So apparently DNA tests have proven that a viking warrior long since thought to be male was actually a woman.

The remains of a powerful Viking — long thought to be a man — was in fact a real-life Xena Warrior Princess, a study released Friday reveals.

The lady war boss was buried in the mid-10th century along with deadly weapons and two horses, leading archaeologists and historians to assume she was a man, according to the findings published in the American Journal of Physical Anthropology.

Wrong.

“It’s actually a woman, somewhere over the age of 30 and fairly tall, too, measuring around [5 feet 6 inches] tall,” archaeologist Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson of Uppsala University, who conducted the study, told The Local.

And she was likely in charge.

“Aside from the complete warrior equipment buried along with her — a sword, an ax, a spear, armor-piercing arrows, a battle knife, shields, and two horses — she had a board game in her lap, or more of a war-planning game used to try out battle tactics and strategies, which indicates she was a powerful military leader,” Hedenstierna-Jonson said. “She’s most likely planned, led and taken part in battles.”

The discovery marks the first genetic proof that women were Viking warriors, according to science publication Phys.org.

The Viking grave was first found and excavated by Swedish archaeologist Hjalmar Stolpe in the late 1800s.

But a few years ago, osteologist Anna Kjellström of Stockholm University noticed its skeleton had fine cheekbones and feminine hip bones, researches said.

They conducted DNA analysis and confirmed it was a female.

“This image of the male warrior in a patriarchal society was reinforced by research traditions and contemporary preconceptions. Hence, the biological sex of the individual was taken for granted,” Hedenstierna-Jonson and other researchers wrote in the report.

The research was led by the Stockholm and Uppsala universities.

I believe a mistake was made before with a warrior from an earlier time that turned out to be a teen boy that just had a more effeminate skeletal structure (likely due to being in the midst of puberty). But DNA tests are saying this was definitely one female.

I honestly don't know a whole lot about vikings as I was more into mythology than history. But I've heard of things like shield maidens before.

Pretty interesting. I'm surprised that the feminist sites aren't gushing over this woman's life. But i guess they're more concerned with pronouns and vidya game girls being too sexy.

Female warriors were not that seldom, in fact, whenever a siege was afoot women had to fight, too. It's simply a matter of unavoidability. The whole "Woman, stay in the kitchen!" was only a brief period in human history. Our ancestors didn't had the time to argue about gender issues. It's either a case of success or failure. As soon as shit hit the fan everybody had to do his/her damn job.

I'm surprised that the feminist sites aren't gushing over this woman's life.

Female robbers don't fit the bill of the "naturally pacifist womyn". Heaven help us if we ever admit that women are just humans, too.

Can we also add to that that women have been successful military leaders at many, many points in human history as well?

Boudicca of the Iceni and Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra, both of whom BTFO'd the Roman Empire (at least for a time, before they came back and stomped them with superior numbers etc); Aethelflaed, daughter of King Alfred the Great, who finished off her father's work in reclaiming England from the Vikings; Jeanne d'Arc; etc.

Incidentally, I think Jeanne d'Arc was the last era, at least in Europe, that women were soldiers for some time. They tried to find a reason to burn her at the stake but couldn't prove witchcraft or heresy or anything like that so they went with "wearing men's clothes" and claimed that full plate and a big fuck-off sword is only for men. I think so anyhow.

There still were women soldiers but who crossdressed as men; this was reportedly fairly common anyhow.

Yeah, finding lady-viking warriors is old news, but I did see some derpy idiot insisting that the grave must have been robbed of it's original man-warrior contents, and that this woman has to have been his wife and/or slave who was sutee-d, even though that isn't a Viking custom at all.

My family is mostly Scandinavian so I think it's pretty badass to know what my great-great-great etc. grandmothers were like.

It's a sin to be proud of being white in progressive circles. Viking culture pages on fb have been banned for being white supremacist even if they had nothing whatsoever to do with the concept.

That's nice, there are already found Amazon burials in Iron Age Steppe region and there are women warrior burials in late Iron Age Scandinavia, let me know when there's osteological evidence of one with healed bone fractures which shows did actual hard fighting.

This drives me insane. "It's not okay to be proud of being white, because that is a false construct which Black folks must make-do with because slave trade!! But you can be proud of being Italian or German or Irish! Wait, no. Not that either. Thems the breaks."

A genetic freak of nature that was probably the size of Gabi Garcia with Test levels higher than most men. Naturally.

Reminds me of that one motherfucker they found in Russia. 7ft tall, broad, thick, structurally flawless skeleton. Then they did some test on it...and by measuring the pressure put on the bones, they concluded this man likely had a musculature like Arnold Swartznegger. Proportionate. Again, Test level to maintain that kind of mass must have been insane. Most likely died of a heart attack before he turned 30.

Well many Norse families would pack up the whole family and move away. So it made sense for the First Wife to know how to use a sword.

Also there's another reason...
The Norse Pagans practiced a kind of polygamy. The first wife was an independent woman who had some semblance of property rights. She could also divorce her husband.
Now the rest of the wives were one step above the family thralls. These women were war trophies and although their children weren't born into bondage; they didn't stand to inherit anything when their father passed away. These "wives" were literally stolen from other Norse or British or European villages. The best way to prevent being carried off while your husband was on campaign? Learn to use a short sword...

It makes perfect since for there to be an armed woman there... this isn't some revolutionary finding. The Norselands used to be harsh lands. It required people to be harsh in order to survive.

Oh before I forget... when did it become progressive to suggest that women in the Middle Ages were oppressed and weak? Mathilde of Tuscany was a key commander during the investiture crisis. She forced Heinrich Salian to kiss her foot and prostrate himself in front of the Pope in Rome during the investiture crisis... you don't get much more badass than that.

Is this supposed to be some groundbreaking news?
Maybe they could have shown a female warrior who wasn't a vicious murderous raping pilliger. Like this lady:
Onna_bugeisha_Ishi-jo,_wife_of_Oboshi_Yoshio.jpg

The Onna bugesisha, a Japanese female warrior of noble birth that fought during the sengoku period of Japan. They were given a naginata as a weapon to prioritise skill and reach over strength, giving them an edge over their likely male opponents. As such, they were used as mostly to defend castles and farmland rather then be sent out to attack other provinces. Their make up was designed so that from afar, opponents could not tell their gender. A good example of one would be this lady:

Yeah. It's my understanding there were no such markings on this skeleton, either.

Too many modern women think reality must mirror their stronk female action/super heroes or someone is a lying misogynist. Male superior physical strength is just a matter of socialization, don't you know!

Jeez... That's going really far. But then again we aren't allowed to be proud of European heritage anymore because colonialism.

All you need to do is give her blue toys instead of pink.

Maybe this woman was more of a strategist given the board game she had.

She was but a pawn of Patriarchy's War Machine. See how oppresshed women have always been?

Allowing the English to kill Jeanne d'Arc is the vilest and most disgraceful act of French cowardice, exceeding even surrendering to Hitler.

I'll note that despite the English practice of the time of not allowing lawyers for criminal defendants, she acquitted herself well and would have won even in a rigged kangaroo court had they not tortured her to get fake confessions. The gutless coward Charles VII, whom she had basically placed on the throne, absolutely failed even to attempt to rescue her.

If you ever needed a reason to loathe the French other than just that they're fucking French, this one would do by itself.
