Voat - Reddit clone full of alt-righters who call people they disagree with shills

I’ve only used/lurked Voat just to get to the funny section on their site, along with the occasional programming and gaming threads they have on there. It would be funny if voat users decide to start accounts on KF, while calling us shills for not pos rating them on every post they make.

Some speculation that the site has been funded until this point as a place to spread QAnon conspiracy theories. Would make sense, the Trump election team is shutting down at this point, Q is going silent, now they're pulling the plug on Voat too.
It started before Q took off, didn't it? I wouldn't be surprised if it was being maintained for that after the initial funding ran out though.

I used to love Fat People Hate on Reddit, and for a while it was also good on Voat. Then Voat turned to shit, and later I could not even reach the site. Fat People Hate can no longer be found on Bing, probably thanks to fatties at Micropork.

Yeah, I think they could still run cards until 2016-2017. It would make sense if since then they'd just been being cut fat checks from Adelson or Roger Stone or whoever's running the larp, which obviously got cut off after Trump lost.

Copying my spergy aside about Voat from the OAG thread cause this kinda got me nostalgic for the old Woahverse and early Voat days:

I'm kinda sad to hear about Voat dying. Bit of a Powerlevel, but I used to hang out on Voat, mainly /v/gaming and a few smaller verses, back when it was Woahverse. Seriously went downhill has Reddit purged stuff like /r/niggers and /r/fatpeoplehate and all the spergs migrated en masse. Not dissimilar to 8chan the original admin (Atko) ditched the site and Puttitout refused to clamp down on sperging. A meta user group literally took over /v/gaming and other defaults by spergposting in bad faith then whining to Putt about "Mod Abuse" when the jannies would ban them. Atko was just a cool dude who built a Reddit clone that was more efficient as a student project and I hope he's doing well after he fell off the face of the internet.

Flipping through Voat's top posts for old times sake and all the top posts of all time and they're all from like 5 years ago. Mostly announcements but a few random posts and some Q-Anon sperging. The site was never too active, but it really became a ghost town if you weren't affiliated with the Reddit refugees or Q nutcases.

The default takeovers were pretty much the end of the site for me, and them outright celebrating TotalBiscuit's death cause he was an "SJW" sealed it. All of a sudden you could spam the same soyboy Switch meme to /v/gaming day after day and the mods had to allow it or be threatened to be removed over muh free speech. Kinda curious of anyone knows what happened to Atko, dude was actually cool. At least as far as I'm aware we didn't get a furry sperging arc with him like with Hotwheels.

It’s embarrassing but it’s true, I just can’t keep it up. I’ve tried meditation, I’ve tried prayer, I’ve tried reaching out for help. Some solutions worked for a little while but nothing has remedied the underlying issue. No matter what I do, I simply just can’t keep it up. I expect most will be disappointed and let down, while others will just point and laugh. So be it, it’s a problem every man like me will face at some point.
One thing is true though, while I kept it up, it was glorious in many ways. It was the hardest (website to corrupt with CCP rules), it was the biggest (bundle of laughs ever… 4chan raids us and we didn’t even notice), it was bulging (with red pills and truth that you can’t find anywhere else), it was throbbing (with people eager to teach others the deception of the world). It’s so great in so many ways that it has a list of haters who will be extremely aroused by this post.
I know I’m going to get a hundred PMs from all of Voat’s hottest girls (Voat has some hot women, fact) with tips and tricks on how to help me keep it up. While I appreciate the concern and the offers of lending me a hand, we’re just going to have accept the situation for what it is- it’s just not going to be much fun for anyone.
/sneed (end of sarcasm)

What happened

I fight not being bitter and resentful. You see, this wasn’t supposed to happen, at least not now. The short of it is that the “Angel” defaulted on the contract in March 2020. This is when Voat lost all of it’s funding. I personally decided to keep Voat up until after the U.S. election of 2020. I’ve been paying the costs out of pocket but now I’m out of money.

