On Tuesday, a local medical examiner released their report that concluded a 38-year-old man in St. Petersburg, Florida, died due to an explosion in his vape pen that sent two piece of shrapnel into his cranium. According to the Washington Post, it’s believed to be one of the first deaths of its kind.

At first, officials were uncertain if the cause of death could be attributed to the burns that covered 80 percent of his body. The Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner’s report lists the official reason for his demise as a “projectile wound of head.”

We’ve seen many vape devices explode over the last couple of years as their popularity has grown. The lithium-ion batteries can be highly volatile, especially in poorly manufactured devices that lack proper battery ventilation. According to the Times, the model that killed D’Elia was distributed by Smok-E Mountain. Its now-deleted Facebook page reportedly claimed the device was manufactured in the Philippines. Vapes by Smok-E Mountain can still be found online, and police say the model in question was a “mod” type. Vapers often alter their devices to achieve a more impressive cloud when they exhale, it’s unclear if the victim’s device had any problems caused by the manufacturer.

Too bad these things weren't around when the CIA was still trying to assassinate Castro.

Every story like this (falling asleep with a lit cigarette, battery exploding, etc) makes me glad I stopped smoking/vaping. (I used the vaporizer to help quit smoking)

So this company makes what are called mechanical mods, which means there is no regulation device. The whole thing is a circuit that is completed when you press the button. The resistance (ohms) of the circuit are dependent on the coil used, which is part of the atomizer, not the mod. It is installed by the user. If the coil is too low in ohms, you draw too many amps from the battery. That is surely what happened. Most vape shops sell cheap ass batteries that state they support 20 amps but in reality start getting hot around 10.

Ok, so people using normal equipment that isn't modded or whatever aren't in danger? That makes it better than the cell phone battery explosions, at any rate.

Well the word “mod” is really just a term to mean the part that holds the battery. Back in the day they were modified from old flashlights and the term stuck.

If you were to buy a device like this, you would need to install coils in an atomizer yourself, just like this guy did. You would just have to the calculation that tells you if the ohms of your coil would draw too many amps from your battery. This guy likely did not, and it caused an explosion.

It’s also possible that his battery was damaged and caused a short, which makes these devices into bombs as well. Mechanical mods like this are really unsafe for people that don’t know what they’re doing. Regulated mods however have electronics in them and will tell you “ohms too low” and will refuse to fire.

And nothing of value was lost.

Seriously, vapers are like e-cig users, just smoke a normal cigarette and get cancer and die you pussy faggots.

Anyone who uses an unregulated mod without doing the math on Ohm's Law (they even have apps you can download where you just plug in the numbers and it does the ,math for you) to see if it is safe, well kind of get hat is coming to them. And stores that sell those things to new vapers without telling them about Ohm's Law and the dangers, should lose their sales permits. This is basic vaping here. You should learn this shit when you wrap your first coil. Seriously.

Vaping devices were a thing that was never going to end well. Lithium Ion/Lithium Polymer batteries are complicated devices, which require lots of specialised circuitry to ensure safety and longevity. In this case, the most likely cause is that the battery was fucked, began offgassing, but because someone stuck it in a metal tube with no pressure relief it detonated like a pipe bomb.
