I'd call this whole story self explanatory really.

In a piss poor attempt at eliminating a medium-sized black market the government introduced strict new foreign currency laws, effectively banning the exchange of local currency for US dollars, Euros or British Sterling.

This has had a disastrous domino effect on the wider economy, with businesses unable to import and export vital goods and services, the economy has been slowly collapsing.

This has now begun to bite hard into the medical sector, with no ability to import much equipment and other necessities such as drugs Venezuela's hospitals are rapidly becoming a disaster zone.

This is in spite of the fact that the government of Maduro continues to spout out increasingly deluded statements and claims that Venezuela has a great healthcare system and isn't increasingly a bankrupted shithole that has run out of toilet paper, oil, and other basic necessities.

Is anyone remotely surprised? This happens in every hard left socialist economy. Venezula is only impressive in that they manage to piss away the worlds largest oil reserves.

Gg lads.

It's morbidly amusing to see that Venezuela in real life is now basically worse off than the Venezuela depicted in Mercenaries 2.

What's actually so stupid is that the government got it in its head that the opposition was funded by the black market, so got rid of the foreign currency to try and stifle the cash flow to the opposition. The result was an amazing disaster. The lack of a soverign wealth fund to help keep the economy afloat, or a proper diversification of the economy means this whole situation can only get worse before it gets better.

I wish the problem stop't here. Venezuela's dysfunction has metastisized to all aspects of everyday life. Cuba's less fucked than them.
I figure Venezuela's shitting the bed is why Cuba decided to refriend the US.

When the Soviet Union was collapsing, Castro had absolutely everyone get into food production, likely sensing that aid from the Soviets was going to dry up.

Afterwards, they relied on South America, Venezuela in particular, for trade. The two likely started to drift apart after Chavez's death.

The difference to me is that Castro cared about making Cuba a successful country by his own metrics. As immensely divisive a public figure as he is, he made an effort. The current Venezuelan government seems to be doing nothing more than deliberately running the country into the ground while preparing their private jets for when it comes time to wash their hands of the whole fiasco and walk away with a fortune made by corruption.

Cuba depended on Venezuela and brazil paying their bill.
Now that both countries are bankrupt and we kicked the socialists scum out of office, they had to quickly beg for American help

Say what you like about Hugo Chavez, at least he didn't drop a nuke on the economy in a spectacular, suicidal way.

The result is any opposition is going to have endless fodder for their arguments that it is time to do away with these staggeringly incompetent loons.

Venezuela is a virtual dictatorship now.
Maduro controls the supreme Court, army, and has mobilized a huge peasant paramilitary.
He said recently the "coupists and anti revolution Congress will dissapear soon".

They're saying that basic goods have disappeared because the government implemented price controls. I mean, do these clowns have any idea how basic economics works? You can't just say "okay, toilet paper needs to sell for this much". Otherwise there's no reason to produce more toilet paper because there's not enough return on investment. So, while you get cheap prices, there's not enough of the good to go around. Demand is artifically high because of the low prices, but supply is unable to meet the demand, resulting in a shortage.

B-but super socialist/Marxist governments are still a good idea, you guys!

Venezuela wishes it even had a government. All that's left are thieves, scavangers, and thieves and scavangers with better explosives.

It's Somalia in the rainforest, only more violent.
