The main problem is that the current console generation has a high ratio of remasters to new games. When you look at game releases for a month and its all last gen stuff it makes you wonder why you bought a new console in the first place.

As for good remasters, I like what they've been doing with PS2 games on PS4. They basically just up the resolution, add wide screen, trophy and capture support, and they have some really good games like Rogue Galaxy and Dark Cloud 1&2.

Honestly I'm all for a remaster that adds trophies/cheevos to something that didn't have them before because I'm a fucking slut whore for cheevos.

And I'm super looking forward to the FF12 remaster for exactly that reason. I've always wanted a cheevo for Yiazmat so I can display my autism for the world to see.
Wait, did they actually rerelease the Dark Cloud games? I loved those as a kid.

-Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection (PSP): Final Fantasy IV is probably one of the most frequently remade games in the series, but this one is the best of the Bunch. Basically it has crisp, 2D sprites, and all of the bonus content from the Game Boy Advance version(2 Bonus dungeons and the ability to switch out party members after a certain point). But that's not all. It is also has both the SNES and DS version soundtracks, and is bundled with its sequel Final Fantasy IV: The After years, with the dungeon taken out of the Wii port restored and a new bonus boss, as well as a completely new short interlude game that takes place between the two of them. As with most FF handheld ports there is also a music box for both games , but also an art gallery of a wide variety of official art of the games. For those that get the physical UMD version, they also came with character cards of the original version's final party(Cecil, Kain, Rosa, Rydia, Edge)

Ehhh I sort of disagree with this. I prefer the graphics in the original version, and the ability to switch out characters is one of the worst features from the GBA version. It's also the easiest version of the game.

Any remake of a nostalgic classic is worth the money in my opinion, I just bought the remake of Dragon Quest 7 on 3DS and it actually has some changes for the better like less random encounters since you can see the enemies on the field/in dungeons allowing to avoid unwanted low exp battles.
I really wanted to buy Skyrim Special Edition but... no mods on PS4(I know I know get a better PC or Xbox).

Anyone know of Metroid 2's remake? Nintendo can DMCA it but it's now immortalized on the internet.

It depends a hell of a lot on the game, and as has been said the amount of time that has passed since the original was released. I felt they did a bloody brilliant job with the PSP Tactics Ogre remake. The Darksiders 2 remaster was nice and the fact that they gave it to PC owners for free was awesome, seriously under-rated game. While it wasn't technically a remake I really enjoyed what they did with Zelda - A Link Between Worlds on the 3ds despite thrashing Zelda LttP hard back in the day. On the subject of 3ds I also loved Tales of the Abyss being my favourite in the series, and whilst not much was done to update it enough time had passed to be interested again.

For the right project at the right time I'm willing to part with my money.

I like the idea of Remasters generally, but I think its best for games that were made for non-HD consoles. Remastering games that were on PS3/Xbox 360 doesn't make much sense to me, as very little time has passed and the amount of improvement can only be so much, while when touching up older games there's a lot you can do with them. Its also important that remasters are actually improvements; for PC, the Bioshock remaster is arguably a worse version of the game. And then there's horrible blunders like the Silent Hill HD Collection which wound up using unfinished versions of the games for the HD touchup, resulting in screwups like missing fog and comic sans font on signs.

Anyways, my favorite remaster is probably Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD Remix. While the improvements in the models and textures aren't very much in KHII, the orchestrated soundtrack was gorgeous and it finally brought over the Final Mix versions of these games to the West, which is really important for KHII especially since it completely rebalanced the game in its extra difficulty setting and added lots of new boss fights. The model updates are a bit more noticable in BBS and being able to use the right analog stick to control the camera is a real treat.

Only remakes I have tried so far were Homeworld Remastered and Black Mesa, both of which I liked. They both substantially modernized gameplay and visuals while staying authentic to the overall feel of the originals.

Well, the new consoles have very limited backforwards compatibility and the idea of playing the older games through a cloud system(essentially just renting them) is a very unappealing prospect for me, as would be getting two consoles just so that I could buy the older generation's exclusives. I'd personally very much enjoy a HD remake of Demon's Souls on the PS4 as I believe so would other people as well.

Black Mesa.
I enjoyed that as well. I hope they'd also remake Opposing Force and Blue Shift.

Have to agree with the Kingdom Hearts Remasters. I was so pissed that they didn't release Final Mix to the States when I found out about them, because they added a lot of cutscenes to potentially tie in with the spin-off games. Once Chain of Memories was remade for the PS2 (Hated that game on the GBA, but PS2 version was awesome) I knew they had to come to their senses and send Final Mix over. While it's a shame that we never got a KH3 on PS3, the remastered versions IMO make up for it.

I especially love the little things Final Mix has to offer, including adding abilities like Dodge Roll (which was super effective in KH1) to KH2FM.

For many years now, there have been several different mod teams independently working on remakes of Opposing Force and Blue Shift, but I highly doubt they will ever produce anything more than an internal alpha, much less achieve the same level of quality as Black Mesa. Black Mesa has been in development since 2004, and they had a dream team of developers, artists, coders, voice actors, etc, investing an insane amount of resources and devotion to the project on their own time and money. I think everyone was extremely impressed when they managed to produce a release candidate at all, since they were not crowdfunded and only started getting paid when they got on Steam early access in 2012.

I'll buy a remaster if I don't own the original game usually, and the console the original is for isn't one I have readily available to play.

I did pick up the PC version of Dead Rising the other day, and so far it's decently functional. It's also pretty much exactly the same as the 360 version, which is fine.

The screenshot is just default settings. I haven't played with any graphical stuff yet. Framerate is steady at 60 though.

Did capcom fix any of the issue with hit detection and or aiming on guns? Also how does it play on a mouse and keyboard?

Didn't they have to use an unfinished version of the game because lots of the original assets were lost?

Is anyone gonna actually buy the "updated" Duke Nukem from 3d Realms coming out on Playstation network?

Mind you, this isnt the rancid dumpster fire that is Duke Nukem: Forever. They are bringing back the classic game with a new "section" with voice acting from the original duke nukem, story from the original creator and level design from some supposed badass level designer.

It honestly looks promising. The twenty dollar price tag is a bit suspect but itbis classic Duke.

I have the one before the upcoming one.

The only recent one I can think of, that I actually played, was Oddworld: New n Tasty.

It's alright, I imagine if you're not a huge fan of the originals, you'll probably enjoy it more. However, I AM, and for me, it felt a bit like the revised versions of the original Star Wars movies, where Lucas changed lots of small things but those additions managed to fuck up the whole film.

I think most remasters end up being kind of trash. I've only heard bad things about most remasters and I can add the new Bioshock remasters to that list now too.

I've only played Stranger's Wrath, but I saw an interesting video on the changes to the art style for Abe's Odyssey. Really looks kind of disappointing.

Exactly, and to an outsider it may not seem too bad, but to me, the original is one of my favourite games, and the changes just ruin the mood and the atmosphere completely. NOT to mention the ads, for REAL products, now on the posters. Oh wait, they're no longer posters, they're futuristic holo screens. Again a bastardisation of the artstyle there.
