If we gave that much of a fuck about the oil reserves, we'd have bent and begged for permission to send in our experts and parts to refurbish the refineries to the sour as fuck oil that comes out of the ground. So riddled with sulfur it can't be put in anything without heavy work.

Why would Americans come in if the commies would just take the fixed refineries right back?

We used to refine all of our own gasoline, gasoline prices were the cheapest in the world but it didn't weighted as much because we had fuck ton of reserve oil and we refined in surplus.

That oil is some of the toughest crude in the world. Only American refineries can process it.

Russia doesn't have the money to rebuild the extraction infrastructure, and have their own priorities, which don't include involvement in South America, that would guarantee a US response.

My family hosted a Soviet exchange student in 1989 [ETA: My bad it was 1991]. It was a last-minute host switch, as the girl's original host family had to relocate for a work transfer. So my parents didn't get the training about what to expect, or culture shock, or any of that. They went in blind.

When she arrived, we picked her up at the airport and then went to the grocery store to pick up dinner. It was a big store, though not a fancy one. It was one of those places where the toilet paper was stacked sky-high in the warehouse-like aisles. When we entered, she got visibly uncomfortable. Then she seemed almost angry. She asked my parents, in a skeptical/harsh voice, "who is allowed to shop here?" My parents told her "anyone," but she didn't believe it until she saw how weird I found the question, and I was too little to prop up a lie that well.

When she realized we were telling the truth, and that this wasn't just a store for apparatchiks but actually wasn't even the best grocery store in our two-grocery-store town, she sobbed howling sobs in the toilet paper aisle, the rolls stacked up to the ceiling.

Anyway, that's why I've never been tempted by communism.
