I suspect its because corporations blindly hire people with Communications degrees and good ol fashioned Goon nepotism almost certainly played a role.

I swear, that last one is one of the single most common demarcations of later e-drama. I'm not sure whether it's because it just represents one of the bigger ideological echo-chambers, the fact that it's got such close ties to old centers of internet culture, or what, but it's kind of surreal how so many completely unrelated events have that as a common thread.

The fuck happened with Company of Heroes and Paradox?

Also, as far as "you can't escape their clutches because of institutional power" goes, I think that's oversimplifying the issue. It's bigger than that. If these fucking companies tried to maintain a level of neutrality and acted like businesses instead of becoming corporate political activists then these sorts of people would be irrelevant.

Someone said companies had to take a side in political shitflinging so they went with the dude that was the loudest assuming it was representative of the norm.

The mentality, and thank Christ for that. To the best of my knowledge, none of the WF Chat Mods are SA members. I don't think I could handle a few more trips down that particular rabbit hole. Instead, the main link all the WF chat mods have in common is that all of them seem to be Tumblr users, all are people appointed directly by either other chat mods or [DE]Danielle, and all directly from the Guides of the Lotus program, accomplishments notwithstanding. Which brings me to something I noticed earlier, that I'd like to share.

In Warframe, in order to unlock stuff, like reserve slots and better gear, you actually have to do what Warframe calls Mastery Rank tests. You can do one a day and they each impart a new rank once beaten. A few of the later tests (Rank 13 in particular) are trial-and-error nonsense that you can't do without knowing what to do beforehand, but for the most part they're pretty straightforward. Each test gives a number of benefits once passed, including unlocking new gear for use, giving you more reserve slots, and making it easier to level up new equipment. To boost Mastery Rank, you just need to level up equipment, then take the test when you've done it enough. That is literally all you need to do.

Now, there are work-arounds for Mastery Rank. For example, if you want to use a weapon that's way above your MR rating right now, you can still purchase it directly from the shop using Platinum, WF's premium currency. The interesting thing however is that Mastery Rank is a pretty good visual representation for how dedicated a player is, up until around Rank 14 or so, when the actual benefits of MR rankings become less tangible and are really solely there for bragging rights. I bring all this shit up, however, because if you look at the Mastery Ranks of the Warframe Chat Mods involved in this debacle, a pattern quickly emerges:

NervousTraschat - Silver Initiate (Rank 2)
Telluric - Silver Seeker (Rank 14)
Shadow - Initiate (Rank 1)
Bear - Juggerdaddy (Not an attainable rank)
Okami_Shiranui - Silver Initiate (Rank 2)
Server - Disciple (Rank 7)

Most of WF's chat mods have hundreds, if not thousands of hours of play according to their Steam profiles, but Telluric and maybe Bear aside, the overpowering majority of them are either at entry rank or a rank that your average newcomer could match in about a day of casual gameplay. This means they're specifically being put there in order to shit up region chat, and being put there above people who are actually playing the game. I'm not 100% on why DE keeps allowing this crap to happen, beyond the fact that [DE]Danielle is a Tumblrette and that the asshole behind the chatbot, [DE]Glen, is a borderline lolcow himself according to the subreddit.

Hah, now that's a good find. You would think that a company (of any size) would have some basic requirements for people they essentially hire to moderate a property, such as many many hours of experience, high levels of experience, and a clean track record.

The surreal part is that this is such an easy thing to pick up on. Any Warframer with even a passing grasp at understanding the game would quickly realize these people don't do anything but moderate region chat.

Which, really, is par the course, given that someone at DE thought making a player named FriendzoningMisandrist a chat mod was a good idea, and allowing a chat mod who heads up a clan called Decepticon Social Justice Division to remain in the face of overwhelming public outcry was also a good idea.

I would like to also note that if at first you don't succeed, you can try again the next day, AND there are enough wikis and walkthroughs floating around on the Net that if you can't figure out a good strat, someone else will be happy to show you how it's done.

I mildly disagree in that if your job is to maintain the chat channels and keep them clean, playing the game might be a secondary issue.

That being said, though, surely it'd be more fun to actually PLAY the stuff people yammer on about on channel, right? Christ, I've gotten into a couple games that way because some friends wouldn't shut the fuck up about them.

I’d love a real statistical breakdown but it seems like 80% of the player base of these games are casual to passionate but they really just want to play for fun. The type of people you can get to moderate are either the 10% who just want to power trip because they suck at the game and the 10% that want you to roll back the last update because it broke their favorite insane exploit. You end up having to pick either dangerhairs or people who throw their tendies because you won’t unban birthday pikachu.

Agreed, but there's more to it. All these people are purportedly being appointed from the Guide program. The Guide program, for emphasis, where they're being fast-tracked in over people who are actually doing what their job description entails in helping newcomers.

If the majority of the people appointed by DE to be chat mods are people who can be matched in skill by your average newbie in less than a week of real time, and are being given preferential treatment in allowing them to be appointed despite a lack of accreditation by the very Guide program being used to put them in place, then what are they being appointed for?

Diversity, of course!

I didn't know about the Guide program. But I presume being a Guide entails at least some understanding of how to play the game.

So what we've got here, I guess, is a pack of affirmative action hires. Yay.

Glenn is pretty antagonistic towards the community yes, but apparently he (and the other devs) have no hand on shit regarding the PR - you can say that by remembering how well he handled the Hieracon shit he caused. I can see the PR people telling him for the love of god to shut up.

I'd say it's one of the PR people besides Danielle or just her anyways.

This reminds me of when the internet was really starting to get big for companies, like 2011 or so, they were singing the praises of mass-hired “digital natives” people who already knew how to use Twitter basically. A bunch of companies simply hired on their entire social media team all at once and some of those people’s only qualifications were knowing how to use the google. Now everyone can and they need a new angle to be necessary.

Oh god, I had completely forgotten that debacle. Excellent points.

And Glenn didn't even knew he was being antagonistic towards people when people talked to him about it on tennocon. It wasn't out of malice. It's the good ol' tism, so he gets a pass IMO as he's the optimization guy along Steve.

The only people I'd say did shit out of malice against other players were RevxDev, Rob/AGGP, Misan and Telluric.

Danielle is just a polite version of Price who doesn't work on writing.

Also edit: I've played this shit since closed beta, I think I saw every single drama.

*smugs in MR 26*
I sense someone's MR game is weak.

Seriously, though. All that extra Daily Standing is good.

Or, you can go to a relay and do practice runs.

I second this. MR 22+ becomes some absolute ultra autism to push through so being able to practice and get a flow down makes the rank test so much more manageable.

I can understand wanting to put people in place who can be actively moderating more than they are actively playing, it becomes a conflict of interest for the person appointed if all they want to do is enjoy the game and play it but have to spend all their time parenting speds in chat instead. The problem with this is appointing people that don't or have never really played the game won't understand player frustrations when shit gets heated. That to me is the biggest issue with appointing non-player mods ( all Tumblrina bullshit aside) they don't know the game, they don't play the game, they're just there to language police and power trip all over everyone else's fun.

I haven't looked but I'm sure if you looked at their player profiles they'd have 40-50% usage on a single frame or weapon where they just play whatever is the most meta build at any given moment. Having gotten to MR22 (the only way to increase your MR is to use different weapons and frames) I can pretty definitively say that a lot of the weapons and frames in that game are absolute hot garbage.

You can play hundreds of hours of this game and make zero progress on your MR if you find something you like and just stick with that but it also makes you a total chump.
