A new campaign front on Covid-19

It is difficult to overstate how much this debate has been shaped by the Covid-19 pandemic, from President Trump’s hospitalization with the disease to the last-minute skirmish between the Biden and Trump camps over whether Mr. Pence — who has interacted with White House advisers who have since tested positive for the coronavirus — should stand behind a protective plexiglass screen.
Mr. Pence, as the head of White House task force on the coronavirus, will presumably be pressed to account for the faltering White House response to a pandemic that has killed over 200,000 people in the United States. Since returning from the hospital, Mr. Trump has sought to recast the entire discussion on the pandemic, arguing that the virus is in fact not that serious and that Americans should continue to live their lives.
Will Mr. Pence carry Mr. Trump’s argument to Ms. Harris and the American public Wednesday night? Many polls suggest that it defies the fears of most Americans struggling to navigate the pandemic.
Mr. Pence is also likely to be pressed to defend Mr. Trump’s actions since his illness was diagnosed — leaving the hospital against the counsel of many medical professionals, minimizing the threat of the virus and dramatically removing his mask when he returned to the White House. The president has offered himself as evidence that Covid-19 can be beaten; does Mr. Pence agree with that?

For Mr. Pence, it’s not simply a matter of embracing an argument that the president thinks might help him win re-election. This is almost certainly Mr. Trump’s last campaign. At 61, Mr. Pence is looking at continuing his career in politics. How he handles those questions could end up defining him for a long time.

How does Harris finesse attacking Trump?

Vice-presidential candidates have only two things to accomplish in a debate: Defend the person at the top of your ticket. And attack the person at the top of the opposition ticket.
But that basic rule of thumb got a little more tricky for Ms. Harris. With Mr. Trump’s Covid-19 diagnosis and him just being back at the White House after three nights in a hospital, harsh attacks against an ailing president might be politically unwise. The Biden campaign pulled down its negative advertising attacking Mr. Trump as soon as he disclosed his diagnosis. Joseph R. Biden Jr. has stepped carefully in talking about the president.

Ms. Harris, a former prosecutor and a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has established her credentials as a tough interrogator with her questioning of officials like William P. Barr, the attorney general. She knows how to make a case. But can she attack Mr. Trump’s handling of the virus — which has come to define his presidency — without veering toward an overly personal attack on a president battling a potentially lethal disease?

It means threading a needle. Ms. Harris was an inconsistent debater during the Democratic primary — she had some good moments, and some not-so-good moments before she dropped out. She has never stepped onto a this prominent a stage.

How does Harris handle going off script?

Ms. Harris, most often remembered for her “that little girl was me” debate moment with Mr. Biden during the primary, is talented at delivering the slashing-when-prepared debate lines. That is, after all, the same skill set that she developed as a prosecutor and that elevated her during Senate committee hearings to star status among Democrats as she has bore in on Republican witnesses.

To that end, Ms. Harris arrived in Salt Lake City last Friday — the same day Mr. Trump was checked into the hospital — to begin her on-the-ground debate preparations. Karen Dunn, who readied Senator Tim Kaine to debate against Mr. Pence four years ago, is leading those efforts, which have also included Rohini Kosoglu, Symone Sanders and Liz Allen. Pete Buttigieg, who has played the role of Mr. Pence in Ms. Harris’s preparations, was spotted in town as well.
But debates are not set pieces and Ms. Harris will have to defend not just her own record but also Mr. Biden’s — and no candidate can be prepared for every eventuality, no matter how many index cards she studies, especially in 2020.
“This time it will be about requiring some level of knowledge — if not mastery — of Joe’s record, the Vice President Mike Pence’s record, Trump’s record and then of course defending my own record,” Ms. Harris said on Hillary Clinton’s podcast last week. “So that’s different.’’
Notably, Mr. Biden has undertaken some public rehearsals for his debates, including two televised town halls. Ms. Harris has been mostly cloistered since joining the ticket. The debate will be, by far, the most freewheeling exchanges of her time as vice-presidential candidate.