A New Perspective

Instead of feeling pity or vengeful, I’m instead going to celebrate the fact that Voat stayed up for so long. In my opinion, Voat is and will always be the biggest dysfunctional family on the internet. Voat users were much more intimate with each other than other sites (chances are you have a handful of enemies and a handful of friends that you can list by name at a moment’s notice). Voat always had a better community dynamic than any other site on the internet. Considering everything, Voat was untouchable. There will never be another Voat and each of us had the opportunity to enjoy it. That’s awesome.
Some say life is worth it all if you can help just one single person. In this way I know Voat was worth it because you guys have changed thousands and thousands of people’s hearts and minds. You’ve made so many people aware of the lies taught as truth and the truth taught as conspiracy. It’s beautiful. What a great thing.
I love you all. Every single one of you. I hope you all have a life filled with overflowing joy and happiness. So many of you have been so selfless over the years, helping in so many ways. My heart is just touched when I think of all the good that was generated. Fucking love you guys (Say it in a slurred drunken voice).
Another great thing is that we stayed true over here on our end. Atko and I never betrayed our users. Never once. In fact, I can list example of example of how we ended up doing the right thing over what we wanted to do or what we felt like doing. I’ve come to find that doing the right thing is often the hardest thing. But we did it. We didn’t sell out and we passed the test.

The Sacrifice

I will lay Voat upon the cross on December 25th 2020 at 12 noon PST. I have chosen Christmas as the day to do so in honor of the only True thing you will find in this world and that is Jesus Christ, the son of God, and the only way to the Father. I chose 12 noon in honor of the twelve disciples who spread the message of salvation to the world. In this way, my hope is that perhaps 12 people will carry the cross for Freedom of Speech and sacrifice part of their lives for an ideal in the way I did, but hopefully with much more success, glory, and reward.

The Triumph of Defeat

It seems like a great time to share one of my favorite quotes, so I will leave it here.

For those who I’ve let down, please forgive me. I’m sorry Atko. I love you like a brother.

Looks like they're calling it quits, the guy is making a big sideshow about funding and most of the comments are bitching about how there was no request for a donation drive. Likely the people running it just want to call it quits on an unprofitable venture.
Voat very much got the same treatment kiwifarms got and then some, no way to fund the site except through crypto and dubious means because the payment processors all cut it off.

Either way its sad to see the remnants of the pizzagate investigators getting booted off their final home, in the end everything they dug up and researched didn't matter anyway.

in the end everything they dug up and researched didn't matter anyway.
Anything after 2016 was wasted effort. The Pizzagate crew etched deep mistrust of the elites into society, and that will have long lasting effects, this isn't some small group of people either, the Pizzagate stuff featured on Joe Rogan multiple times over the years and that podcast has a very large listener base, almost any male from the age of 16-40 has a general grasp that elites were coaxed into incriminating sexual acts and that this was used as blackmail, they may not care about stupid details like some Pizza parler in D.C, just that the elites are compromised. The media can rant all they want but their insistence in pushing against the Pizzagate shit only makes them look like an accomplice, it would have been better to just outright ignore it instead of the weak Texas Sharpshooter tactic of cherrypicking the weakest bits of the scandal they attempted. This mistrust only deepened when Epstein was arrested and then suicided in suspicious manner.

As for Voat, I think the idea of a centralized forum is doomed to failure, software like Lemmy is likely going to be the future for Reddit refugees. The censorship problem is becoming too large to ignore and its slowly going to drive out enough people that alt-communities will form.

Last time I was on Voat a bunch of microdick fucks got themselves modded and were just overpowering people with those one sentence replies that permavirgins do then ban or mute the person they were attempting to wave all 2.5 erect inches at.
I just trashed the password and logged out forever months ago.

‘Free speech’ Reddit clone Voat says it will shut down on Christmas

Co-founder says a key investor backed out in March
Voat, an “anti-censorship” alternative social network that’s been described as the “alt-right Reddit,” is scheduled to shut down on December 25th. Voat co-founder Justin Chastain announced the pending closure yesterday, saying the site had run out of money after an investor defaulted on their contract in March. “I personally decided to keep Voat up until after the US election of 2020. I’ve been paying the costs out of pocket but now I’m out of money,” Chastain wrote.

Voat was founded in 2014 and hosted Reddit-like forums with minimal moderation. It grew rapidly after Reddit added an anti-harassment policy and banned five subreddits that it said violated the rules, including its infamous r/fatpeoplehate forum. The site set a model for other “censorship-free” alternatives to mainstream web platforms, a category that grew to include Gab, Parler, and the defunct crowdfunding site Hatreon.

While these sites often don’t take an explicit political stance, they’ve attracted a largely far-right user base that’s incensed by bigger networks’ crackdowns. Voat also provided a home for the QAnon conspiracy movement after it was purged from most other platforms.

However, Voat faced chronic funding and technical problems, as well as denial-of-service attacks and an apparent warning from law enforcement about threats made on the site. Chastain warned in 2017 that Voat was likely to shut down, but a year later, he announced a partnershipwith the unnamed investor, keeping the site online.

