up right now is standing on two rocks, and shoving battlemire around the two rocks to the edge of the base worked REALLY well. I have some Army Painter Battlefield Field Grass (green and yellow) and some Woodland Tufts I'm gonna add, as well, once I'm sure I won't have any spots on the mud to touch up.

As an aside, painting with shifter paints by brush is a fucking nightmare. Definitely should have practiced more. They're basically heavy on the Gloss Varnish -- think they're literally flakes in varnish -- so if something goes wrong it goes really wrong really fast, and you cannot touch up any mistakes because they're pretty much 90% transparent. Nice enough effect, though. (Edit: I think the way to go is to treat them like gloss varnish. The absolute bare minimum amount needed to spread over the mini, absolutely no more. You're not looking for coverage like a normal paint, just to get the flake over the black undercoat.)

Think I'll use Black Templar to line/outline the power sword nodes, gundam panel line style, because I can't touch up the shifter paint around them.

Really thinking about an Airbrush, but I usually paint at night while on call, and noise is a concern. Plus, no airflow in this apartment.

Autistics keep saying that the xeno codex coming in January is a new xenos faction. Is there a reason why they would say this? I find it hard to believe that GW would introduce a new range near the start of 9th without any mention in the 9th core book. Has that ever happened before?

Didn't it call it a "New Xenos Codex" in one of the emails or blog posts about it? I kinda presumed it was awkwardly written, but who knows?

Edit: "while early next year we’ll see another xenos race rise up to put those Space Marines in their place."

The text-less covers are on the website, do they give any hints?

Top one is very obviously Dark Angels. What's the bottom one?

Probably dark eldar. It would make sense for space elves to get more active story wise when the silent king came back.

That artwork is the cool piece of art showing off unnamed xenos races. 1602776525040.jpg

Those are just generic images they use in the rule book for Imperium and Xenos.

Considering that there was an image of a Dark Eldar as one of the new models that GW are making, it is probably going to be them.

Looks like killteam is being updated, which is really fucking based tbh. Necron Flayed ones are the poster boys for this update.

Well there is a story in it (or maybe one of the Psychic Awakening, I don't remember) of a Mechanicus ship getting blown to bits by a Squat(gravitc weapons, thought to be extinct, "Squ-" being the hints) ship. Now, you say, Squats aren't Xeno. Well, Canon is what GW wants it to be, and 1st/2nd Squats didn't work out. Maybe GW has an idea for Space Dwarfs that isn't an off shoot of humanity. We have the old school squat in Necromuda as a tribute to the Homo Rotundus that never was, and we're getting something completely new to fill the trope.

As someone who wasn't against the idea of the Squats returning, I did want them to have a really good idea to make them feel different. I didn't think Imperium Squats would work, or old school trikes and artillery make them stand out.

As for what to do... fortifications and terrain are a big deal this Edition. A faction that likes to get in cover, and can make terrain on the field would be different. Slow, lots of firing with out line of site, and loves to take a point to sit on it and can make a bunker on it to make them a bitch to move off. Could be fun.

Can’t wait to pay £40 for some flayed one because gee dubs decided to put some data cards and punch out tokens with them.

I got distracted about hypothesising new xenos, I forgot what I initially was going to address, the idea of new Dark Eldar Codex. It seems to me that the Ynnari could use see fleshing out, and couple be a sideways method of giving all three current flavor of Eldar some goodies as well as fleshing out sorta the biggest thing to happen to the Eldar since the last time they made a god.

I remember reading somewhere about Ynnead resurrecting dead Eldar from soulstones into new wraithbone bodies, and I'd kinda like to see some Eldcrons.

Thank god. I was worried they were going to Specialist Games it. KT is probably the best thing to happen to 40k in a long time.

I think that GW could play around with the AoS summoning mechanic for the Ynnari. Every unit that dies in the game generates "Soul Points", perhaps 1 point per power level. Those points can be used to summon Ynnari units for the equivalent power level or to empower units.

Although the summoning could be abused, so perhaps those points could only summon a unit for a phase. Imagine popping up a unit with negative moral modifiers in the morale phase or getting an extra psyker for a phase.

Wanted to check my 3rd edition rulebook to make sure, but neither Tau nor Necrons were mentioned. Their codices came out years later than the rulebook though. Other than those, there haven't really been new xenos factions at all that didn't exist in lore or as sub-factions, like Harlequins and TS.