How race and gender play

Mrs. Clinton, the only woman to serve as a major-party presidential nominee, warned Ms. Harris, in so many words, about the corrosive role that sexism will play onstage.

“You should also be prepared for the slights, the efforts to diminish you, you personally, you as a woman, who is about to be our next vice president,” Mrs. Clinton said on her podcast. “So I do think there will be a lot of maneuvering on the other side to try to put you in a box.”

Academic studies have shown that women face different barriers in terms of public perception, and Ms. Harris is not just a woman but also the first woman of color on a major-party ticket.

Jennifer Lawless, a professor of politics at the University of Virginia who has studied gender dynamics, said that women generally had to show they were capable of standing up to “being bullied” but that Ms. Harris faced an extra hurdle.
“Because she is also a woman of color, she also has to walk that ‘Don’t look too angry’ line,” Ms. Lawless said. “These are cliché. But they’re cliché because they’re true.”
The mild-mannered Mr. Pence is unlikely to bully or even directly broach any gendered lines the way Mr. Trump might. But the impact of audience perception remains.
For months, the Trump campaign has tried to raise doubts about Mr. Biden’s fitness while attempting to cast Ms. Harris as its true foil, the real — and more liberal — power center in a potential Biden White House.
“She symbolizes everything that ‘Make America Great Again’ wants to push back on by virtue of being a Black woman,” Ms. Lawless said.

Attack or defend?

In 2016, Mr. Pence had a clear three-step strategy every time his vice-presidential rival, Mr. Kaine, attacked Mr. Trump. He offered a quick defense of Mr. Trump (Step 1); moved quickly to talk about the aspirations of a Trump presidency (Step 2); and swung into an attack on the Democrats (Step 3).
But striking the balance between attack and defend could be a particular challenge for Mr. Pence this time.
For one thing, after four years, there’s more to defend. This would have been a much different debate nine months ago, when Mr. Pence could have talked about the humming economy, job growth and a generally confident electorate. Now, Mr. Pence is going to be talking about the pandemic, the failure so far of Congress and the White House to come up with a stimulus plan and an economy that has gone off the rails.
For another, Mr. Trump has not had much luck attacking Mr. Biden so far; the former vice president has proved an elusive target, certainly when compared with Mrs. Clinton. Perhaps Mr. Pence will have more success.
But he has a third task as well: attacking Ms. Harris. Mr. Trump’s efforts at portraying Ms. Harris as a stalking horse for more liberal policies, who would be the power behind a Biden presidency, has resonated with the right. But those voters were already with Mr. Trump. The task for Mr. Pence is to make them resonate with any remaining undecided voters.

A preview of 2024?

Almost every vice-presidential debate is about two elections at once: the current one and the one that will follow — because so many vice presidents, and vice-presidential candidates, eventually run for president. (A quick recent list: John Edwards, Joe Lieberman, George H.W. Bush, Al Gore and, of course, Mr. Biden.)
This face-off is especially significant because of how soon both Mr. Pence and Ms. Harris could be leading their parties, given the ages of Mr. Trump (74) and Mr. Biden (77) and the specter of the coronavirus, from which Mr. Trump continues to recover.

Mr. Biden has already talked about himself as a “bridge” to the next generation of Democratic leaders. If he wins, he will be enabling Ms. Harris to cross that bridge as the first among equals among Democrats vying for that leadership mantle.
Mr. Trump has evinced no interest in transitioning out of power or the spotlight, but Mr. Pence is widely believed to have presidential ambitions of his own. The former governor of Indiana has treated his vice presidency mostly as an exercise — often a difficult one — to maintain zero political daylight between himself and Mr. Trump. But plenty of other Republicans are already circling around the 2024 election and seeking the mantle of Trumpism; Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas has been building his profile, and the former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley was recently in New Hampshire.

To paraphrase something I saw somebody on the internet post, there is no talent greater than the dark and powerful force within the DNC which seeks out, trains and deploys the worst, most smug, unlovable women on earth, and then gaslights the world into believing normal reactions to their unpleasantness are misogyny.
RNC really has lost their intimidation factor.

They been doing that since Bush as far as I know.