Other alternative social networks have struggled to gain traction as well. Gab migrated to the decentralized Mastodon network in 2019, after a mass shooting by a Gab user prompted PayPal and GoDaddy to sever ties. Parler experienced a massive user influx after the 2020 presidential election, but its momentum slowed rapidly. Voat’s death has been announced before, and it’s possible the site will pull through again — but its demise looks much more likely this time around.

“Instead of feeling pity or vengeful, I’m instead going to celebrate the fact that Voat stayed up for so long. In my opinion, Voat is and will always be the biggest dysfunctional family on the internet,” Chastain wrote in the farewell post. “I love you all. Every single one of you. I hope you all have a life filled with overflowing joy and happiness.”

Later, after some users speculated that the site had been a sting operation secretly funded by intelligence agencies, Chastain added an addendum. “You guys crack me up, even now you accuse me of being Mossad or a honeypot,” he wrote. “Damned if you do, damned it you don’t.”
I can't say this is a big loss. I barely tried it and most of its communities seemed to be dead.

Despite some people going completely off the rails, the pg voat was indeed full of great research. I trust they'll archive everything and will found a new home.

I'm convinced that a site with reddit's structure is prone to this type of meta takeover bullshit. Voat tried to mitigate this by limiting the number of subs that a single person could moderate and removing default mods that refused to follow their own rules. Sounds good, but the former doesn't work when you have a cabal in some secret clubhouse sub coordinating on decisions in their secret clubhouse sub, and the latter ended up being weaponized against defaults by being annoying as possible just within the rules then whining to Putt when they got banned.

Having a structured forum where people can't do this just works so much better. Seems that Voat users figured this out too with the new searchvoat bunker. SearchVoat.co also has a good archive of Voat posts if you replace the same URL with the SearchVoat.co to a link.

As much as I think that Putt was a doormat for the meta crowd in actually running the site, at least he didn't turn it into a grift like Watkins did with 8chan or zombify it to try and attract money. Better for a site to go out as it lived.

I very infrequently used Voat towards its decline over the summer. Not only was user engagement near nonexistent by that point, the site's throttling system killed the impetus to use the site. In order to make threads, you would need to get 10+ total upvotes from posts in whatever community you chose to participate in, making it a cumbersome experience. It's important to lurk, but starting threads for specific discussions is a key feature for user engagement. It struck me as a misguided attempt to filter out shills, but what's the point of joining a site when you can't use it for its most basic functions out of the gate?

I spent about a year on v/fatpeoplehate, after it got booted from Reddit and before it went completely to hell. When I got banned for expressing sympathy for an obese child, I decided I'd had enough; it was already going downhill even then. But damn, those were fun times while they lasted. I only checked in to see what was going on a couple of times in the years following; the first time, it was a total shithole, snd the second time, it was pretty much dead.

Atko was a cool dude who seemed genuinely surprised that his student project suddenly became a hotbed of free speech; I was surprised he decided to roll with it, and take all the shit flung at him, at least for a while. Semper Fi to him, wherever he may be.

Reddit is pissing on their grave now:
Voat was an all-around dumpster fire in various ways, but those Reddit comments just emanate smug, elitist leftism. Everyone who's in any way right-wing is a "redneck".

In the early days, Voat was nice for having FatPeopleHate up, for amusing news articles or what-not. By the end of it, everything has conglomerated together and all the comments were about "niggers" and "kikes". My last post on FPH, there were a few people who believed I was a part of a zionist conspiracy to take over, because I hadn't been active for 9 months prior to that. The words were "Open ur eyez peeple!" They were fucking DUMB!

I left in 2017 because it was just too toxic. The conspiritards ruined it.

I didn't use voat for very long but I miss maroonsaint. He was like the hormelcoffee of voat. Kind of strange how all my old haunts are banned, totally different than how they used to be, or just nonexistent now.

I had a really good submission for them, too. It’s a anorexic blind lesbian that started dating a mega fat and gained 100lbs in only a year. Her wifey is a feeder

I remember this website as being a free speech Reddit clone.

Honestly, Voat could've been big had they've launched around 2022 or 2023 when the woke stuff has begun receiving a lot of backlash (Kick and Rumble got big because they've sold themselves to people as being less restrictive alternatives to Twitch and Youtube at the time).

So had Voat launched its services by the start of the 2020's rather than the late-2010's then they probably could've actually been a competitor for Reddit. But instead, its potential got squandered and Voat got shut down long before alt-tech/new tech really took off. What a shame.
