Card payments are failing across the UK and elsewhere in Europe, Visa has said.

Customers have been complaining that payments are being declined, but some report contactless transactions are proving more successful.

Barclays and Bank of Ireland advised customers to use ATMs to withdraw cash, which appear to still be working.

Visa is working to resolve the issue but one payments firm said transactions were now working intermittently, but there was a backlog.

The Payment Systems Regulator told the BBC it understood the problem to be limited to Visa card payments only.

Mastercard and American Express both said their networks were working.

Supermarket Tesco said chip and pin payments were not affected, but contactless payments were. Sainsbury's also said it was experiencing problems.

Responding to complaints on social media, HSBC said there were issues with processing Visa payments, which were intermittent, but were "slowly recovering".

Jay Curtis, 32, is in Swansea and had two cards declined in B&Q.

"I had £240 worth of stuff in my trolley," he told the BBC.

"My card just wouldn't go through. I tried and again and then I tried with another card but it still wouldn't go through.

"I didn't have cash on me so I had to drive all the way home."

The Bank of England, which oversees electronic payment providers such as Visa, said it was "aware of the issue currently affecting Visa and working with the firm to resolve the situation".

Transport for London said it expected customers to still be able to use their contactless payment cards to pay for travel on its buses, trains and Tubes.

We are aware some customers are experiencing Visa debit card issues. This is impacting multiple banks across Europe. We will update when we know more. Cash withdrawals can be made at any BOI ATM.

However, Paymentsense, which runs card services for small businesses, said transactions were now starting to go through but there was a backlog.

We now understand that #contactless transactions have a better chance of going through. We’d encourage affected customers to try contactless transactions where possible.

I do love that most people are blaming Jamie Oliver for this in the UK, saying he's trying to interfere with the Friday Night Takeaway.

Had to work retail with this shit going on today. The queue for the cash machine by the door went half way down the store.
That, and people holding up the checkout line with either:
a) Trying to pay with their card repeatedly, despite being told it wasn't working.
b) Not noticing the signs we put up and having to leave their shopping to go get cash out.

Those were the days.

The gas station I worked at had the CC system go down, so we had to use these damn things all day.
Had to call the bank first to make sure it was a valid account, them use this thing (don't remember what it's called).
Had customers screeching at me all day, like I made the system go down just to personally inconvenience them.

I primarily use a cards for my day-to-day purchases but I typically make sure I have at least $20-40 cash on me at all times in case bullshit like this happens. I assumed most people did the same, but I guess I was mistaken.

You know what's weird? Last Saturday several of the banks in Australia went down for half the day and now seven days later it's happening in Europe? It was annoying as fuck here last week, particularly since just before it went down I travelled interstate to Nimbin, so you have my sympathy eurokiwis :(

How was the weed there?

God, there is nothing worse for a retailer than having your card machines go down. You might as well shutter the doors.

Godspeed, businesses.

Unlike his ideas for school dinners.

I mean, school dinners did need to be healthy because children not having control over their diets are the only ones with an excuse for being fucking spherical.

His personality is just horribly grating though, when Hugh-Fearnley Whittingstall seems like less of a poncy wanker than you you've basically failed as a cook forever.

Oh I agree, but kids won't go for his fancy ingredients, much less the cash strapped schools.

I would have loved to have seen Gordon Ramsay in charge of that campaign.

'EAT THE FUCKING BROCCOLI YOU ROTTEN LITTLE SHIT!'

Good thing I got a Mastercard. Though work is going to be crazy lol.

My card provider texted me in the middle of this fuckery yesterday to tell me I had been given a massive and unasked for limit increase (I paid the bugger off in full last month)

I was impressed by this level of unintentional trolling

the globalist clampdown begins. dry-run for seeing how people react to not having access to their "money" which they have voluntarily given away to jewish financial institutions. number of the beast. no coincidence that kanye's album was released today.

If things ever got to the point where banks and credit card companies shut down or refused service, you'd have bigger problems than not having a few wads of cash on you. By that point you'd be trading food for bullets or bullets for food.