They use the southern strategy as well as the 1930s party switch theory to take advantage of that ownership.

Can’t guarantee 100% accuracy with this one, but I recall it playing out this way.

The Southern Strategy was a result of misreading the south after George Wallace had a clear shot at the presidency. It failed and was dropped. There was no real “party switch”, it was just the result of the Democrat Klan members doing overtly illegal activities that could be shut down quickly. Meanwhile the Republicans actually had to investigate and root out Klan members, because said members in the Republican party were in charge of holding the money for the organization and staying out of trouble to keep said money safe. They were smart enough to keep the actual funds out of the hands of the violent members, only reason the leader (can’t remember his name) got caught was because he raped and beat a woman till she tried to poison herself to make it stop. The cops barely got a signed testimony from her before she passed away, IIRC.

So yeah, a little speculating here, but someone probably tried to pull a “Klan revival” ploy through misinforming Republican leadership it was a good idea (via Southern Strategy) and failed, but the Democrat-run media could still run with it, leading to the “party switch” theory. The reality is that after being freed of all of the bullshit from segregation and the Klan, the Southern States wanted nothing to do with the Democrats or anyone parroting their ideas.

In short, this has been nothing but the Democrat party accusing the South of being the real racists (sound familiar?) after the South flipped off the Dems for being racist.

She's a lightweight who is not ready to be in the spotlight as a senior politician. Idk what kind of debate prep or pointers her team gave her, but they were either bad or she didn't listen. The body language says it all. She's putting herself up as a black woman, showing body language that is stereotypical of black women is not a good look. She also had the body language of someone getting pissed that she was being called out on her bullshit, which is not a good look either.

It's also clear from this debate and the primary that she is a good example of the Dunning Kruger effect. Both arrogant (not well hidden) and not very bright when it comes to debates. Pence's debate style both here and in 2016 is akin to a counter puncher in tennis. Politely assertive and doesn't make mistakes or if he does they are minor and he recovers, trips up his opponent because of his lack mistakes, and then exploits any weakness they show. Non verbal communication is as important as verbal, and her body language showed he got under her skin many times, and that she was floundering at points.

She has a certain whiney cadence and tone to how she speaks. That alone should turn people away. Imagine listening to that voice for 4 years.

Also don't know why she brought up Lincoln. When she first raised it last night, first thoughts were "wasn't he a Republican? Why are you talking about an old president who was in the party opposite you?"

As soon as the war was over Lincoln wanted to ship all blacks back to Africa, he was the Klan before the Klan; the OG Stormfront shitposter. I will quote Honest Abe himself and highlight the parts that would make Kamala's head explode if she read this.

I'll say this; Pence would definitely be scary if he got really mad, like being able to make you feel 2" tall & want to disappear, without needing to say a word..... sort of like my dad.

Terrifying.

He seems to have a very long fuse and a good nature. Watching the debate you could see he reacted to Kamala's lies and slander with a kind of disapointment more than anger. His counter attacks were a bit subdued and obviously came with effort.

Getting him angry is probably the worst thing you could do. Guys like that typically do not do anything by halves when they finally decide to cross the line, and Pence is a man of faith. He won't hesitate to go on a modern crusade if he feels the call is just.

Pence had a rally the next day for Trump after the debate.

Based Blackmen give us their thoughts.

Tucker talks about the Supreme Court Packing.

And Kamala lied about honest Abe lol.

The Washington Post offered a sharp rebuke to the "little history lesson" Sen. Kamala Harris shared during Wednesday night's vice presidential debate, which apparently "wasn't exactly true."

During an exchange with Vice President Mike Pence on the confirmation of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, Harris suggested that one of the most revered Republican presidents would be in favor of allowing a newly elected president to fill a vacant seat instead of rushing a confirmation in the heat of an election.

She made her argument in response to Pence saying that President Trump's appointment is following precedent.

