The OS literally told him, "this is probably going to destroy your system, only do this if you absolutely know what you're doing"

Maybe Windows just lies so often that retards have become conditioned to ignore warning messages.
A: It threw up pages of word vomit.
B: When he googled how to fix it, the solution was "type do as I say".
C: He picked popOS in part for it's ease of use.

Nothing he did was way out of line.

What games does it tend to be super useful for? If i'm playing shooters or crpgs it's gonna be mouse and keyboard, if elden ring or anything that's similar enough I go controller, so I guess I might not be the target demo for them based on the games I play. Admittedly though the controller does seem appealing in general assuming the price isn't terrible.
Dead Space 1+2 with trackpads is the best way to play them.

I think the solution is distros like Bazzite that do everything they can to make the user forget that theyre using the penguin.
As much as we all wish people had some common sense or curiosity when it comes to tech, the reality is that most people are impatient low IQ apes that need to be told “You’re not allowed to do this.” with no explanation.

Steam Frame is a Linux gaming ARM computer integrated into a headset. So "looking like it will work with Linux" is a teensy tiny understatement.
I'm curious at how long until they port the open-source VR stack on the Steam Frame. Had issues with Half-Life Alyx on Quest 2 and ALVR, and switching to WiVRn helped tremendously. I'll probably try out ALVR again in order to see if they fixed their crap on KDE/Wayland.
All these stupid retards are talking about 4K gaming when all I care about is 1440p gaming because I as a person who works in the video industry, know that 4K is fucking worthless for gaming outside of very special cases, and most people won't be able to utilize it effectively.
It's fine for video, and is definitely the maximum resolution one will ever need(like ever).
But for gaming the benefits are purely if you are at the viewing distance necessary to see it.
FSR works, and for most content past 7-10ft of distance on a 4K 65in screen, you won't likely notice it.
I would love to see how well vector arcade games can be rendered on a 4K display, especially one with a high refresh rate. It'll probably look dope on a OLED display.

It was a kernel update for the OS I was using "Suse" from the site I had downloaded the OS from originally and I was told it was needed for security. No one is infallable. It's quite possible I fucked up the install, but the end result was my computer was bricked on restart. I was in the middle of uni at the time and didn't have a day or two to figure it out. Should I have waited until classes were over for the semster? Hindsight says yes.
Yes and Windows updates regularly destroy installations.

The other caveat will be whether or not the stuff you want to play requires aggressive kernel-level anticheat. That stuff doesn't tend to work on SteamOS so if you're wanting to play DayZ or Rust or Apex or something, you're probably out of luck.
It’s worth noting that there is a database to see what games work on Linux installs of Steam.
From experience anything Gold or Platinum work out the box. Silver means there might be visual artifacts usually caused by nvidia graphics drivers, but still working. Last time i checked Helldivers 2 was categorized as silver because there is a thin border on borderless window mode.

I'm not surprised there's no headphone jack on the console since it's supposed to be connected to a TV anyway.

I am surprised there isn't one on the controller though.
They designed it to fit in entertainment centers, but they also expect it to be used as a desktop PC:

I'm surprised there's no headphone jack on the console or the controller.
It was different when apple did it because you needed a proprietary lightning port to aux plus a splitter one to charge at the same time but i think, as far as on the block itself, you really can just get a $5 usb to aux adapter if you need one.

Having one on the controller is pointless because it makes it harder to throw the controller at walls if it’s connected to something around your head.

Don't most monitors also come with headphone jacks nowadays? I know that both of mine do, at least.
Almost all of of mine do, but they're kind of a wash in terms of quality. The only one that doesn't is a Dell FHD slop monitor from an old job (and by old, I mean like 2022).

tbh if you're planning to use this at a desk, it'd be better to just grab a USB DAC or something with some actual chutzpah

This is why I always point to the Linus Tech Tips Linux Challenge videos. Linux people get mad about it, but that experience is the norm for outside Linux users.
I stopped watching that series after he tried to download something off of github, ended up downloading the webpage, and went on a huge rant about how that was Github/Linux’s fault.
I think the solution is distros like Bazzite that do everything they can to make the user forget that theyre using the penguin.
Bazzite is a distro developed by a small team of transexual furries (based on Fedora, which is developed by a large team of transexual furries) to serve a small segment of the computing market (gamers) based around a novel concept for how to manage a Linux distro (the whole immutability thing). Bazzite is essentially an experiment, and the idea that people who have never used a Linux distro in their life should start using an experimental distro is, as the libs say, problematic.

That said, I’ve never used it, so I can’t say what it’s really like. I think that’s the fundamental problem with the whole exercise of “new-user friendly Linux,” the people recommending the tools, DEs, distros, for “new users” often have never used them themselves and have no interest in using them.

SteamOS works way better than Windows for gaming.

Of course, it doesn't support call of duty and fortnite natively apparently, but that doesn't matter. Consumers will just play those games on their PS5 or even PC while having a steam machine for ease of couch gaming and freedom to play whatever they like. A lot of normie consumers are actually interested in PC indies, and not having to deal with windows is a game changer for them. Plus, Valve has already learned from their mistakes during the first launch and have already proven themselves with the Deck.

Not to mention, Xbox is currently falling apart so Steam is in a favorable position to overtake them.

Reality check: Discord, known for obliterating skype and teamspeak, is made by transexual furries. For some reason a dev team of transexual furries is the concrete foundation for a microsoft product killer.

After having tried it for a month it’s about as close as you can get to an off-the-shelf console OS until valve officially releases SteamOS.
Regardless of who made it, until a better option arrives I will recommend it for the unwashed masses that just want a gaming system that they dont have to fuck with.

Agreed. The first steam machine failed but it’s a different situation this time. It can actually run most games now. My pipe dream is that it performs comparably to the next xbox so games like Battlefield actually have to start supporting linux or risk losing a noticeable audience slice, basically volunteering to be exclusive with none of the benefits.
I heard all the technical reasons why they can’t or won’t and i literally don’t care. These companies have more money and manpower than a human can comprehend. They can figure it out.
