The Vatican appears to have modified its position against gender-affirming surgery and “gender theory” last year, raising the possibility of “exceptional situations.”

This week the Vatican published a speech by doctrine chief Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández where he said, “there are cases outside the norm, such as strong dysphorias that can lead to an unbearable existence or even suicide. These exceptional situations must be evaluated with great care.”

The Argentinian prelate, speaking to a theology conference in Cologne, Germany, explained: “We don’t want to be cruel and say that we don’t understand people’s conditioning and the deep suffering that exists in some cases of ‘dysphoria’ that manifests itself even from childhood.”

In April last year, the Vatican issued a strong warning against “gender theory” and said that any “sex-change intervention” risks threatening “the unique dignity” of a person.

The document, signed by Pope Francis, focused on what it describes as a range of threats to human dignity, including poverty, the death penalty, war, assisted dying, abortion, sexual abuse, and the abuse of women.

Last year’s text stated that attempts to obscure “the sexual difference between man and woman,” including gender-affirming surgery, should be rejected. “It follows that any sex-change intervention, as a rule, risks threatening the unique dignity the person has received from the moment of conception,” it added at the time.

While this week’s publication on the Vatican site acknowledges the possibility of gender dysphoria, it still makes clear that the church opposes the idea “that bodily-sexual identity can be the object of radical change, always subject to one’s own desires…”

Pope Francis has in the past welcomed a community of transgender women to his weekly general audiences while he signed off on a Vatican document permitting trans people to be godparents.

This comes as the ailing 88-year-old pope battles double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli hospital where he has been since mid-February, often working during the day.

From the hospital, the pontiff has still been making decisions such as calling a meeting of pope and cardinals to decide sainthood causes at an unspecified date.

They are slow walking you off the ledge while denying it all the way, Catholics.

Wake up and get out while you still can.

You’re choosing to take this position while the pendulum is swinging back the other way and even the studies are now indicating that getting the chop is more harmful in the long run? For fucks sake.

Did anyone actually read the article? It's just journospeak for "they appear to be doing something by clarifying there may be very rare extreme edge cases they don't know about, therefore they are changing it". I fucking hate journalists so fucking much. Literally linguistic Jews.

there may be very rare extreme edge cases they don't know about,
But if you read the description of those "edge cases" it sounds suspiciously just like the mainstream "dead daughter or living son" rhetoric.

This isn't a departure from any doctrine, just another case of the Lugenpresse putting words in the Vatican's mouth.

The Vatican is just saying "yes, there are a handful of people who suffer from gender dysphoria. They need help". It still maintains that chop surgery and titty skittles are not the solution.

Those two ideas are not mutually exclusive.

The usual cope.

But the Vatican these days institutes change like a dog turning around and around before laying down. They make these little press releases that introduce a smidge of doubt here and a dollop of ambiguity there, all the while loudly denying that they are changing "official doctrine." Over the span of years it eventually adds up to a noticeable shift.

im no catholic, but seems to me a simple and logical understanding of christian theology would state your body is as god designed it, and any radical changes to it go against god's will. if god wanted you to be a woman you would have been born one.

To be fair, they also consider needing a specific exorcism "exceptional" in ways that make you go through multiple stages before seeing an exorcist, often including psychiatric help to ensure someone isn't just schizo.

His comments are stating he understands some troons feel very real dysphoria (rather than asspat addiction withdrawals) and they don't want to cause someone to lose hope and kill themselves over their stance. I can't imagine a troon would be killing themselves over the Catholic Church not supporting their lifestyle in current year, but I guess the Vatican wants to hedge their bet either way.

We all have our struggles, which is why Catholics conceptualized the seven deadly vices as ways we can be tempted. Lust doesn't get some people, but maybe pride does.

They all connect with each other as well, gluttony and lust can easily overlap. Regardless of the specifics, we are called to overcome our vices and practice their opposite virtue. If your vice is filthy pig sex with other gay men, you have to practice chastity instead of lust.

So a person being tempted with troon shit is called demonic for a reason, and mutilating the way we can provide more souls for God through procreation while promoting homosex for those who will not mutilate is obviously evil.

Or, you are incapable of nuance. See:

True, most troons are just AGP gooners who need to put down the porn, but no-shit dysphoria is like OCD or schizo hallucinations. Delusions aren't objectively real, but that doesn't make them less awful for those who suffer from them.

If it could be cured just by telling them "quit being a faggot and snap out of it", we wouldn't be having this conversation. If only it were that easy.

It's not a sin to be mentally ill. Crazy people are still people made in God's image. They need help in order to improve their lives and ultimately save their souls.