“I’m so glad we went through a little history lesson. Let’s do that a little more,” Harris told Pence. “In 1864... Abraham Lincoln was up for reelection. And it was 27 days before the election. And a seat became open on the United States Supreme Court. Abraham Lincoln’s party was in charge not only of the White House but the Senate. But Honest Abe said, ‘It’s not the right thing to do. The American people deserve to make the decision about who will be the next president of the United States, and then that person will be able to select who will serve on the highest court of the land.”

Well, according to a report from The Washington Post on Thursday, Harris did not accurately describe what took place under Lincoln when filling the vacant seat of Chief Justice Roger B. Taney.

"Harris is correct that a seat became available 27 days before the election. And that Lincoln didn’t nominate anyone until after he won," the Post wrote. "But there is no evidence he thought the seat should be filled by the winner of the election. In fact, he had other motives for the delay."

According to Lincoln historian Michael Burlingame, Lincoln told his aides he wanted to delay his Supreme Court confirmation process because he was “waiting to receive expressions of public opinion from the country," though the Post noted, "that didn’t mean he was waiting for ballots so much as the mail."

"The overarching effect of the delay is that it held Lincoln’s broad but shaky coalition of conservative and radical Republicans together," the Post explained. "Congress was in recess until early December, so there would have been no point in naming a man before the election anyway. Lincoln shrewdly used that to his advantage. If he had lost the election, there is no evidence he wouldn’t have filled the spot in the lame-duck session."

The Post concluded, "So Harris is mistaken about Lincoln’s motivations in this regard."

National Review senior writer Dan McLaughin went even further, accusing Harris of "dishonesty" with her Lincoln anecdote.

"Lincoln, of course, said no such thing," McLaughlin refuted the Democrat Wednesday night. "He sent no nominee to the Senate in October 1864 because the Senate was out of session until December."

He added, "Kamala Harris is simply inventing history."

After getting my morning coffee I read through all 70+ pages with giving out the internet stickers of the needful. Watching this on the lolcow.tv was a wonderful treat and highly recommend it next time we get one of these happenings again.

I looked at this debate from the following points of view:

1. Who do I want to lead America if the President dies?
2. Who do I want dealing with other nations on behalf of America?
3. Who will do the best job of doing the work allocated to them on behalf of the president?

These are the roles and jobs of the VP of the US, these are their duties and who will fulfill them properly.

Pence nails all 3 points succulently. He is cool, calm, collected. He came off as a peace broker, a go between, he is willing to work with people he doesn't like to get the job done because Success>Feels. He has values that he stands up for even if it makes him unpopular to certain voters and he's not afraid to admit it. If Trump were to die tomorrow, I'd be just fine with Pence in the Big Seat.

Harris' demeanor spoke volumes about her characters. She is viperish, snarky, sassy and when pressed to make a point blathers through it with the look of smugness with the "Believe me cause I say so!" look on her face. Putin would annihilate her on any dealings with Russia, the EU would steamroll everything past her or announce they cannot work with her. She is not a team player she is out for herself and anything she can get (Harris administration?). She will sabotage Biden at every turn and make him look a fool so she can run as his heir apparent saying "I did ALL THE THINGS" when running. If Biden were to die in office America would be run by her cronies and I would feel absolutely fucked for my economic prospects for the future. Having someone who thinks everyone is attempting to "mansplain" things to her is terrifying as you get no room for alternative thought, they are discarded as irrelevant. You know who else thought like that? Stalin.

We can hash out the 'facts' of the debate and assign +1s, likes, and ❤️,on all the social medias. In the end we need to know that whomever is President that their backup can do the job as good or better than the President. Pence/SuperFly 2024

My dad is like that, too. lol

Rarely gets angry, but when he does you know it was something really important and I must have really fucked up.

"I hope I never disappoint him" is definitely the fatherly vibe you get from Pence. He's like the pastor dad character played by Tom Skerritt in A River Runs through It.

He projects the image of someone who if he became seriously angry, it would project "white anger" instead of "black anger" according to the Finnish. He wouldn't fly into a rage, frothing at the mouth, shouting and so on (black anger), he would be internally furious but calm on the outside, every word dripping with venom, as he sets out to utterly annihilate you and wipe your existence from this earth. Best war related example of "white anger"? Simo Hayha. Ice cold and calm as he butchered over 500 Russians. I get that same sense from Pence.

One of my favorite drill sergeants in IET on Sand Hill, was our platoon's senior DS (and was one of the few MSG/E-8s at the company-level, iirc).

The guy seriously reminded me of a Mexican Clint Eastwood; he had the same matter-of-fact growl that left no doubts, and had perfected the wear of his campaign hat to the point his eyes were always perfectly shaded, no matter wear the sun or light source was. A lot of times the only way we could tell if he was satisfied or watching was the set of his jaw, because otherwise he was like stone.

But when he was displeased, you didn't need to see his eyes; the utter disappointment & silence that eminated from the guy was far more effective than getting in a troop's face (usually while another DS did that job).

Those guys taught me what translates well into leadership and respect, and Harris has absolutely none.

Sorry for the late comment, I just finished watching the debate. I couldn't believe how condescending Kamala Harris was -- with her opponent being exceedingly calm it came off as socially inept, which she is, and it would have come off that way even if she were debating someone closer in temperament to herself. I'm sure her performance has turned many undecided voters away, and I doubt she gained any from it.

Holy fuck, this.

As I watched, I thought, "Harris has no business dealing with Putin or Xi Jinping. There is no fucking way they will take her seriously."

She'll get us into needless and ruinous wars, and sell us out to China.

Harris' demeanor spoke volumes about her characters. She is viperish, snarky, sassy and when pressed to make a point blathers through it with the look of smugness with the "Believe me cause I say so!" look on her face.
She is an absolute Mean Girl, and women voters in particular who can't see it are willfully blind. We've all dealt with That Bitch in one form or another, starting in middle school, and Kamala Harris is the distilled essence of That Bitch. And she can't even hide it, or soften it enough to not seem like an absolute harpy. Her essential meanness, arrogance, and lack of empathy keep showing on her face; she can't fucking hide it or unlearn it because it's so deeply ingrained, so much a part of who she is.

Hillary Clinton was unlikeable, but she was leagues better at pretending she wasn't an angry reptilian life-form struggling to keep her skin-suit from splitting open. Harris can't even manage that. It makes me think she's got one hell of an explosive temper behind the scenes, the kind that leads people to do incredibly destructive shit. She does not belong anywhere near the White House.

Putin would annihilate her on any dealings with Russia, the EU would steamroll everything past her or announce they cannot work with her. She is not a team player she is out for herself and anything she can get (Harris administration?). One thing in the debate that was particularly telling was her boasting about how many former cabinet members and other cronies of the George W. Bush administration were endorsing her and Biden.

Holy fuck, lady--do you remember when the left considered W. to be the worst president ever, the one whose administration was an ongoing cash-grab for all of his corporatist friends? You are bragging about this as a Democratic candidate for VP, who is certain to become president if elected? That's like announcing, "I am the epitome of an opportunistic swamp-dweller, with no principles but grabbing all the power I can get my hands on, and will attach myself to anybody who can benefit me, no matter who they are or what's good for the country."

We can hash out the 'facts' of the debate and assign +1s, likes, and ❤️,on all the social medias. In the end we need to know that whomever is President that their backup can do the job as good or better than the President. Pence/SuperFly 2024
I totally agree. As an ex-Dem, I never in a million years thought that one day I'd get behind an ultra-religious, far-right candidate like Mike Pence, but goddamn, it's 2020, and here I am.

Kamala Harris is a millstone around the Biden camps neck when they desperately needed a lifevest to keep above the water. Her inclusion on the Democratic ticket is in my personal opinion going to be the chief reason many independents either refuse to vote or vote Trump. They could not have picked a worse person for the VP slot.

Looking at how the California Senate elections are done thanks to Arnold destroying the GOP through jungle primaries. It was either the Latina or the Pajeet Nigger for the senate seat.

And the last GOP candidate that was on the ballot for the California Senate is apparently a RINO that endorsed Biden.

What a fully fucked and echo chamber of a state that Biden choose his VP out of. Stacey Abrams is starting to look better than Kamala or even Susan Rice.
